25.01.2022 Still working hard for all our members with fantastic support from JoeTannaus and the team from Cornerstone Group. Looking forward to updating the members at the Conference on Friday 11th May.

25.01.2022 Membership of CHERPA requires adherence to a strict code of conduct that protects vulnerable consumers and members. We call on all consumer leasing businesses to join us today and become part of a strong and effective peak body.

25.01.2022 CHERPA is defending our industry in the media. This is what our President had to say in The Guardian online last week: The industry association representing rent-to-buy companies the Consumer Household Equipment Rental Providers Association says the sector is unfairly maligned for the actions of a few bad operators. Its president, Steven King, said the 2015 Asic report was outdated and flawed. He said it did not reflect an industry with low complaint rates, high customer... satisfaction and strong oversight through an industry code of conduct, Asic regulation and scrutiny from Centrelink staff. The whole system is not corrupt because of one or two people, but sadly for some reason people ... focus on those things, rather than the good we do, King said. Yes, we charge more than the recommended retail price of goods, but that’s because we’re not selling something to someone, we’re leasing it to them. And we’re leasing it to them with all the services that go with it ... and all the risks that go with it. The four companies disciplined by Asic were not part of his association, King said. King said Centrepay was a wonderful blessing for customers, which was voluntary and cost-free. He said it also helped rent-to-buy businesses get a degree of security for payments. See more

24.01.2022 For a low income family visiting a laundromat can be much more expensive than leasing a washing machine. Proposed Federal Government changes to consumer leasing laws deny people the choice! Check out our campaign website to find out more www.thewholestory.net.au

23.01.2022 It's a big thumbs down from us! Federal Government changes to consumer leasing laws will hurt our customers and our industry. Find out more by visiting our campaign website www.thewholestory.net.au

20.01.2022 The biggest losers in credit sector reform are likely to be consumers. But don't take our word for it check out a recent report by an RMIT academic who says it could "significantly affect the well being of households - particularly those on low incomes". 15.01.2022 GOVERNMENT’S CREDIT REFORMS STRIKE THE RIGHT BALANCE IN PROTECTING CONSUMERS WHILE PRIORITISING JOBS AND GROWTH CHERPA welcomes today’s economic reform announcement by the Federal Government that ensures Australians get access to credit and consumer leases in a socially responsible way. These credit reforms will be a much needed shot in the arm to the Australian economy and give confidence and certainty to small businesses and consumers.... The reforms as they apply to consumer leases ensure all Australians can access consumer leases and protections already provided by CHERPA members who abide by a strict Code of Conduct. The consumer protections proposed by the Federal Government today are available to those Australians who have a consumer lease from a CHERPA member. CHERPA has been long calling for legislative certainty for consumers and consumer lease providers that includes both a cap on total lease payments (including GST, delivery and installation fees) and a protected earnings amount of 20 per cent of net income for consumers. The Treasurer and Assistant Treasurer have listened to consumer and industry feedback and struck the balance in ensuring consumer lease providers can survive and consumers can continue to buy basic white goods and other products. CHERPA looks forward to working with the Government and Treasury to ensure the legislation achieves the intent of the announcement and works for small business and consumers.

14.01.2022 We think every family should have access to essential household goods. Changes to the consumer leasing laws proposed by the Federal Government could deny tens of thousands of people access to these items. Get the whole story at our website www.thewholestory.net.au

11.01.2022 Check out the new campaign website that tells the whole story about proposed changes to consumer lending laws that will restrict access to essential household items by people in need. And it's not just us - our arguments are backed by research by the IPA and an RMIT academic.

10.01.2022 Research from the IPA backs up our industry and says proposed government changes to consumer lending laws would be "thoroughly unjust" and based on "paternalistic assumptions". Get 'The Whole Story' here http://www.thewholestory.net.au/

09.01.2022 CHERPA President Steve King was recently contacted by ABC Radio for comment on a story which went to air this morning. We note that on this issue the Consumer Advocate industry continues to cling to long outdated data from an easily discredited ASIC report, and even though much of Steve's conversation with the reporter did not actually make it to air, we believe the broadcast would have been much more one-sided (with a lot more of the same rhetoric we have heard in the past) ...if it were not for their conversation with Steve. We also take much pride in the fact that it is CHERPA that continues to be recognised as the authoritative voice of the consumer leasing industry. 06.01.2022 The Australian Taxpayers' Alliance has taken up the call to champion for small business and consumer rights sighting that; "The small loans and consumer good leasing changes are a shameless attack on our right to access essential items. They will not only deny hardworking families an important lifeline. They will also decimate small businesses and jobs." Check out the link, sign the petition and get behind this initiative.... http://www.taxpayers.org.au/credit_for_all

05.01.2022 People need quick access to essential household items. If the government pushes through proposed consumer lending laws vulnerable people will miss out. Check out our website for the whole story!

01.01.2022 On Tuesday the 9th of May the Government delivered its budget for the 2017 -2018 financial year. CHERPA was invited by Mr Jason Falinski MP to attend a special budget breakfast event to network with key Government people. We were also able to take the time to meet with the new Centrepay National Manager, Bruce Taloni, who has taken over from Alex Anderson as the Manager looking after Centrepay policy and his assistant Andrew Selkirk before the event.... After arriving at Mr Falinski's in the late afternoon, President Steve King and CEO Andrew Gresswell found themselves discussing our industry and its issues with several key Ministers which including but not limited to; Senator the Hon Mr Arthur Tsinodinos, Minister for Industry, Innovation and Science Hon Peter Dutton MP, Minister for Immigration and Border Protection, and Hon Steven Ciobo MP, Minister for Trade, Tourism and Investment Worthy of specific mention is meeting (again) with Minister McCormack where they had a bit of fun swapping stories and photos on recent personal events. Importantly and on a serious note we reaffirmed our need to meet again and our absolute commitment to bring solutions, being a part of the solution and to doing the work needed to benefit all. This was well received and acknowledged by Mr McCormack and we are looking forward to working further together. We are very proud of the work that has been, and still is, being done to protect the industry and to be a heard, respected voice in Canberra which is now showing some extraordinary results to date. Thanks to all for providing ongoing support. A special thanks to those providing above and beyond financial support.
