24.01.2022 You are invited to For the Love of the Australian Bush. Exhibition by Willemina Foeken. DJCA Studio 97C Flora Terrace, N Beach, WA... Opening Sun 8 March 3 - 5 pm Exhibition open till 19 March 10 - 4 daily. Artist’s statement From the time I arrived in Australia in 1953, I loved the bush with those gumtrees oozing red gum and dropping honky nuts, the straggly banksias and those wonderful kangaroo paws! Later, I discovered there was much more to the bush. From the time I was 12, I used to take off on my bike with my case of oil paints and collapsible easel and cycle from Cloverdale to Lesmurdie, to do some painting. Later, I became an art teacher, wife, mother and illustrator. But I wanted to explore art much more so did a degree and post-grad degree while still teaching Art at schools, in my own studio and TAFE. I also taught ESL and Academic Skills at Edith Cowan University. The visual world is a constant delight to me and transforming that into art is a challenge that never fails to entice. I still teach teens and adults in my Southern River studio. 60% of all funds from this exhibition will go to the UC National Disaster Relief Fund.

23.01.2022 I’m definitely fitting a stay at the Gladstone Library hotel into my UK itinerary

23.01.2022 "in his posthumously published book called Brief Answers To The Big Questions, even though it might look that he claims we are doomed, he still preserves the hope that human wisdom and innovation will prevent the destruction of our species."

23.01.2022 This sounds like an interesting read

19.01.2022 For all writers out there, you may be interested in checking out my author website for an article I have written on how I managed to get a literary agent. Go to LORETTASMITHWORDSMITH.COM.AU. You will find it under ARTICLES on the menu :-)

19.01.2022 I am finding some lovely reviews about my Audiobook, so for the next few days I am going to blow my own trumpet. Felt true. Unforgettable main character. This story sounded like it was passed down from a family member who knew the people and details. What a rich and intricate life the characters had! Even though the everyday efforts to get food and shelter were undeniably difficult, somehow the people had an honesty that does not seem to be present today. Maybe that's just ...my imagination. The harsh living conditions and lack of nutrition are something that we in the 21st century U.S. have not had to experience and it's quite painful to read about, but I was glad to be reminded that things are so much better in many ways than they were 100 years ago. The narration brought something very special to this story, but I am partial to C. McCarron after listening to "Eleanor Oliphant is completely fine." I'll be looking for more books by this author - she has something. See more

19.01.2022 Beautiful and fun.

18.01.2022 A great day yesterday at an event organised by Fremantle Press part of the Writers' Festival at UWA: The Business of Being a Writer. We heard from book professionals who gave some salient pointers for aspiring authors about publishing and marketing. It was heartening to know that many of the well-known writers were self-published. And inspiring to hear the teething problems of, now very successful authors, like Craig Silvey. The best thing was connecting to other writers. I sat next to a fascinating woman whose story, is in the early stages. It is so interesting and unique and I am confident she will publish it and look forward to reading it.

16.01.2022 I was chuffed to receive a half-decent royalty payment yesterday after the piddling amounts that have been coming in. I honestly couldn't give a rats about the money but it's nice to know that TWA is not completely lost in internet land, and prompts me to publish the finished manuscript that is languishing on my computer. If you have read or listened to the book and get the urge to write a review on Goodreads or Amazon - don't fight it - it all helps.

15.01.2022 How to keep yourself occupied during social isolation due to the coronavirus. Send your manuscript off to a publisher. It’s no mean feat. So much to get right. One little mistake and you know you’re dead. Write a cover letter. Make sure it includes all the right things. A good biography, now that takes some juggling. How do you write your life story in 100 words? What to put inwhat to leave out? And then comes the synopsis. Retell your 90 000 word novel in 300 words.... Answer all the questions, some not so bad but the killer is: What book do you think your book is most comparable to? I CAN’T ANSWER THAT! I can tell you lots of great books by amazing authors that I would have loved to have written. However, I am not Hilary Mantel or Richard Flannigan or Barbara Kingsolver or any of my other heroes. I think this is such an unfair question. I can’t see the point. WHAT DO YOU THINK? See more
