18.01.2022 Playground upgrade for Cire Chirnside Christmas has come early for Cire Children’s Services and Kindergarten Chirnside Park with news of a grant of almost $50,000 to upgrade the playground. The area will be further enhanced by a beautiful butterfly habitat which is being developed thanks to another recent grant. The children themselves have played a large part in the upgrade design having brainstormed about what they need with a focus on creating an engaging and interactive... outdoor space. Some of the new additions will include sensory equipment, a cubby house, slide, outdoor musical instruments and a blackboard. The upgrade is being funded through the Department of Education’s Building Blocks 2020-2021 Minor Improvement Program. In the meantime, a Junior Landcare and Biodiversity grant of almost $5000 will fund the butterfly project which includes development of the habitat as well as the purchase of chrysalis kits so the children can witness and learn about the life cycle of a butterfly. The kits will enable the children to follow the growth of butterflies then once fully developed, release them into the habitat. As part of the project, the children will explore which plants need to be planted in the habitat and measure their growth, and research the butterfly chrysalides to see how long they take to hatch. They will also count how many butterflies visit the habitat. Our butterfly project is a wonderfully engaging way to help our children with numeracy, literacy and STEM. It will also help create a beautiful outdoor space where children can spend quiet time and enjoy our natural environment. They will be able to proudly call themselves lepidopterologists and may even learn how to spell the tongue-twisting name of those who study and collect butterflies. 13.01.2022 We have been reflecting on the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The children have participated in yarning circles under our Gunyah - an Aboriginal bush hut, made sensory bottles inspired by the colours of the Aboriginal flag and incorporated a diverse range of toys and indigenous imagery. The children have been connecting with Wurundjeri culture through story telling painting. 09.01.2022 Last week during NAIDOC Week, the children in our toddler room at our Yarra Junction spent time exploring and learning about Bush Tucker. We froze Australian mint into ice cubes for the children to explore using natural wooden hammers. This is a great sensory activity for the children to explore through touch and smell, it also helps develop fine motor skills and cognitive development. Plus it was a perfect way to cool down on a warm day! ...
