25.01.2022 Ive decided Id like to catalogue everything I make. From now on every peice of furniture will be getting a serial number punched into the bottom that once decoded will lead to my buried treasure. #makersmark
25.01.2022 The Gav build: 18 panels of Victorian Ash ready to be laminated (glued) to form six horizontal shelves measuring 1000 x 360mm. #recordshelves #vinyl #mtgravatthipster
24.01.2022 First coat of shellac. #bedhair
23.01.2022 I had half of my Chippendale end table topple over whilst doing a dry fit on the floor the other day. The result was a few very minor dings where the timber fibres had compressed. I thought it would be a good opportunity to find out how easy it is to repair a timber dent using a bit of water and heat. Literally took about 60 seconds.
23.01.2022 The Chippendale table came to a finish today (pics to come) so Ive now gone back to concentrating on getting the shelves for a friends vinyl collection finished. The shelves are slightly too deep to cut with the mitre saw so I got this Festool plunge saw and rail to assist in getting accurate cuts. Being German made it wasnt cheap but its totally awesome. #festool
22.01.2022 With the completion of the Gav Build, its time to pack up the workshop ready for the house raising project. Tomorrow the steel beams start getting bolted onto the existing timber bearers ready to be lifted 3.5m into the air next week. This means that what currently exists as downstairs, workshop included, will be getting demolished. If this rain finally stops then hopefully the new slab will be down in four weeks time and then I can start framing up the new ground floor which will include all the living spaces and a new and much improved workshop. #ownerbuilder #noidea
22.01.2022 If we were an episode of Grand Designs, the cameras would have been here today for the window and door delivery. These are the workshop doors.
21.01.2022 The Gav build. Dry assembly minus top which was accidentally cut into three pieces. #vinylcollection #festool #heavy #dominos
21.01.2022 A spare 30 mins to domino some boards together. #dontwakethebaby #festool
19.01.2022 First attempt at hand cut dovetails. So. Slow.
18.01.2022 Im currently making some shelves for a client who wanted their furniture finished with a product that had no or minimal VOCs. I decided to use a German oil called Livos Ardvos Universal Wood Oil #266 (bit of a mouthful) which is totally non toxic and made using flax seed. Its surprisingly nice to work with and has a nice nutty smell. Makes a pleasant change from the hallucinogenic fumes of polyurethane. Heres a test peice of Victorian Ash. No finish on the left and the same peice with one coat of Livos on the right.
16.01.2022 Nice little article (quite long actually)on the rise in demand for hand crafted items and the increasing rejection of mass produced consumables.
16.01.2022 The second smallest window in the build arrived and it's probably my favourite. It's for the guest ensuite and had to be frosted or similar so we rolled the dice with some "Jap Daisy" glass. Apart from sounding a little racist, it's lovely stuff to both look at and run the fingers over.

15.01.2022 The Gav build. Middle column of shelves being dry fit.
14.01.2022 I had my good friend and photographer Ray Williams come around for a product shoot on Monday. Needless to say he did a top notch job. Pictured here is the finished clothes rack with shelves.
14.01.2022 Last of the internal framing going up before the engineer's inspection next week. Guest ensuite and hallway. #worlds_slowest_build
13.01.2022 Not much has been happening while the workshop/house is being built so here's a chess board that was completed a little while back. Tasmanian Blackwood and Nth QLD Silky Oak.
12.01.2022 The Gav Build. Final coat of wax applied and off to their final resting place.
12.01.2022 Chess board progress. My favourite bit.
12.01.2022 For anyone wondering what the dickens the Chippendale project Im currently working on actually is, its this. Or similar to this anyway. This is the coffee table version I sketched up last year. Im currently making something exactly the same except that instead of a coffee table weve opted for a sofa end table to meet our current needs. Ive also left the brackets out as I dont have a scroll saw for the intricate cuts required. Thats how Im justifying my laziness anyway.

11.01.2022 Anyone know how to build a house?
10.01.2022 What should hopefully be the last coat of shellac being applied.

10.01.2022 18 shelves. #thegavbuild #vinylcollection #festool #vicash
09.01.2022 Quick weekend visit to Berlin to see Stinson and Ronja. Floorboards in their apartment were 300mm wide.
08.01.2022 Turns out I didnt delete it.
06.01.2022 Lightly sanding the four coats of shellac with 800 grit paper before wiping on the fifth coat. Water is sprayed first to avoid heat building up while sanding which makes the shellac gum up on the paper. #videocutout
06.01.2022 Spent the morning making the remaining doors and drawer for the workshop cabinets. Sanding and painting next. #festool
05.01.2022 The only real decent figuring I got out of this batch. Damn you figure hogging veneer companies. #maplerose
05.01.2022 The old iron wasnt going to fix this one but a bit of wood glue with the help of some tooth picks (to get glue into the crack) did the job. 60 mins under clamps and then a quick sand and its pretty much unnoticeable.
04.01.2022 Bead moulding going on around the base of the aprons. Taking a lot longer to do than I thought.
02.01.2022 Ive started applying the finish to my table. I have a love/hate relationship with finishing. I love seeing what the grain actually looks like after weeks of working on it in its raw state, but I hate the fact that I often stuff it up. My last few projects have been oil finishes and I feel like I was really starting to get a good result so I decided this time to take the leap into the world of shellac - one of the more traditional finishes but a fair bit harder to get righ...t. This is the top after 2 coats.
01.01.2022 Picked up some Qld Maple today for a Chippendale style end table. It will be my first attempt at a Chippendale style design and Im going to omit the decorative brackets this time. Heres the timber all dressed and experimenting with the table top panels for best orientation.
01.01.2022 So I just accidentally deleted the video I made of the bead moulding being shaped on the router table. I present to you the less interesting bead moulding being cut to width on the table saw.
