22.01.2022 Getting older is a natural part of life that a lot of people actively try to avoid, because ageing is often associated with frailty, dependence, and health problems. While it’s true that our bodies naturally start losing muscle mass once we hit the 30 year mark (generally at a rate of 5% per decade), this isn’t a concrete jail sentence for our health. Lifting weights You don’t have to lift Olympic- sized weights and become a... professional body builder to keep up your muscle mass as you age (although, you absolutely can if you like!) Having a set of dumbbells, a kettle bell, or any other weight -based equipment around the house isan easy way to encourage you to lift weight on a regular basis. Lifting weights and other strength training exercises works by triggering micro tears in the targeted muscles, that then rebuild and increase in size. By regularly doing strength exercises, you can actively combat the rate of muscle degeneration and reduce the risk of frailty or related injuries and illnesses as you get older. Increasing energy and fitness levels Ageing doesn’t mean we stop doing our day to day activities and chores such as carrying shopping, cleaning, or even maintaining a physical job.Strength training helps to increase your fitness levels as well as build your muscle capabilities, allowing you to keep up with life regardless of age. The better your fitness levels, the more energy you’ll have to do all the things you want and need to do. Burning fat and keeping weight related illness away Strength training burns fat at an impressive rate, helping to keep those creeping calories from affecting an ageing waistline and risk of weight related illnesses such as high blood pressure and cholesterol levels. As we age, it can become a lot more difficult to keep our bodies lean and even lose weight. This can be caused by a lot of factors, some including the decrease in lean muscle mass making it harder for the body to burn higher amounts of calories, as well as lowering your metabolism. Improving your self esteem As you start to see results from strength training and feel more energised to face the day, you may find your self esteem has been elevated. Higher self esteem can help to combat mental health conditions such as anxiety and depression, as well as reducing your cortisol levels (the stress hormone) linked to weight gain, mental health disorders, and high blood pressure. The best perk about strength training, is that it’s never too late to start. Don't know about you but cannot wait to back to the gym.

19.01.2022 These are trying times at the moment with many doors closing. But let's hope as they start to reopen so do new beginnings. We are all in this together!

19.01.2022 Last week I attended a webinar on Staying Mentally Healthy in Challenging Times. Run by Lisa Annese and Beyond Blue. I always love to share a good thing so here are their tips: Stay Connected ... # Re-create new rituals like online catch up with friends, or morning walk around block before logging on to work at home or have lunch together with other household members. # Be sure to get plenty of sleep and rest #Eat healthy #Keep up physical activity - you get to go outside for this one (but be sure to keep social distancing). #Be gentle with yourself Despite all the social media posts of people cleaning all their cupboards, you may not necessarily feel productive all the time and that is ok. In fact dealing with all these changes and extra stresses can be tiring in itself. # Limit your exposure to the news and social media. Get the info you need but too much of it may not be a good thing. # Check out #beyondblue Online Community Forums - there to support each other during the COVID 19.

13.01.2022 As a proud member of the Assocation of Massage Therapists, our VISION that "Australians have access to safe, ethical and evidence-informed massage therapy treatment within the Australian health care system. So with that in mind be assured that in line with government regulations and AMT's bio-security plan I am working really hard now to ensure when massage services do re open, that we are all safe and happily screened from COVID 19.

06.01.2022 If you are like me you are possibly hanging out for therapeutic massage to ease that tension and help relax during these stressful times. In order to keep everyone safe Relax & Rejuvenate Massage & Reiki must keep its doors closed for a little longer. In the meantime here are some practical ideas on how to provide yourself some TLC in the meantime:... # Take a warm magnesium bath (magnesium is an important mineral, playing a role in over 300 enzyme reactions in the human body.) # Use a heat back to reduce tension on your lower back and shoulders. # Get your partner or family member to give you a back rub. # Use a deep heat ointment to ease those deeper aches and pains. # Stretch every morning to welcome the sun and get your body moving. # If you have any ongoing pains or discomfort or are feeling down and struggling please contact your GP. # Keep Calm and Carry On
