25.01.2022 Peony Rose (Paeonia lactiflora) is possibly the most beautiful herb in my dispensary (passionflower, black cohosh and a hawthorn tree in full bloom come pretty close!). And one of my 18 indispensable herbs - a.k.a would be lost without in my herbal practice. . We use the root in herbal medicine, which tastes bitter + sweet and has a cooling, nourishing and moistening effect on the body (I always find this really fascinating, as its flowers unfurl around the Summer Solstice... ). It has a restorative affinity for the female reproductive system, muscles, nervous system and blood. . So when we put that all together into context, us herbalists use Paeony to: . modulate estrogen cool inflammation relieve spasms cleanse the blood and, support both the womb and ovaries to function smoothly. . I prescribe it for folks who tend towards a hot and dry constitution who are experiencing menstrual cycle challenges. Especially if theres a pattern of high estrogen and low progesterone and/or high testosterone or prolactin. . This hormone profile can manifest as irregular cycles, heavy periods with clots, painful periods, fibroids, tender breasts before your period and PCOS. Ill always formulate it for perimenopausal folks who are experiencing any of these alongside hot flashes or night sweats. . I have also found it to be wonderful specific for hormonal acne on the chin that is deep and cystic. . While it can be safe in pregnancy I wouldnt advise it unless youre in the care of a trained herbalist. Sose is 20 drops of tincture in the morning and evening. . Have you used Peony before? 23.01.2022 Ive been blessed to learn from some extraordinary teachers in my journey to becoming a naturopath, herbalist & fertility awareness educator. I stand on the shoulders of giants who have expanded my mind, taught me what needs our attention in this lifetime, nurtured me and inspired the direction on my healing journey. One such teacher entered my life and I literally couldnt sleep for 3 days after. ... I was attending a monthly VicHerbs meeting (a gathering of local naturopaths and herbalists in Melbourne) and Dr Kerry Hampton was presenting her findings of her PhD, looking at womens level of fertility understanding in general practice and IVF clinics. These numbers were astounding (and sadly made complete sense). 2.1% of women trying to conceive for 6 months could accurately identify when she was fertile. In IVF clinics this number was 12.7%. Meaning, 87.3% of women were undergoing high-level intervention without having been educated on how to time intercourse with her fertile window (?!?). 94% wanted access to better education, but didnt know where to go. For birth control, fertility awareness, when taught by a trained professional is 99.4% effective. Yet how many women are given that choice when having that first delicate conversation about contraception as a teenager? These figures, at the time, ignited a combination of intense inspiration and fury at the healthcare system. I went on to train with Dr Hampton and am now a certified Natural Fertility Educator - and will teach any woman wholl listen to me how to chart her cycle I have so much respect for this teacher who has been advocating for fertility awareness as a Womens Right issue her whole career. 22.01.2022 10 Things I Would Tell My 21-Year-Old Self This final week of the year is always a big one for me. I get Christmas, my birthday and New Years all rolled into one week. This year's changeover is particularly reflective for a lot of us with the new decade afoot. This morning I wrote a note to my 21 and 41-year-old self (a fav tradition). ... And I'd love to share some of what I'd share with younger self on what we'd learn this decade. 1. There are going to be many many endings, but just as many beginnings. Don't grieve for too long. 2. When it comes to love, you'll *know, really KNOW* when you know. But those other souls that you danced with in the meantime will teach you great secrets. 3. Work hard BUT! Not everything had to be earned by the sweat of your brow. Ease and simplicity are divine organising principles. 4. I know you're shy, but please allow yourself to be seen...it will get easier, trust me on that one. 5. Which reminds me, you can be so many things all at once. You can be strong and knowing, as well as vulnerable and shy. Both are true and real. 6. Don't worry, you're not crazy for speaking with plants. You'll soon find a community that does the same (and they also happen to like pot lucks, mountain adventures and general silliness....squeee, you're in for such a treat!). 7. When you finish your naturopathic training, go out there and just start practising. You'll never feel ready. The only way to learn your craft is practice. 8. When stressed or overwhelmed, get outside, drink motherwort tea and read desiderata daily. 9. Get good mentors, ask for help, investing in your education is always a good idea, and save 30% of everything you earn. 10. Get lots of sleep. You'll thank me. 22.01.2022 UTIs are one of the most frequent infections in women, accounting for nearly 25% of all infections experienced - thats high! Its estimated that around 5060% of women will develop a UTI in their lifetimes. They occur more more often in women than in men, at a ratio of 8:1. While antibiotics are often effective at clearing an acute infection, they leave women more vulnerable to recurring infections. It is estimated in the literature that 80% of all UTIs are reinfections,... thus having a robust prevention strategy is key or breaking the cycle! 21.01.2022 I recently completed Julia Camerons The Artists Way and I seem to be successfully crow-barring it into most conversations I have (As in: me offering to download the audio version onto my father in laws phone at Sunday lunch) simply because its such a deeply valuable thing to do as a human to tend to our creative self! One of the exercises that Ive found most enjoyable is to list 5-10 unlived lives and infuse a little of that life into the present. Its been so v...ery enriching and has restructured my days in delightful ways. Some of mine: 1. A Novelist: Do NaNoWrimo this year (Yay, mission complete! See my highlights ) and write for 30 minutes everyday going forward. 2. A doctor: Read one new study every day and do the WebMD quizzes. 3. A clairvoyant: All decisions are to be approved by intuition - from my choice of breakfast to my choice in accountant. 4. A tea master: Use the nice tea pot daily. Light a candle. Say a prayer. Pour slowly. Drink slowly. 5. A midwife: Teach people how to understand their fertility and trust in their body. Be with womxn. 6. A queen: Lead from the heart. Be kind. Be clear. Have a vision. Above all else serve your people and protect the vulnerable. Rinse and repeat. 