25.01.2022 If you're looking for a fun Christmas gift for a little someone who may be starting school or kinda next year, and who will need a lunch box, how cool is this, literally! This 2 compartment cooling lunch box is available from the fantastic Market 3196 at Wells Road in Chelsea Heights. The management at Market 3196 have been so generous with Chelsea SES, giving us space to provide information as well as selling our lunch boxes to help with fundraising. The market do not take a...ny money for this service and are just happy to support what we do, which is just brilliant. So, if you would like to grab a great Christmas gift, and support Chelsea SES, as every cent goes directly to us, either message us, or drop in to Market 3196 which has over 300 stalls and has the perfect gifts for the entire family! They are open 7 days a week, between 10am and 5pm. See more
25.01.2022 This was how the front changed as it crossed the Bay and why it hasn't affected us this time.
25.01.2022 On 29 September each year, we pause to remember the Victoria Police employees who have passed away over the past 12 months. This is a time for members of Victoria Police and the community to honour the dedicated men and women who have died serving their community. In Victoria, the Blue Ribbon Foundation also holds Blue Ribbon Day on 29 September to coincide with National Police Remembrance Day. Chelsea SES are proud to work with Victoria Police in many ways and always stand ready to assist whenever called on.
24.01.2022 Just in case you hadn't noticed, it's WINDY AGAIN!!! Sadly, this is just a part of Spring time in Melbourne. However, the winds are going to increase overnight to an even windier and warmer day tomorrow. For all of us Hay fever sufferers; it's going to be along day I think. Here is what BOM has to say: DAMAGING WINDS, averaging 50 to 60 km/h with peak gusts of around 100 km/h are LIKELY across eastern and central elevated areas (above 900 metres) from this evening, extending... to all parts of the warning area above 400 metres during Saturday morning with peak gusts increasing to 110 km/h. DAMAGING WINDS, averaging 40 to 60 km/h with peak gusts of 100 km/h are POSSIBLE across remaining lower parts of the warning area from Saturday morning. Strong and gusty winds continue during Saturday but the risk of damaging wind gusts is likely to become confined to eastern highlands (above 600 metres) by late Saturday. Locations which may be affected include Seymour, Ballarat, Geelong, Melbourne, Wonthaggi and Bacchus Marsh. As always, check that loose items such as outdoor settings, umbrellas and trampolines, are safely secured around your property and move vehicles under cover or away from trees. If you do find yourself in need of emergency assistance from the SES, just call 132 500 and we will be there as quicklt as we can. Stay safe and stay well.
23.01.2022 We were promised some messy weather today and it looks like we may be getting some quite soon. There is a front moving across the Bay and heading our way. We also know from history, how unstable these fronts are and how they can strengthen or dissipate as they cross the Bay so this is just a gentle warning. This front has the potential for rain and some wind gusts, so it's time to bring the washing in, secure any loose items around your property and move the car if it happens to be parked under a tree. If you do find yourself in need of emergency SES assistance, just call 132 500 and we'll be with you as soon as we can. Take care and stay safe.
