25.01.2022 A challenge today on many levels. A commission piece for starters. Plus these are very special horses, so in essence a double portrait. And the only animals I’ve done before were dogs and chooks. I’ll keep you posted....

23.01.2022 Cropping is a great way to play with composition. It can totally change the look of a painting. Which one do you like best?

23.01.2022 I’m very happy how this turned out. I used paper that is smoother than the textured paper I usually use. Limited palette of French ultramarine, raw sienna , sepia. I used a flat hog bristle brush to add the tree line and some of the foreground, and a small spray bottle to keep the colours running down the page. The operative word in this medium is WATER. Water makes watercolours sing. You can never fully control what is going to happen but the little surprises that occur are often delightful.

23.01.2022 A little experiment this afternoon. Dropping water into paint already on the paper causes blooms or’cauliflowers’ - usually to be avoided at all costs- but today I wanted to see if they would make a tree canopy. Once on the paper the water goes where it will . the blooms went a bit too far up the page and that meant I had very very tall trees.I’ll file this one in the ‘lessons learned file’ for now.

22.01.2022 I never thought I would/ could do abstract or semi abstract but this was a joy to paint. Only three colours and lots of water, a spray bottle and an old credit card and a bamboo stick , not a paintbrush in sight. What do you see?

20.01.2022 I had to stop before I dripped in my painting. What a hot day today and tomorrow looks set to be worse. ‘Around the Bend’

19.01.2022 ‘Grass trees in the Rain’ A4 watercolour I’m a bit hooked on rainy skies at the moment...

17.01.2022 Intuitive landscape

13.01.2022 These amazing acacias grow in many twisted forms and make a great subject for a painting.

11.01.2022 Trying out a new method today. I’m calling it ‘wet in wet in wet then some more wet’. I might tweak this piece more yet just to have a play.

11.01.2022 ‘Outback after Rain’ The red dirt turns to mud after years of drought.

11.01.2022 It took me a while to get to this fellow. As per request...next in line a hare , an elephant and a meerkat. Add your request in the comments if you wish.

11.01.2022 ‘Grasstrees in the Rain’ A4 watercolour

10.01.2022 Still experimenting with different ways to apply colour loosely. The foundation layers are done with a credit card , then I finished with some brush work. I promised to post the good the bad and the ugly on my page , so here goes. I have learned not to mind if a painting flops. I learn so much more from them than I do from my better efforts. Top photo is finished painting. Bottom is the layer created with the credit card and spray bottle. Click for full view. Any suggestions for a new colour scheme for another experiment? Pick three colours. First in gets their colour scheme on a landscape.

10.01.2022 More trees, can you guess I like trees lol. I was fortunate to go out bush last week and caught the early morning sun over rosewood country near Duaringa , Central Queensland . The fog was lying in the distance in the valley. I’ll have another crack at this one as a few things went askew. The answer will be to simplify even more to let the light do its thing.

09.01.2022 SOLD! I changed this one a bit . The water was just too blue for Australia. After I toned it down I was much happier with it. Going to it’s forever home after I finish mounting it.

08.01.2022 On a roll and having fun exploring very wet watercolour . Mat frames with clear cellophane bags are coming in the post soon so these paintings can be presented nicely , protected , and ready to post for Christmas.

07.01.2022 A marvellous thing happened while I was painting and finishing this piece yesterday. I lost all sense of time and the paint just seemed to flow. Then today I stumbled across this amazingly spot on quote which sums up my experience. Favorite Quote of the Day from composer John Cage: When you start working, everybody is in your studiothe past, your friends, enemies, the art world, and above all, your own ideasall are there. But as you continue painting, they start leaving, ...one by one, and you are left completely alone. Then, if you’re lucky, even you leave. While...working, balancing a critical eye with spontaneity. It was a rocky start and I nearly binned it, but then thought I may as well give it a go and see if I could rescue it first. This is Ormiston Gorge in outback Australia. Much of Australia is all about the colour red. The colour of rust.. Click through for full photos of the painful but ultimately rewarding process.

06.01.2022 Reminder to self ... negative painting of fur is not so much fun. Another request done and dusted. I was having a bad hare day

05.01.2022 This one is nearly finished . I’ll post the final painting and the struggles I had later on. I’ll also find out the name of this gorge .

04.01.2022 A little fun and experimenting today . Not really happy with how it turned out but learning all the time. Not sure about the red and the scale of my hoomans is a bit skewed. However it’s always fun putting it into a virtual frame....

03.01.2022 An old stone homestead abandoned to the sand of the desert. Our pioneers had a lot of guts to go out into the red heart of Australia and try to make a home and a living for their families.

03.01.2022 The Australian landscape feels so vast and empty sometimes, and sometimes that’s just what a person needs..... room to breathe....room to think.... room to feel.... ‘Empty’ Watercolour on 1/4 sheet imperial ( just smaller than A3)

02.01.2022 Loving my new colours! Aussie Red Gold and Quinacridone Burnt Orange. Beautiful outback colours I reckon. Photo courtesy of Andrea Chapman from her latest outback adventure.
