09.01.2022 Students Beam as Professional Engineers Bear a Heavy Load Local home educated students caused a reaction at the Aurecon Bridge Building Challenge on Wednesday 18th of September. Josh (12), Yossi (12) and Jordan (13) beat 41 secondary school teams to win the efficiency award. Their bridge, built of balsa wood, held 57.5kg. The majority of bridge models tested held 15-35kg before failing. Bridges from Mount St Josephs and Mount Scopus held more weight and also won awards, howe...ver, due to its efficient design, the home educated teams bridge had the best strength to weight ratio. I was so busy watching to see how the stress points of the bridge were holding up that I didnt even hear the final weight called and I didnt know we had won until much later." says Josh. The big surprise came when professional engineering teams from Aurecon, VicRoads and West Gate Tunnel Project l put their own model bridges to the test whilst judges were deliberating over the student designs. Vic Roads had been undefeated for the entire 18 years since the commencement of the bridge-building challenge. The boys bridge held more weight than teams from all three professional engineering companies. Although Josh is only 12 years old, he has been competing in secondary school challenges for many years. As a grade one student, Josh achieved a credit result in the Australian Science Innovations Big Science Challenge for year seven students. Yossi, a year seven student, won several engineering awards this year at an engineering program for year eight students at Monash University in Clayton. Jordan also contributed his skills to the bridge-building project by doing the mathematical calculations. Perhaps the boys will be receiving job offers very soon.