22.01.2022 Here is the story relating to the Police incident that Chelsea SES assisted with today. Thanks to VICPOL News for the story. https://www.police.vic.gov.au/cannabis-crop-crime-syndicate
21.01.2022 For those of you in tyhe Chelsea area, you may have noticed that the wind is starting to pick up just a little, but it seems there is more to come later today and into Monday morning. BOM have just released a Severe Weather Warning for potential damaging winds. DAMAGING WINDS, averaging 50 to 70 km/h with peak gusts of around 100 to 110 km/h are expected across elevated areas (above 400m) of western Victoria, extending to elevated areas of central Victoria during the morning... then extending to the far east during the evening. DAMAGING WINDS, averaging 45 to 55 km/h with peak wind gusts around 90 km/h are possible through remaining parts of the warning area from later this morning. Winds are expected to continue overnight Sunday into Monday, but will ease from the west behind a change which is expected to reach western Victoria late tonight, central districts early Monday then clearing the east during Monday afternoon. Locations which may be affected include Ballarat, Geelong, Melbourne, Frankston, Bacchus Marsh and Falls Creek. As always, we would ask you to check that loose items such as outdoor settings, umbrellas and trampolines are safely secured and move vehicles under cover or away from trees. If you are outdoors, move to a safe place indoors. Stay away from trees, drains, gutters, creeks and waterways. If driving conditions are dangerous, safely pull over away from trees, drains, low-lying areas and floodwater. Avoid travel if possible. Stay safe by avoiding dangerous hazards, such as floodwater, mud, debris, damaged roads and fallen trees. Stay away from fallen powerlines always assume they are live. See more
20.01.2022 Over the past few hours, a number of thunderstorm fronts have been moving across the Bay from the North West. Luckily, each one has dissipated as it crossed the water and had no affect on our area, however, these fronts appears to be larger and moving reasonably quickly. So as they say, better to be safe than sorry. Might be a good time to bring in any washing from the line and to make sure that there are no loose objects lying around your property. The front is still changing shape and direction and it may end up being just some light rain, and if it continues at it's current speed, it should be with us within the next half an hour, so this is a just in case message. Stay safe and take care.
20.01.2022 Just in case you thought nothing in 2020 had remained the same, here is your first reminder that some things haven't changed. Daylight saving starts in Victoria at 2am next Sunday morning, the 4th of October. So, before you go to bed next Saturday night, remember to put your clocks FORWARD by 1 hour. It is also a timely reminder of the message from our mates at the CFA, to change the batteries in your smoke alarms as well. So there it is for another year, next Saturday night, before you go to bed, change the batteries in your smoke alarm and move your clocks forward by 1 hour. Change your clocks, change your smoke alarm batteries!
19.01.2022 A little wet out there! Please drive to the conditions as the roads are just a little slippery tonight. Stay safe.
17.01.2022 Is seems our Spoonville members are in the news once again, this time at the online social news agency, Probonoaustralia.com.au Thank so much for your support guys. Check out the story here. https://probonoaustralia.com.au//ses-newest-recruits-come/
17.01.2022 Just before 9am this morning, Chelsea SES Red Team were called to Cunningham Close in Aspendale Gardens, to a tree that had split in a number of places and was moving dangerously in the wind. On arrival, members assessed that the 6 Mtr Tea Tree needed to come down, as the wind was increasing in strength and there was a fear that it could come down onto the house. The tree was taken down to a point where it was deemed safe and Red Team headed back to the Chelsea HQ just before 11am.
17.01.2022 These toys are great in a pool, but please use some common sense, and please don't have your kids, or yourselves, in them or on them, out on the Bay, in the current conditions. The wind is strong and swirling around, and local SES Units have recieved 5 calls for to rescue people in inflatables who have capsized, or are being taken out to sea over the past 4 hours. Please; think about the conditions before making your decisions. We have been lucky today, in that we have had no tragic results, but please, save the toys for the pool, it just might save you!
16.01.2022 Hope you are all doing OK with this windy weather, We hear that it should begin to ease later this afternoon, but as always, if you do find yourself in need of emergency SES assistance, simply call 132 500. Also, last reminder, don't forget, before you go to bed tonight, put your clocks FORWARD on hour as we begin daylight saving time tomorrow. Stay safe everyone.
16.01.2022 Just a heads up folks from your friendly Chelsea SES. There is a significant front heading accross the Bay from the Geelong region and heading in our direction. As we always say, this cpould change dramatically whilst crossing the Bay, however, it is wise to be prepared. This afternoon, the Yarrawonga area, was hit by sever thunderstorms that resulted in some damage to property. Please ensure that all loose items around your property are secured and if possible, don't park yo...ur car near, or under trees. With this front, we may see high winds and after some recent issues, we would strongly reccommend that noone be using inflatable pool toys as floatation devises in the water as this front approaches. Stay safe, and as always, if you find yourself in need of emergency SES assistance, call us on 132 500. Take care and stay safe and drive to the conditions. See more
16.01.2022 Big thank you to the Pakenham Gazette for this great coverage from last Saturday's Chaps and Chainsaws Back To Bunyip 2021.
