22.01.2022 Bushfire hit us hard in Moruya and surrounds with two large fires merging and and a lot areas and businesses impacted. Yuki and Fudji still know how to party even in the midst of the terror. Its quieter today but the fires are close and the water planes are flying low overhead. I was expecting to open my stall @moruya_country_markets tomorrow, but uncertain at this point. Im sorry there will be delay in getting my recent orders completed because Ive had to evacuate. 05.01.2022 Beauty! The echidna is back I thought to myself when I heard Yuki and Fudji barking at something on the other side of the chicken wire fence. In lieu of an echidna I spotted a sizeable red belly black snake slinking around in the agapanthus by the front door steps. My dogs seemed fine so we went for a walk. You know where this is going. A couple of hours later Yuki started chewing her paws, first one then all four. She pawed at her nose a bit and was having trouble toileting ...but was otherwise her usual energetic self. There are plenty of prickles around and they get stuck in her fury feet. So nothing unusual. We came home and she was pretty thirsty and panting more than Fudji. Starting to worry. Then I noticed her swollen nose. Straight into the car and in under five minutes we were in the fabulous care of the Dr Nicole and the lovely caring staff at the Moruya Veterinary Hospital. Yuki had antivenin, antihistamine and spent two nights in hospital on a drip. Shes home now and doing well. Her clinical notes from last night read "very bright pulling nurses around". Good girl Yuki. If I hadnt seen the snake myself I wouldnt have suspected snake bite. Yuki seemed very normal until she wasnt. The snake bit her inside her lip, apparently quite common. Ive been so careful to clear my yards, I dont leave water or food sources around, my dogs stay inside and I exercise them in open fields or on the beach and it still happened. Thousands of dogs have encounters with snakes each year, and not only country dogs. Snake avoidance training is the best thing I can do for my dogs now and Im on a mission to make it happen. I am so grateful to everyone at Moruya Veterinary Hospital for the rapid and professional care they gave us and for saving my precious little Yuki.
