25.01.2022 Well here’s me feeling very excited about bringing wine & kimchi (foods processed by bacteria) to a webinar on understanding amine producing organisms (did you guess it? The very same bacteria )... But really - got food sensitivities? Some folks are sensitive to little chemicals that bacteria produce, and there are some interesting correlations between certain gut bacteria, their overgrowth, and patients presenting with allergies. Call me if you want to learn more. ... Have a delicious week! See more

25.01.2022 Herb prep bringing me joy today

24.01.2022 This popped up on my feed today - flash back to China, 2006. This was my local pharmacy in Jinan, across the road from Shandong Hospital where I completed my internship. Herbs and pharmaceutical prescriptions were under the same roof. I observed hundreds of outpatient cases per day, and loved seeing the integration of modern science & traditional wisdom offered in the hospital. Some people were prescribed herbs, others a course of chemo, some referred to the acupuncture o...r physical theraoy departments (Tui Na), others to surgery. Personally I only saw benefits when patients were offered integrative and collaborative health care. In 2015, I completed a year of intensive study in Functional Medicine with Chris Kresser, which offered me a deep dive into modern research on gut health, the HPA axis and the way we respond to chronic stress, blood chemistry and lifestyle modification for a range of modern diseases. From my perspective, there is no competition between treatment methods, no judgement on your choices, no ideological conflict between outdated concepts of ‘west’ and ‘east’. I have my preferences, sure. These are based on my experience, my observations, my training; and they continue to evolve. What works for one person may not work for another. Some methods work faster or slower, are cheaper or more expensive, have little side effects or dangerous ones. There is rarely ‘one’ way to any goal, just countless professional opinions, plus the patient’s needs and preferences. There are many ‘right’ ways, many roads that lead to Rome. Health professionals should offer you their favorite paths, the gifts of their navigation experience. This photo represents the culmination point of my undergraduate study, and the seeding point for my current approach. It’s been a juicy time to reflect on. Wishing you all a sweet and restful week. 19.01.2022 A magnificent magnolia (Flos Magnoliae or Xin Yi Hua) gratefully gathered on my walk yesterday. For me, this time of year in Melbourne is ruled by the magnolia: flamboyant flowers line the local streets. It will be closely followed by its springtime friend, jasmine, another friendly herb, as the earth shifts on its axis and we turn towards the light. In Chinese Medicine, we use two different parts of the magnolia for their different properties, the flower bud and the ...tree bark (Cortex Magnoliae or Hou Po). ‘A wide range of pharmacological actions of Flos Magnoliae (the flower bud) have been reported, including anti-allergy, anti-inflammation, and anti-microbial activity’ (Shen, Zhou, Pang, Story, Xue). In plain terms, we might give it to patients with a stuffy nose. Quite convenient to have such an abundance of this herb pop up just before hayfever season! Mother Nature coming through yet again with profound beauty, utility, and an impeccable sense of timing. I’m at my gorgeous clinic in Collingwood! Call me anytime 03 9417 1964 See more

18.01.2022 This poem by Mary Oliver found me today by surprise. It’s right on theme as I’ve been contemplating the alchemical combo of grit and drive lately, that hunger that propels us to experience something greater than our comfort zone. That thing that allows us to make a different choice than all the ones we’ve made before, or simply, the strength within that allows us to carry on - even when we ache from adversity or failure. These thoughts were further stirred from watching ...a tv show on adventure racers (yup I did ). I listened them describe their motivation to endure all kinds of suffering (hypothermia, infection and trench foot among others). Often, to explore what can be overcome, to stare down adversity, to prove their self perception wrong as to what is possible, and what they are capable of. Perhaps, to prove ones unbreakable spirit. Each one of our bodies, lions of courage, storehouses of grit. Miraculously breathing, thinking, experiencing. From what I’ve heard in clinic it’s been a stormy week for some. Wishing each of you a little space for wonder and amazement amidst the waves. See more

16.01.2022 Wishing you all love as we traverse the first week of Stage 4 lockdown in Melbourne. As you know, COVID-19 infections continue to rise, and thankfully these restrictions prioritise the health and safety of each member of our gorgeous Melbourne family. As an allied health provider governed by the AHPRA, I’m not required to close. Travel restrictions do not apply if attending healthcare appointments. However, since the majority of you are able to receive a consistency of ca...re through telehealth consultation (with medicines via post), for the most part I’ll be working alone in my lovely clinic in Collingwood. Face to face appointments may be offered to the few of you who, without this support, would experience substantial deterioration in your condition or be escalated elsewhere. We’ve got to keep the burden off our hospitals, and we’ve also got to make sure you get the help you need. Please call the new clinic number 0394171964 if you need advice or support. I’m here for you. Let’s be here for each other. We’ve got this, Melbourne. See more

11.01.2022 Good morning! Reading in bed in the Spring sun truly is the height of luxury! Currently devouring Edith Eger’s new book The Gift: 12 Lessons to Save Your Life. Dr Eger is a Holocaust survivor and clinical psychologist of more than 40 years, currently in her 90’s. It is a joy and privilege to read the gold she has uncovered in her clinical practice and life experience. I crashed my eReader because I basically tried to highlight the whole damn book. Recommend

04.01.2022 Is there anything more luxurious than reading in the glorious winter sun? Doubtful. I’m developing some recreational day-off habits to support my work life balance. Sometimes it’s hard to just ‘switch off’ at will, so having activities & practices that signal happy downtime can be really helpful in coaxing our mind into different states. Healthy minds experience a variety of states, allowing us to process events, commit things to memory, creatively problem solve, get ...strategic, have new ideas, or enjoy our good mood (among many others). The mind also responds very well to repetition. Repetition makes habits, even brain-chemical ones. That’s right! We can train our brain to experience more pleasure, relaxation, or less enjoyable states too. So while the irony is not lost on me that I’m writing an insta post on my day off while preaching downtime (), I’m still creating great habits. Many of us are worried in the face of illness and uncertainty (I hear you, me too!) so now is a great time to go seek out some regular practices that, drop by drop, grows a landscape of good health and joy in our lives. P.s. I’m re-reading one of my all time favorite books, The Body Is Not An Apology by Sonya Renee Taylor; and Phosphorescence by the excellent Julia Baird. See more

01.01.2022 What kind of magic is a spring stroll at sunset? Daffodils and the lifting of restrictions are a great recipe to lift the spirits too! Did you know the press conference today revealed that restrictions on allied health and elective surgery will ease at the end of September? That means I’ll get to see more if your gorgeous faces in under two weeks. I. CAN. NOT. WAIT. Until then dear ones!