16.01.2022 Just after 1.30am this morning, Chelsea SES crews were called to Royal Parade in Mordialloc, where a vehicle had crashed into a unit block. The vehicle had been travelling along Randall Street before crashing into the building. Police, Firies and Ambulance Victoria attended the scene, but luckily, there were no injuries. City of Kingston building inspectors will visit the block today to assess the damage.
15.01.2022 Good morning all, a little damp this morning, but look what that gave us. This beautiful rainbow over the Bay and it looks like this will clear and give us a pretty nice day with a top of 23 and some sun on it's way. Stay safe, and have a great Thursday.
15.01.2022 Today is Remembrance Day. At eleven o'clock, on the morning of the eleventh hour, of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, in 1918, guns fell silent across the world, as what was to be called, the war to end all wars, finally ceased. The conflict that had witnessed the Battle of the Somme, the landings at Gallipoli, the use of poison gas for the first time, and the death of an estimated 20 Million people around the World was over. History would go on to show that 60,000 Aus...tralians were killed, and more than 156,000 were wounded. Sadly, it did not become the war that ended all wars, and since the conclusion of hostilities in 1918, war has continued to ravage far too many countries, and kill and maim for too many people, and tragically, it continues, in one location or another, somewhere in the world today. People in many countries have said that recent lockdowns were too much of an imposition on our lives, perhaps today is a perfect opportunity to reflect the true understanding of hardship, loss and deprivation of freedom, but also, the day to remember and respect those brave men and women, who made the ultimate sacrifice, to allow us those very freedoms that we cherish today. Not simply those of the past months, but those of the past 102 years. Lest We Forget. See more
15.01.2022 WOW!!! On behalf of every member of the Chelsea SES Team, we want to say a Million thank you’s. We are so excited to share with you, that our little Facebook page, has this morning, notched up one Million hits since January 1st and it is all thanks to the amazing support that our wonderful community has shown us through this page. Our members read every comment, enjoy every like and every share. Their spirits are lifted and the warmth and compassion that your words convey can...not be overstated. We have always tried to keep the page positive, and with the demise of many local papers, we made the decision to expand our content, to include stories that we believe are important to our community and should be shared, and these numbers seem to show that you have welcomed these changes. One Million hits, One Million people reached in a calendar year is an amazing milestone, and one that we are all very proud of, so thank you once again for your incredible support and we look forward to doing what we can to entertain you, educate you, give you warnings and tips to try to keep you all safe, and more than anything, to try to keep you informed as to what is happening in your neighbourhood for many years to come. 15.01.2022 Hail, thunder, heavy rain and sunshine, and all within 30 minutes; just another Summer's day in Melbourne. Thanks to my wife Maryann, for this great picture of the culprit as it made it's was ashore. We may well see more of these localized storm fronts as they are passing through Melbourne over the next 24 hours. Stay safe and take extra care on the roads by driving to the conditions.
14.01.2022 Looks like the rain that came in overnight is going to be hanging around for a while yet, so if you need to out and about driving, please drive to the conditions as there is a lot of surface water sitting on the roads.
