25.01.2022 A Muslim reflection on the significance of Ashura, the 10th day of the month of Muharram, shows how faith in God overcomes tyrants in the story of Moses in the Quran, in the martyrdom of Hussain, and the victims of the Christchurch killer.

25.01.2022 "When I read Pope Francis' new encyclical on solidarity, I saw a passionate clarion call from the leader of the only other religious community with comparable diversity and numbers, similarly exhorting his followers to higher moral-ethical ideals in a shared idiom. But it was within the particularities of that idiom that paradoxically made it resonate universally. Too often does interfaith engagement center commonality at the expense of difference, but it is precisely in embracing the latter that true solidarity is affirmed."

23.01.2022 Naidoc Week postponed for November! Like many Australians, we were anticipating Naidoc Week this week, a time when we celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. But in the interest and safety of the communities during the COVID-19 pandemic, celebrations are now postponed for 8-12 November. This year's Naidoc theme is "Always Was, Always Will Be", in recognition of First Nations people occupation and care for this contine...nt for more than 65,000 years. In the meantime, I encourage you to read a newly released annual report to Parliament called 'Closing the Gap'. It calls on government to commit to achieving equality for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in health and life expectancy within a generation. You can view the report in full at https://ctgreport.niaa.gov.au/ #naidoc2020

22.01.2022 Today marks the 75th anniversary of the atomic bombing of Japanese city Hiroshima. At 8:15am on 6 August 1945, an American B-29 bomber dropped the worlds first atom bomb over the city of Hiroshima, obliterating the city and instantly killing 80,000 people, while 35,000 died later due to burns, other injuries and radiation sickness. Three days later another bomb dropped on the city of Nagasaki. The impact of such utter destruction is still felt today. In support of the Treat...y on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, the Columban Centre for Christian-Muslim Relations, along with 58 faith-based organisations, has signed an Interfaith Open Letter initiated by ICAN Australia and the Uniting Church in Australia Assembly. It will be sent to the Prime Minister Scott Morrison, the leader of the Opposition, Anthony Albanese, and all federal parliamentarians. Please share the letter with your communities, networks and on social media, in support of eliminating nuclear weapons. 18.01.2022 Note: Many will be touched by death in this pandemic; thus, it is important to emphasize that this piece by a Muslim author is not intended for those grieving. ...Rather, it shares some reflections for those whose hearts are unburdened by immediate loss, but who feel a particular dread around death nonetheless. 05.01.2022 "Celebrate Diversity" is the theme of this year's World Environment Day. "The foods we eat, the air we breathe, the water we drink and the climate that makes our planet habitable all come from nature. Yet, these are exceptional times in which nature is sending us a message: To care for ourselves we must care for nature. Its time to wake up. To take notice. To raise our voices. Its time to build back better for People and Planet. This World Environment Day, its Time #ForNature".

This year’s theme is Always Was, Always Will Be. Always Was, Always Will Be. recognises that First Nations people have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years. This acknowledges that hundreds of Nations and our cultures covered this continent. All were managing the land - the bigges...t estate on earth - to sustainably provide for their future.
