16.01.2022 UPDATE ON FIRE HARZARD MULCH PILE ON BEAUMONT ROAD MT KURING-GAI As many residents know, there has been a huge stockpile of mulch at a business in the Mt Kuring...-gai industrial area, that has spontaneously combusted recently on three separate occasions over the past two or three weeks. I have been out onsite to see the issue and meet with a number of owners of affected adjacent local businesses. I have spoken to and received emails from a number of understandably concerned residents in both Mt Kuring-gai and Berowra. This is obviously of great concern to everyone especially in the current conditions. Relevant senior staff from Hornsby Council have been working closely with other agencies, including RFS & Fire & Rescue NSW (FRNSW) to manage the best way to safely deal with this potentially very dangerous issue, in the most timely manner. Both the RFS and FRNSW have been onsite in the past few days and pumped a considerable amount of water and foam on and around the mulch heap. The current plan of action is to have the owner of the business excavate and wet down the pile as required and this is currently happening. RFS and FRNSW are concerned that removal of the mulch will cause a greater potential for combustion, and hence create a greater risk. I have also been advised that FRNSW will continue to monitor and assess the situation and ensure an appropriate presence at the location (particularly during the extreme conditions on Saturday) until the site is deemed safe. If you have any questions on this issue please feel free to email me and I will get you a response as soon as I can. [email protected] or call 0403 227 560 A reminder that there is a statewide TOTAL FIRE BAN commencing 00.01am Friday 3rd January and ceasing 23.59 hours Saturday 4th January 2020.

11.01.2022 The Hornsby Shire Council will be planting mangroves along the foreshore of the Hawkesbury River to improve the resilience of the river and its surrounding envi...ronment. Fun fact about mangroves : they are the only species of tree that can live in salt water which is perfect for waterways like the Hawkesbury River which has a mix of fresh and salt water. It is great to be able to contribute $18,000 towards this project which will not only enhance the rivers beauty but also assist in maintaining a clean river and create habitats for fish and other wildlife.

03.01.2022 IMPORTANT INFORMATION FROM TELSTRA ABOUT BUSHFIRE COMMUNICATIONS: During bushfires and other extreme weather events, communication infrastructure can be at risk.... Therefore its important to have an alternative source of information available that does not rely on being connected. With tomorrows forecast of catastrophic fire conditions across Greater Sydney and the Hunter Region, here are a number of things you can be doing to stay connected: Stay charged: if the power goes out during a disaster, mobile phones could run out of power. you could consider a fully charged external power source such as a power bank, a solar power charger or have an in-car charger at the ready. Satellite phones: in some cases, damaged infrastructure and other factors out of our control can temporarily disrupt fixed and mobile networks in disaster areas. Know your numbers: its important to know emergency service numbers in times of natural disasters. Storing a list of emergency numbers such as the local Police, Fire and SES teams in the area, as well as numbers for friends and family is important. Home phones on the nbn are different: Where nbn delivers fixed line home phone services, it will be unavailable during a power outage where there is no power supply back up. Its best to have a mobile phone or satellite phone handy for this instance, especially in remote areas. Download emergency services apps: These official apps will give you the most up-to-date information on whats happening in your area, including natural disaster warnings. Use local information sources: Online, dashboards and social media accounts for local councils and authorities and emergency services will share crucial information https://www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/plan-and/bush-fire-survival-plan