13.01.2022 Following predictions from the weather bureau, regarding the likelihood of the next 3 months being much wetter than average, due to the effects of a La Nina event, select face to face training, under strict COVID Safe conditions, resumed at Chelsea SES tonight for the first time since March. The limited resumption of this face to face training, will be confined to operations directly related to flood and storm events. Tonight, 2 groups trained at 2 separate locations, in sett...ing up and connecting pumps and sandbagging and procedures for our new automatic sandbagging trailer. The idea behind this, is to ensure that Chelsea SES volunteer members, are ready for anything Mother Nature may throw at us over the coming months. As we all know, the weather is notoriously fickle, especially in Spring, and in Melbourne, we truly can experience 4 seasons in one day, and some days it feels like even more! We often see rain bands being narrow and localized, however, these predictions are telling us that we could see large areas of Melbourne affected, and a real chance of suburban flash flooding occurring. As always, we will do whatever we can to give you warnings, with as much notice as possible, of any major rain or storm events that could potentially impact our area, and also tips to help you to minimize the risks to you and your property. As we have said so often, like us, you should prepare for the worst and hope for the best. See more
13.01.2022 It's been a busy morning for Green Team with multiple flood related jobs across our patch. The Frankston bound lanes of Boundary Road at Dingley was turned into a river and we saw once again, why we constantly try to get the message through to people, not to drive into flood water under any circumstances. 2 vehicles went in, and didn't come out. I spoke to one of the drivers who told me that he thought he would get through with no problems, but then as he drove through, the b...ow wave he created, raised the water level which then came up and over his bonnet and he came to a stop. Luckily, both of these drivers got away with nothing more than an embarrassing story to tell the mechanics and panel beaters. Chute Street in Mordialloc was also under water, but once again, drivers chose to simply ignore the warnings and drive through. Sports grounds at the back of Mordialloc were turned into lakes and the drains were close to overflowing. Patterson River resembled white water rapids and had broken it's banks in a couple of places. On the positive side, it looks like the bulk of the heavy rain has now moved on and the rest of the day should be much dryer. Please take care as there are many roads in the area covered in water and we would hate for you to join the ranks of drivers who thought they would be fine, only to find they were not! Stay safe and take care and drive to the conditions. See more
12.01.2022 Huge thank you to Wes Hosking from the Herald Sun for the great story in today's paper. Chelsea controller, Ron Fitch is featured in this great picture, taken on the day by Chelsea member Tash!
12.01.2022 WARNING: Please be aware that Chelsea SES are on their way to the corner of Thames Promenade and Station Street in Chelsea, where a length of roof flashing has come loose and is hanging dangerously above the footpath. Police are on scene and blocking the footpath. Be aware that if you are entering Thames Prom from Station Street, some lanes may be blocked by emergency service vehicles so please take extra care. Stay safe.

10.01.2022 Just after 11 am this morning, Green Team were out and about once again. This time, assisting Police at a crime scene in Braeside, where marquees and lighting were required. Marquees were up and secured in quick time and lighting in place. Great job by Green Team ands VICPOL were very happy with the SES service!
10.01.2022 It was an early start for Blue Team this morning, with a call for asstance for a flood coming in just after 5.15 am. A plumbing mishap in the kitchen area of the Bayside Hostel aged care facility in McDonald Street in Moordialloc had the staff reaching for towels and mops and calling for Chelsea SES to help. South East Water attended and isolated the water, and staff had done a great job containing the flood to a reasonably small area. Members Jarrod and Tammy made short work of finishing the clean up with the wet vac and were back at the unit in pleanty of time for breakfast. Due to the great work of staff, and all who attended, the redidents were not inconvinienced and in fact, most were unaware of the early morning mishap.

07.01.2022 It's been a perfect day in Melbourne today, but earlier in the week, high, damaging winds played havoc around town, and Chelsea SES members were out and about, doing what they do best. One of the worst affected areas was Nillumbik, and Chelsea headed to Eltham to assist. Meanwhile, closer to home, a huge branch came dpown onto powewr lines in Parkdale and again, Chelsea were on hand to ensure the area was kept safe while the power company did their thing and then cleared the offending branch.
