22.01.2022 While education is free in Fiji, children growing up in informal squatter settlements can still fall behind and leave school early because basic school suppl...ies including pens, rulers and schoolbags are not affordable for their families. At Nanogirl Labs we believe that education helps to break the poverty cycle, and with girls at the highest risk for dropping out of school we teamed together Graduate Women Fiji to create a STEM camp for girls in Suva while also training local graduate women to teach the programs in their own communities. The impact from this project can be seen here: https://tinyurl.com/yxscf8mk We are continuing to support the families of the girls from our camp by providing school uniforms, school bags, school shoes and all essential school stationary. 15.01.2022 *****Midday Update - 27 December 2019***** A GALE WARNING REMAINS IN FORCE FOR VANUA LEVU, TAVEUNI AND NEARBY SMALLER ISLANDS, YASAWA AND MAMANUCA GROUP, KADAVU..., LOMAIVITI GROUP, VITI LEVU AND NEARBY SMALLER ISLANDS. A STRONG WIND WARNING REMAINS IN FORCE FOR THE LAU GROUP AND ROTUMA. A HEAVY RAIN WARNING REMAINS IN FORCE FOR THE ENTIRE FIJI GROUP. For Flood Warning check http://www.met.gov.fj/index.php?page=warn1#20016.txt At 10am the centre of Cat 1 TC Sarai was located about 250km northwest of Nadi. The cyclone is moving south at around 22 kph at this time but is forecast move more southeast this afternoon and slow down its forward speed to about 10-12 kph. Forecasts place the centre about 170km west-northwest of Nadi at around 7pm this evening. At this time it is likely to be a Category 2 tropical cyclone Heavy rain has been reported in Nausori and Suva in recent hours. A flash flood warning is now in force for the entire central division. It is likely that this warning will extend to the western division before the afternoon is over with bands of heavy rain on the radar moving down over Viti Levu from the north at this time. Weather will deteriorate rapidly over the western division this afternoon with winds strengthening damaging Gale Force and rain increasing with widespread heavy falls. After dark tonight the damaging winds and heavy rain will spread across southern Viti Levu from the Coral Coast to Suva and including Vatulele, Beqa and Kadavu. Mariners should stay ashore and secure vessels and port facilities from likely large swells and possible coastal storm surges and sea flooding. Listen for advisory messages from local authorities. Stay out of flood waters. Secure loose materials and if you have not done so already please ensure shutters are in place as a matter of urgency. Na Draki Weather
