21.01.2022 The team at Cherished Minds would like to wish all of our clients and their families a very merry Christmas! We hope you have a wonderful holiday and that you are able to rest and recharge to meet 2020 head on!
21.01.2022 As a health service, it is important that Cherished Minds continues to run with minimal impact to services so that we can continue to provide support and guidance to our Cherished Families. As many of you would have seen, we have recently sent out some information about how both Cherished Families and staff can contribute to reducing the spread of the Coronavirus such as engaging in proper hygiene practices and not attending the clinic if you are unwell. Additionally, Cheri...shed Minds will be providing the option of conducting consultations either by Skype or phone for those who may be unable to attend the clinic. Some things to consider: - If you are NDIS funded, you are able to access Skype or phone consultations under the same claiming structure as if you are attending face to face consultations - If you are using a mental health care plan, you will be able to request Skype or Phone consultations but be unable to claim a rebate. This will also mean that it will not be counted towards your 10 claimable sessions per calendar year and you can resume using these sessions when you attend face to face sessions at the clinic in the future - Please consider if Skype or Phone consultations are suitable for your child. Under NDIS you may choose to use these consultations as a parent training session to ensure that you can continue to receive support from your Psychologist during the time you are not attending the clinic. Under Medicare your child is required to be present during the consultation If you feel that a Skype or Phone session is required in place of your usual face to face consultation please contact administration on 9822-8630 with ample notice for this to be organised Cherished Minds will continue to do its best to support Cherished families during this time of uncertainty. We encourage everyone to remain calm, composed and support each other. Yours Sincerely, Cherished Minds Team

19.01.2022 If you have a child with a developmental disability, then some everyday activities such as going to the hairdresser or the dentist can be a real challenge! Dr Avanti Karve is a dentist with a specialisation in special needs dentistry, meaning she has specialised knowledge and experience working with people who have intellectual disabilities, mental health concerns and dental anxiety. Dr Karve works out of Westmead Hospital and Sydney Adventist Hospital in Wahroonga. See the Westmead Hospital website for more information: https://www.wslhd.health.nsw.gov.au//Special-Care-Dentistry
17.01.2022 In such a time of uncertainty, it is important that we support and guide our children and those around us to remain calm and composed. Particularly for children with anxiety, the current world health crisis can be a very confusing and scary time. It is important that we talk to our children and help them to make sense of the changes around them in a calm and reassuring way. The below resources provide some wonderful pointers on how we can do this effectively as the ones tha...t our little people look up to for guidance. https://660919d3-b85b-43c3-a3ad-3de6a9d37099.filesusr.com/

09.01.2022 Christmas can be a tricky time for families with a child on the autism spectrum. Children with autism can find the changes in routine and increased sensory perception very challenging! Here are some tips from Sue Larkey, teacher and autism specialist: - Go through each days schedule with your child so they know what to expect - If there will be any changes to the childs routine, notify them as soon as you can - Be aware that Christmas carols and concerts can be overwhelming... for children. Allow them to sit at the back so they can take a break if needed and maybe bring ear plugs for them - Sensory toys are a good way to calm down your child if he/she is distressed - Give the child direct and clear instructions to reduce stress - Create a social story about Christmas presents that explains that the child may or may not like the gifts and how to appropriately say thank you - Let the child know who he/she will be seeing over Christmas and how to greet them - Set a timer so the child knows how long they will be in a certain place - Beware of anything that may cause sensory overload such as music, lights, party crackers and warn the child - Having no surprises for your child with autism is ideal. Maybe label the presents with what is inside or omit wrapping altogether This information was taken from https://www.autism.org.nz//10-tips-for-a-happy-asd-christ/

08.01.2022 Great reminders. With very young children I would focus on supportive silence and not rush into problem solving, as they need a slower pace. Thanks to A Bilingual Childhood Education Blog by Magdalena S. Palencia for posting.

07.01.2022 At Cherished Minds we have been so very proud of how the clients, families and staff have managed the continuation of therapy supports during the COVID-19 isolation period. As we begin to move back to face to face therapy, Cherished Minds will be implementing an interim plan for some families to resume face to face therapy in a structured way so that we can reduce crowding in the clinic and continue to follow social distancing guidelines. Make sure to give us a call and speak with your treating Practitioner if you have any questions about when you can come back into the clinic.
