25.01.2022 #knowyourfarmer !! The colour of these yolks for brekkie this morning are vibrant, a reflection of the seasons, lots of rain = lush greens and weeds for the hens to forage in and peck at, top nutrients in a hens diet means great tasting eggs #knowyourlabels !! I'm often asked about the wording on egg carton labels, which can be confusing for the customer......... so..... Cage eggs = yuk!! I would not purchase!! Barn eggs = hens that live in a shed Free range eggs = hens that have access to outside Free range/pastured eggs = hens that are moved regularly with access to pasture Organic eggs = no nasties sprayed on the farm Organically certified eggs = the farmer will be certified with an organic body and the farm will be visited yearly, no nasties, clean farm inputs, hens will eat organic feed Biodynamic eggs = the Rolls Royce of certification, organic farming according to the ideas of Rudolph Steiner, Biodynamic feed fed to hens #knowyourfarmer !! So FYI our hens are Free Range/Pastured (no nasties) and our family run farm was Organically Certified for 10 years and has been sprayed with Biodynamic inputs twice during this time. So what has changed ? Nothing - we do the same as we have been doing on the farm for over 10 years, just with out the farm having an Organic stamp.....

19.01.2022 On the farm the hens get to lay in clean straw and dried grass clippings. Chickens love to make nests, they will pull up materials around them to make sure that they are quite comfortable and once the egg is laid they will make enough noise to let you know of their success.

15.01.2022 Sunday = cake day After the heat of the last couple of days it's okay now to put the oven on ! ! ! This cake is super easy, feeds a crowd, NO flour......... Recipe: 2 x (420g) cans of beans drained (I used kidney & black bean) Good amount of olive oil or veg oil or 250 gram butter 4 teaspoons of instant coffee (optional) melted in a cup with hot water Good splash of vanilla essence or the scrappings of a vanilla pod Couple large pinches of sea salt Muscovado sugar and/or raw sugar about 300 grams (Yep that's alot of sugar but it's a big cake!!! easy 16 generous slices , you can use less sugar but it can be quite bitter) 1 tablespoon of molasses (optional) gives depth of flavour Organic cacao powder 150 grams (you can add a bit more!) 10 good sized eggs, free ranged/pastured Mix this lot together in a large bowl (I usually use a saucepan!!) with a stick blender or processor, this batter is quite runny, don't panic! Chuck in a large tin that is lined with 3 layers of baking paper, and put into the oven (about 180) for about 1 hour or so. In my oven it's about and hour and a quarter). This will also depend on using a fan, just check it. When the cake is out of the oven and still hot, place a bar of dark chocolate on top to melt and then blanket over the cake, top with dried flowers This cake is moist, keeps for ages, will freeze well. Happy Sunday everyone

10.01.2022 We love this apple scrap vinegar for humans and for our chickens
10.01.2022 After the chicken round, it is time for morning tea with Ilan and kai-lan flowers! We like to have a bit of ceremony around our morning cuppas, the pot gets pre-heated, honey is harvested from our busy bees and the milk is from our neighbours beautiful cows. Tea this morning, a freshly ground chai masala from Made of Earth. Kai-lan is a chinese brocolli/kale, we eat the whole plant in stirfrys, soups and the flowers add a delicate flavour to salads. How do you like your morning cuppa ?
