25.01.2022 Here’s one for the PTs/Coaches Knowing what not to do is every bit as important, as knowing what to do with your clients! As a coach, your job is to get the best results from your clients using the safest methods possible! ... And for the majority of coaches that are working with general population, this is going to mean sticking to basic movements and simplicity. Simple programming and basic exercise selection will 9/10 result in better adherence from your client and in turn deliver better results. So how do you know what exercises are the right choice for your client? Movement screening!! This is easily one of the most important yet most overlooked aspects of training that I see new PTs and even some experienced PTs skip. Performing a movement screen allows you to get an overview of that persons movement capacity. Where their restrictions/limitations and weaknesses are. Think of it like taking your car in for a service. If you plan on putting your car through it’s paces on a race track, you sure as hell want to make sure that everything is functioning properly before you start racing it! If you rock up on race day with a dodgy suspension that hasn’t been checked, then proceed to flog the car around the track, you can bet it’s only a matter of time before something comes undone. So why bother with a movement screen? What does it tell us? Assessing each joint from ankle to neck gives a full picture of what movements your body is capable of / safe to load vs what movements are slightly higher risk / aren’t quite ready to be loaded just yet. Exercise selection should always be individualised, and based on the results of a thorough movement screen. Whilst Barbell movements provide a tremendous amount of bang for their buck, they are also very unforgiving and require a decent amount of movement capacity to perform. So, knowing which exercises to select (variations) and what exercises to avoid (high risk) play a huge role in getting safe and lasting results for your clients!! Every exercise in your program should be there for a reason, don’t pick random exercises because you saw it on Instagram and think it’s cool. Pick exercises based on the goals & ability of your clients!

14.01.2022 Only a few days back I posted Adrian’s squat progression where we highlighted the difference in form. Go back to my last post to check it out. Today he hit an all time PB and joined the 3 Plate club Squatting a respectable 140kegs What’s more impressive to me is the quality of his form. ... Watch how he struggles to move the weight but manages to maintain position throughout the rep. This displays how much better balanced (muscular balance) his body is now compared to where it was a few months ago when his form would compromise under load. 14.01.2022 Big shout out to TeamCHPT Athlete @kristyyireland who qualified for states yesterday Last year Kristy took out the win at Nationals as a junior, this year she is in the open class and qualified with a 320kg Total. Our game plan was to keep it really conservative and leave plenty of kilos in the tank as Kristy only needed a 300 total to qualify and with States only 10 weeks away we didn’t need to push for any big numbers or PBs... Kristy hit Squat - 130kg apart from the miss groove, it moved pretty fast and felt like there was plenty more in the tank. 03.01.2022 Progress doesn’t always have to mean extra load on the Bar! Check out the Squat improvements from online client @Adrian First Video 127.5kg compromised form... Second video 130kg much tighter Videos are 4 weeks apart First image and video you can see how his hips shoot up early when he comes out of the hole in his squat, this leaves him in a very compromised position and turns his squat into more of a good morning. This is a very common issue and will lead you into hitting a road block with your strength stalling as your technique is compromised or even worse injury. After a few weeks of targeted mobility and practicing new cues, he can now maintain a much tighter position throughout his reps (2nd image and video) Now that he is in a better position through his rep, it’s only a matter of time now before we start loading more weight on the bar and build some quality strength without being at risk of injury!
