25.01.2022 Times are tough in our beloved state of Victoria this week. Thousands more people and organisations will join us in this Great Pause. As one of the first industries to be impacted by restrictions, we know from our experiences how important it is to look after yourself in this time. Whatever you are feeling is totally valid and if you are struggling, remember to reach out. Lifeline offers free counselling over the phone, chat or online: https://www.lifeline.org.au/... Beyond Blue has some great mental health resources specifically focussed on dealing with Covid-19: https://coronavirus.beyondblue.org.au/ The DHHS website has accurate info and an extensive list of support organisations for mental health: https://www.dhhs.vic.gov.au/mental-health-resources-coronav and family violence support: https://www.dhhs.vic.gov.au/family-violence-crisis-response Stay safe and stay connected. Big circus love Victoria.

20.01.2022 We need to think about the next 10 to 15 years and build structures that make sure that we don't lose a generation of artists and a generation of innovation. As restrictions ease and the economy is eased out of hibernation, many arts organisations, including Circus Oz, will not be on the front line of the restart. So what can be done to ensure our industry's economic and social value can continue? The Age has published these highlights from an industry roundtable trying to map the answers and a way forward.

19.01.2022 Gasworks Arts Park Circus Showdown applications are extended to 31 May that gives you 5 more days to apply for this unique professional development program. Performance dates are scheduled for October (subject to restrictions and health advice, of course) and applications are open to individual and group circus or physical theatre acts. What are you waiting for? http://www.gasworks.org.au/circus-showdown-artists/

18.01.2022 Today is International Day of Families and in this time of isolation and great change it’s the perfect reason to celebrate all families those made, chosen and found. So this week we got together with some of our circus family, who have come together and stuck together in so many different ways. Sending love to you and yours. We hope the easing of restrictions has brought some welcome connection with your family whatever it may look like.

11.01.2022 We've been savouring the love from last night’s Green Room Awards where our very own Melba Spiegeltent received the award for best Contemporary & Experimental Performance Program. Shout out to Brian Robertson, Producer of The Melba Spiegeltent for all his hard work, and all the staff, crew and artists for bringing the program to life. Huge congratulations to our very own Carly Switzerland Sheppard (Independent Theatre Award For Performer Love) and to Party Ghost Sidesault... at the Melba alum who took home the Contemporary & Experimental Performance Award For Circus for their 2019 season at The Melba. Big love to all the award winners, nominees and to artists everywhere we salute you for being the light that leads us through dark times. It feels grounding to take stock of the power and importance of live performance in our lives, and to look forward to times when we can once again come together to celebrate.

11.01.2022 Black. Lives. Matter. We are sending love and strength to those resisting in the US and all over the world. And to the Traditional Owners and First People of this land we call Australia, who have known the same atrocities and experience the highest rate of incarceration in the world, we stand in solidarity. Today we urge everyone to contribute to the dismantling of this inequitable system by beginning or continuing your education on racism and white privilege and to stand wit...h us in the commitment to be actively anti-racist. If you are financially able, donate to a fund that supports justice and equity for First Nations people. You can also donate time or services. Check out this excellent list of organisations (thanks for this resource Kira Puru) https://docs.google.com//1kpse8wqYdjmPrtJPLWnT4RPKVK/edit If you are planning on attending one of the many rallies around the country this week we encourage everyone to be safe. 10.01.2022 Our Executive Director, Penny Miles was recently invited by The Circus Arts Hub to speak on this international update panel. A great watch for anyone interested in how the circus arts are fairing globally through the pandemic, how we can harness our collective voice and our artform's inherent adaptability for now and in a post-pandemic future. The Circus Arts Hub is a new, independent industry resource developed by an inimitable group of circus professionals, including our very own Antonella Casella.

10.01.2022 Nothing can stop the creative energy of circus artists - certainly not the lockdowns in Melbourne nor the current constant yo-yo of restrictions. In this video get a glimpse of what they have been up to in our six-week online program that challenged seven circus artists to consider a pandemic-proof Melbourne through the lens of circus. Many thanks to participating artists; Chad Albinger, Sam Aldham, Will Anton, Anna Lumb, Pete Sanders, Lucy Tan and Josie Wardrope. This project was facilitated by Rockie Stone and made possible thanks to the City of Melbourne.

08.01.2022 While we’re busy behind the scenes getting ready to reopen, make sure you visit our friends at Comedy Republic who are bringing the festive cheer with their First Annual Christmas Pageant!

06.01.2022 Time is a rare commodity for the arts and we need to use this new resource to our advantage. This is the time to shape a new conversation. For those of you following along the arts sector’s journey through cancellations, funding losses and uncertainty our executive Director, Penny Miles, has a call to creative arms for an industry in crisis.

04.01.2022 As we take our first step out of lockdown, we’re excited to have an opportunity to create a new stage to showcase Melbourne’s vibrant arts community.

04.01.2022 ICYMI: In April we came very close to having to close our doors forever. Like many businesses, the impacts of COVID-19 have hit us hard. We're having to make some big changes to survive, and thrive, when we come out of this Great Pause. Our latest newsletter invites you behind the curtain of Circus Oz as we reimagine our future. 02.01.2022 Circus is a community hive of emotion laughter, enjoyment, sadness whatever’s happening we all feed off it Our Executive Director, Penny Miles and Circa Contemporary Circus Creative Director, Yaron Lifschitz speak with The Age on life and hope for Australian Contemporary Circus in and beyond the pandemic.

02.01.2022 It's a strange and, for many, difficult time. Things are changing so quickly, impacting not only the arts, but communities all over the world. Circus Oz is making some operational changes in response to advice from the federal and state governments. Visit our website for more details but here's a summary: Our tour of Aurora is still underway, however our performance at Hamilton Performing Arts Centre on Wed 18 March has been cancelled. Neon: Reboot and Bubblegum Cabaret h...ave been postponed due to the cancellation of Melbourne International Comedy Festival. Term 1 circus classes are cancelled from tonight and our Autumn School Holiday program is cancelled. Term 2 is currently still open for enrolments. All shows in The Melba Spiegeltent are postponed or cancelled until 19 April. If you have a ticket to one of these events or and enrolment in a class or workshop you are entitled to a refund or credit note. Visit the website for more information. Stay safe, wash your hands and be kind to one another. We look forward coming together with you for laughter and closeness on the other side.

01.01.2022 Like many other arts companies, businesses and people we’ve been adapting to isolation. The last few weeks we’ve met unprecedented challenges. We’ve had to come to terms with a great pause in the delivery of our programs shows, classes, workshops, regional touring, and events at The Melba have been cancelled. Our building, a home to so many circus artists, has been closed to the public. It’s been hard. Our income has been drastically reduced. We’ve been disconnected from ou...r community, our artists and you, our audience. In order to survive these losses we’ve hibernated a large part of our business and we’ve reorganised the way we work so we can look to the future. We’re taking this isolation period as an opportunity to do something we don’t often get to do in the arts to slow down, breathe and look around. To use our creativity. To imagine and plan for a future nobody can quite see yet. To find new ways of working so we can continue to support and engage artists, create work through and post pandemic and keep the lights on for you while our doors are closed. We’re working behind the scenes to rise to these challenges. We welcome you to share this journey with us and continue to be a big part of our inspiration as you always have been. What is it about circus, performing arts or other artforms that is keeping, or could keep you going through this Great Pause? Is your digital feed full to the brim with inspiration or is something lacking? What are you missing most? What are you looking forward to? Now is the perfect time to reflect on what art means to us all.