7. An ecologist: use only and advocate for sustainable, ethically produced herbal medicines. Spread the word. Ive come to understand that creativity isnt about paint brushes, poems or songs - its about accessing the other 90% of ourselves and remixing our reality with the riches that await us there. 21.01.2022 Most peoples sexual education experience goes something like this: "As a woman, youll have a monthly bleed called a period. Youll need to use these types of hygiene products called pads and tampons. You can now get pregnant. Use condoms to avoid STIs. Use the pill to not get pregnantwith this, youll still have a monthly bleed which you can call a period. This is the responsible, mature thing to do." Were not taught that we can only get pregnant 20-25% of the ...time let alone how to identify when that is. Were not taught that within the menstrual cycle are different phases that each have unique gifts and signatures that when harnessed can leverage our creativity and productivity. Were also not taught that the pill shuts down all ovulation function nor that the bleeds are a medication withdrawal reactionnot a period. We can go through our entire lives never fully understanding what happens within our bodies every month. The beautiful thing is, its never too late to learn. 21.01.2022 The Alchemy of Hitting Rock Bottom // Sometimes a shake-up now and again invigorates our bodies, minds and souls. When the suffering, pain or stress all become unbearable, you know that youre being invited to grow. To change. To be reconfigured in a way that will better serve the world. . Like everything in nature, we are deeply connected with everything around us. The bushfires that have been ravaging Australia have stirred pain in us all. They will only catalyse cha...nge if we accept. . Ive come to see plants as my greatest, wisest mentors. We can learn a great deal from them. They are masters of resilience and adaptation. Their lives are at the whims of where their seeds are scattered. If they burn, they find ways to come back anew. They produce a host of plant chemicals to protect them from predators, from frost, the sun and other plants. . They work in a time dimension altogether different from our own. Plants operate slowly across long timelines. Many plants thrive from stressors, shocks and volatility. They adapt strengthened and better suited to thrive in their changing environment. . We are the same. We dont just tolerate shocks; we need them to grow. . So Im taking my cue from the plants: surrender to the change, allow nature to strengthen me in the way it needs and for good measure send a prayer that I here and willing to be on the transition team to a kinder, more whole and peaceful world. . It not only is in charge of extracting and absorbing all our nutrition from our food, its also heavily involved in your immunity, mood and hormone balance. One of the key components of your digestion is the population of bugs you have a very intimate working relationship with, commonly known as the microbiome. The microbiome contains 10^14 living microorganisms (In other words, 100,000,000,000,000) from over... 1000 different species that collectively weigh between 1-2kg. This is x10 the number of cells in the human body. We're composed of 90% microbial cells only 10% human cells! If you are serious about healing your digestive system, making this smoothie your beginning to the day is putting your best foot forward. The smoothie is a complete package of probiotics, prebiotics, anti-inflammatory compounds and gastrointestinal repair nutrients. I've prescribed this smoothie many a time, and find my patients love not only the effects but also the taste. In fact, when youre in environments that are challenging, but we have the skills and reserves to respond to the challenge, you can feel focused, motivated and experience a healthy tension. This is referred to as being in the flow or you zone or peak performance. If there was nothing to challenge you, you would likely feel bored and stagnant. Stress can catalyse significant transformations in your creativity, your ability to think of different sol...utions, positive psychological re-building and healing. The key is balancing periods of being entirely switched on and engaged with rest so that youre body, nervous and hormonal systems have the chance to switch gears into replenishing mode. If youre able to flow between the two modes, youre in a state of healthy equilibrium. Issues arise when youre unable to balance the two modes. 03.01.2022 My husband affectionately calls me "la sensitiva. . Sensitivity is something I speak about it a lot in my practiceas I seem to attract other fellow sensitives. If youre hanging around these parts, perhaps youre sensitive too? . It isnt a clinical diagnosis or disorder, rather a recognition that a subset of the population (15-20% of animals and humans) have inherited qualities that mean they receive and process stimulation in a different way.... . Its a way of being in the world. . Our nervous systems are more porous than others, and if not given enough time to process, integrate and reflect, things begin to get overwhelming and tiring. . I used to think that it was a thorn in my side for a long time (I shared some of my story on this earlier in the week), sometimes preferring to stay at home with my novels and watercolours rather than go to a party, but when I left school to study naturopathy, I began to see it as an asset...being able to pick up on the music between the words, see the details that unlock a new meaning and being able to relate and empathise. . It's a constant dance, and there are some days I so dearly wished I was an extrovert with thick skin and inexhaustible energy. . 02.01.2022 Prevention of UTIs. 1. Follow all the diet and lifestyle tips from this blog post. 2. Cranberry and D-mannose. Cranberry extract is easily found in health food stores and pharmacies. D-mannose is still not that well known yet in Australia. D-mannose is a naturally occurring compound that is very active at preventing the bacteria adhering to the bladder wall. I have found the combination to be superior to cranberry alone. Take (dosage) once daily and an additional dose aft...er intimacy (Howell, 2007.; Kranjec et al., 2014). 3. Probiotic -if you have had a recent round of antibiotics or suffer from other digestive issues such as bloating, diarrhea or constipation, taking a specific probiotic is very helpful. I recommend formulas that contain strains of Lactobacillus rhamnosus GR-1 and L. reuteri RC-14, as these are the strains that clinical studies have been performed on (Falagas et al., 2006). If youre a fermenting keen bean, empty a couple of these probiotic capsules of these into your next batch of yogurt culture and you'll be creating a UTI specific yogurt for yourself. Two such probiotics are Jarrow's FemDophilus or Blackmore's Women's Flora Balance. Take 1 capsule daily.
