24.01.2022 Have you been waking up with the birds? Well it’s time to make your feathered friends count! The Aussie Backyard Bird Count kicks off Monday. This yearly bird count gives BirdLife Australia a valuable snapshot of bird numbers in Australia. All you need is your smartphone or tablet, 20 minutes, and your favourite outdoor space. It could be your backyard, bushwalk, or the beach. Complete as many counts as you like through the week til Sunday. Go to https://aussiebirdcount.org.au to register as a counter and download the app. You’ll get an easy-to-use field guide to help you work out who’s who. Anyone can do it - so grab the family and get counting!

24.01.2022 Still need a Xmas tree? Our tree maze in Civic Park will be packing up on Sunday morning - meaning 120 trees will be in need of a new home! All you have to do is rock up from 7am and make a small contribution to the Salvation Army Christmas Appeal in exchange for a tree. 21.01.2022 106,000 babies lose their lives to miscarriage, stillbirth and newborn death each year. Tonight, Civic clock tower will be shining pink for Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day.

20.01.2022 The wheels are turning on construction of the new cycleway between Newcastle City Centre and Merewether Beach. The $3.1 million first stage will link Merewether Beach to The Junction with a 2.5 metre wide bi-directional path. Construction was brought forward as part of the City’s record $116 million COVID-19-stimulus capital works budget in recognition of residents’ newfound love for cycling during lockdown. Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes and Councillor Carol Duncan met with the team as they worked along Watkins Street. The project has support from the NSW Government under the 2020/21 Walking and Cycling Program. Work on stage one should wrap up towards the middle of next year. 18.01.2022 We are deeply saddened by the passing of City of Newcastle lifeguard Dale Laverty following an incident at Nobbys Beach this morning. Dale was a popular employee with City of Newcastle, and was also an employee with Lake Macquarie City Council. Both Councils are working with their teams who are understandably devastated by Dale's death. We extend our deepest sympathies to Dale's family and are offering support to employees.

It was opened a year later on Dec 14, 1929. Since then, its survived wars and earthquakes, and today is as breathtaking as ever.