07.01.2022 In case you missed it, here is the Chaps and Chainsaws story from 7 News on Saturday night. A huge thank you to the & News crew who did a sensational job for us! https://www.facebook.com/7NEWSMelbourne/videos/1108551136232852/
06.01.2022 Just after 12.30am this morning, Chelsea SES were called to rescue a person who had been pinned under a fallen branch in Main Street Mordialloc. Not only Chelsea SES members, but also, Ambulance Victoria, Fire Services Victoria and VICPOL were called to what appeared to be a serious incident, however, on arrival and after a search of the area, no branch and no injured person were located and whilst we are happy that noone was injured, it is still frustrating to be called out ...to false alarmes like this. Then, while on scene, a call came through for a tree that had come down and was blocking the roadway on Bowen Parkway in Waterways. The same crew attended and soon had the road clear and open. This morning the calls continued with a small branch on the road at the corner of Nepean Highway and White Street in Mordialloc and then a fence that had come down in Aspendale and a tree down on Gladesville Blvd in Patterson Lakes. Stay safe today and if you need SES emergency assistance, simply call 132 500 and we will get to as soon as we can. See more
05.01.2022 Well there you have it, as we have been telling you for a week or so now, the Bureau of Meteorology has officially declared that La Niña is underway in the tropical Pacific. During a La Niña phase, Australia's northern waters are warm with increased convection. This allows more moisture to be lifted into the air than normal, typically resulting in increased rain for eastern and northern Australia. That moisture can lead to cooler daytime temperatures and higher than average r...ainfall. We tend to see more cloud and more moisture around to keep the air a bit cooler, but also, at night, when you've got a lot of cloud cover, it acts like a lid, trapping in the heat, so we may be in for some uncomfortable nights with above average overnight minimum temperatures. This pattern can also lead to higher numbers of more severe cyclones affecting the tropical North. This pattern of above average rainfall, may have an upside, of a slight lowering to the risk of bushfires, but as with any weather pattern, they are fickle and can change. Keep following our page for tips and warnings for potential flood and storm activity over the coming months. See more
05.01.2022 Not one of the 5,000+ SES volunteers throughout Victoria, delivers for their community, every day of the year, without an incredible support network of family and friends, that allows us to do what we do. Your family, our family, is an initiative of VICSES, over the weekend of the 14th and 15th of November, to celebrate those who support our volunteers. There are so many stories of our members missing significant days in the family’s life because their community called for he...lp, and they answered that call. The countless times the pager sounds just as dinner is being served and knowing it will need to be reheated later. Long hours at jobs in the middle of the night, knowing that they still need to be up early in the morning for work. Birthdays, special events, Easter or Christmas, all having to be put on hold or postponed, as the SES pager shows no favouritism when it comes to the call for help. Having someone there to pick kids up from school, take kids to sports or just being there with a hug and a cuppa after a long, tough callout. We simply couldn’t do what we do without these amazing people who allow us to be there to respond to calls for help, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, and for this, we send them all the biggest thank you. 05.01.2022 With the expected strong winds for tomorrow, it is timely to stop and ask ourselves if there is anything we can do to try to keep safe during these windy conditions. Back on the 27th of August, the damaging winds that swept through Melbourne caused so much damage to property, with many homes and businesses being without power for long periods of time, however, far more importantly, tragically, 3 people lost their lives, just by being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Tomo...rrows strong Northerly winds, will again bring a high risk of falling trees to a large part of Victoria. If you are outdoors and there are strong winds, avoid walking or sitting underneath trees. Monitor conditions and try to time your exercise, or your visit to the park, outside of the strongest winds. The safest place to be during a storm is indoors. Avoid unnecessary travel, and unless you have no other choice, don’t be on the road if you don’t have to be, particularly in tree lined areas. If you must be on the roads please drive to the conditions and try to stay aware of your surroundings. Be aware and be safe! See more
05.01.2022 As we move into Spring, we are being warned by the weather experts of a possible La Nina, which could lead us to above average, wetter and windier conditions over the coming months. Chelsea SES will make sure that we keep you all updated with these conditions and obviously, try to give as much notice as we can, to warnings for severe weather, potential for flooding, and damaging winds. During this time, we will be preparing just in case. So we thought it was also a good time ...to deliver a warning. If you are in a flood prone area and decide that you will be prepared at your own property by purchasing some sandbags and sand, please ensure that your load of sand is safe for transporting by covering it with a tarp, not like this guy who thought that this could be considered tying down his load? Don't forget, if you do decide to make preparations, even though hardware stores are closed, they still can deliver, or many have a click and collect service. See more
04.01.2022 Just after 5 pm tonight, Chelsea SES were called to a tree that was down on power lines and blocking the footpath in Embankment Grove, Chelsea. When we arrived at the address, it was very clear why the tree had snapped, the tree had been dead for some time. As we have said so many times, healthy trees will sometimes come down in high winds, but dead trees will almost certainly come down in windy conditions. The real estate company is aware of the situation and hopefully, it will be fixed very soon. Luckily, there was nobody was walking past at the time, as that could have been a far different story.
