The work is by talented Lorraine Connelly-Northey, using materials found on her and her mother's Waradgerie (Wiradjuri) Country. It was commissioned by Murray Art Museum Albury - known as MAMA in 2017 and is again on show until September. On Country is a nuanced consideration of the Murray River and maps the path of the vital waterways as it courses through the twin cities of Albury and Wodonga. MAMA says "the collection of debris includes the remains of a burnt out farmhouse and the pressed tin ceiling from Albury's former Town Hall. It tells the story that is both intimately personal while also critiquing the effects of human interaction on the natural environment." The work is a map of precolonial settlement and reconsiders the river not as a divisive border but a shared resource, as it has always been. It is an assertive statement of connection to place. You really don’t know where to look first at this beautiful engrossing work.
