25.01.2022 A compelling opinion piece by Dr Tim Soutphommasane calling for trust and unity: "Having pulled up the drawbridge for now, there’s a risk of our national sentiment becoming too insular, too defensive. What’s needed isn’t so much a rallying cry of sovereignty, but one of nation-building. If we need trust, it’s not only trust in government, it’s trust among citizens. The kind of nation we rebuild the kind of social contract we re-enact will be determined not just by govern...ment, but by us as citizens. In these extraordinary times, nearly all our lives have grown more ordinary. The little things, the small gestures and exchanges between us, have taken on new meaning. All the more reason to stamp out the racism, often insidious, creeping into the lives of many of our fellow Australians." Dr Tim will be joined by CAF president, Jason Li today for an online chat on COVID-19 racism with 'Australia At Home': Time: Wednesday, April 15, 2020 (1:00 PM - 2:00 PM) Register Now: https://bit.ly/2RTALBt #UnityOverFear Our petition has just hit 12,000 supporters. 07.01.2022 Chin Tan - Race Discrimination Commissioner and Benjamin Law on The Project addressing the increase in racial abuse during COVID-19. Ben talks about why he's pledged to choose #UnityOverFear: bit.ly/unityoverfear I think the catalyst was seeing how it had started seeping out of just conspiracy theories and racist memes. And into a lot more mainstream news reporting, apparently Asian Australians or Chinese people stocking up on supplies they weren’t supposed to and often thes...e came from reports that were completely unsubstantiated and unverified sources. I think Australians have reached a boiling point. We pride ourselves on not being a racist society but when it’s starting to have these flash points where people are feeling and getting attacked in the streets, something has to shift. Sign the petition now. Add your name to stand in solidarity with the Asian community in Australia and send a clear message that you choose #UnityOverFear: bit.ly/unityoverfear
02.01.2022 [Edit] Our petition is now live at bit.ly/unityoverfear. Sign now and pledge to choose #unityoverfear Original Post: Chinese-Australians pen open letter about 'escalation in racial abuse' during Coronavirus Pandemic Sixteen prominent Chinese-Australians, including CHAMP Ventures' Su-Ming Wong, businessman [and CAF President] Jason Yat-Sen Li and writer Benjamin Law, have penned an open letter urging national unity and expressing concern that a "recent rise in anti-Chinese ...sentiment is driving a marked escalation in racial abuse towards Asian Australians." "Whilst robust debate about the bilateral relationship between Australia and China is appropriate and important especially in the context of the protection of our democratic institutions and values it is essential that the distrust, disenfranchisement and vilification of Asian Australians not be tolerated at any level," the letter reads. 02.01.2022 Read CAF President Jason Yat-Sen Li’s OpEd on The Guardian calling for a stop to the racial abuse of Asian Australians. Add your name and share the petition to join in solidarity: change.org/unityoverfear But racism in Australia is not about China’s government, it is about us. We say while it is legitimate to criticise the CCP for its actions that go against Australian values, it is important not to take that out on Chinese Australians. Indeed, to say the Chinese Australians... have brought this on themselves by poor behaviour or that they have not done enough to call out racism in China, is no better than victim-blaming. ...To distrust, disenfranchise and vilify our fellow citizens would eat us from within it is not only fundamentally contrary to the Australian values we seek to uphold, but would do more damage to our democracy than any foreign power ever could. #UnityOverFear Sign the petition now: change.org/unityoverfear https://www.theguardian.com//dont-take-it-out-on-asian-aus