03.01.2022 Green Team have been out and about again this morning, with 2 tree jobs, one in Edithvale and one in Aspendale Gardens. Both involved trees that had come down on fences, and coming to rest on their neighbours property. One tree was in good health, however, like last night, the other tree was long deceased. With this Springs weather tipped to be wetter and windier than average, it should be a timely warning to everyone that if you have a dead tree on your property, now is the time to have it removed. It is too late when the tree comes down onto your house or car, or more tragically, hits a passer by friend or family member. None of us want to see that happen, so take action now to avoid tragedy later.
03.01.2022 Today, a few more of our Spoonville Volunteers headed out to their respective areas, to take up their role in keeping more Spoonville residents safe and sound. We have received requests to have SES volunteers at the Carrum Girl Guides in Walkers Road Carrum, and at the Chelsea World of Learning in Woodbine Grove Chelsea, and also, we were asked to station one of our volunteers in Waterways. I’m pleased to say, that these 3 Spoonville locations, now have a proud SES Spoonville Volunteer, on duty, 24 hours a day, to keep them safe. If you have a Spoonville that is located between Carrum and Parkdale, and would like to have an SES Spoonville volunteer in place, let us know and we will see what we can do, no guarantees, but we will definitely try. Stay safe and take care.
03.01.2022 We have been contacted buy a number of people this morning who have received text messages regarding COVID-19 cases locally, in fact I received one as well. I can confirm that this SMS has been sent by the government, following a testing station being set up in Bonbeach yesterday and we would urge people to follow the advice. Please share this post, as it seems a number of people are concerned as to the authenticity of the message. 02.01.2022 Here’s a little throwback Thursday for any history lovers out there. As Chelsea SES Volunteers, we often get called upon to clear trees that have come down onto homes, cars and roads, in storms or other major weather events. Some are small, some are large, and some are just huge. Today, with all of the training, specialized and safety precautions we have at our disposal, the jobs can usually be managed well, but things weren’t always like that. Imagine being an SES volunteer around 1890, yes, I know there was no SES in 1890, but let’s not let the truth get in the way of a good story. Check out some of the things the old school lumberjacks got up to back then, any wonder that the average lifespan of a tree feller back in those days was 35 years. Check out these amazing pictures from a time long gone, thank goodness!
02.01.2022 The rain has had our pagers working overtime since last night and it looks set to continue for at least the next few hours. Just after 8 pm last night, Chelsea members were called in to respond with our pump trailer, to assist Monash Unit at a flood in Regent Street, Mount Waverley. Once set up, the pumps soon had the road clear and the threat to flooding of homes on the street was averted. Then, just before 3.30 am this morning, as if the rain wasn’t enough, we were called t...o Como Parade East in Parkdale to a flood caused by a burst water main. Then it began again just before am this morning and crews are currently attending multiple calls for assistance for flooding issues in Chelsea, Mentone, Mordialloc and a number of addresses in Parkdale. The heaviest rains should start to clear our area over the next couple of hours, but it may be a busy morning for us. Please be aware that there may be a build up of water over roads, so please drive to the conditions, and of course, never drive into flood waters. Already this morning, a car was stuck in flood waters in Mills Road in Braeside, so take care and stay safe. Big thank you to Chelsea member Jarrod and Monash Unit for the great pictures. See more
