25.01.2022 We moved here in 1993, Plovers have been ever present. Before we planted the vineyard I grew a fabulous cover crop of rye corn surrounding greenfeast peas. Our german shepherd Clyde found a nest amongst the rye corn which had a couple of young chicks in it. We were so thrilled to observe them and even carefully hold them. Harrison was 4 years old and it was a real treat for him. Many generations of plovers have grown since then and they are so protective of their eggs and yo...ung dive bombing myself and the dogs, luckily without success. Yesterday while pruning Ernie played his best to fend them off, their nest this year is amongst a growth of reed in the vines, sadly Ruby our Weimaraner ate one of the eggs. After being scolded by me I doubt she will do that again. Today the other eggs are gone, I suspect the parents have moved them to a more secure spot. See more

23.01.2022 The new Riesling vines were trimmed to leave a few buds earlier this week, with the new growth emerging and some nice Spring sunshine and warm days I hope they might grow to the wire by Christmas.

22.01.2022 Lovely sunny day for pruning in a Tee shirt which is a bit of a contrast to the last few weeks.

20.01.2022 I've posted this before but still reckon it's a good photo.

20.01.2022 Photo from last year I'm going to try to get another just like it on Thursday. Will post the result later.

20.01.2022 Clayfield Wines is proudly 100% Australian.

19.01.2022 Cellar door may be closed at the moment, but you can still purchase our Grampians Shiraz online. Please help us maintain our income through this challenging period. Notwithstanding many are experiencing financial constraints to assist Clayfield Wines is offering free delivery and a 25% discount on Massif Shiraz. Remember consuming wine in moderation has many health benefits, a relaxing glass or two enjoyed with a meal is good for the soul. In this time of hightened anxiety we... can all do with a bit of stress relief, considering there is no live footy to watch! Vintage update. We picked our grapes during the last week finishing on Tuesday. The yield was significantly down and although the vines were completely covered by netting Rosellas had a feast by hanging off the sides and pinching the fruit berry by berry. On a section of the vineyard we had double netted thereby stopping the birds access to the sides. Something I will invest in before 2021. In a usual year the kangaroos get under the nets and take fruit, for whatever reason this didn't happen this year? Reports from other vineyards say yields where down up to 50%, a reflection ot the attenuated flowering period and dry weather during summer. I haven't heard of any smoke taint in the Grampians or Pyrenees wine regions, the quality is excellent with very good acidity levels and plenty of colour in the Shiraz. 2020 will be remembered for several negative reasons, no AFL, no Olympics, terrible bushfires, Covid-19 pandemic, but there will be no doubting that it was a pretty good year for Grampians Shiraz. Cheers, Simon

19.01.2022 I have been covering the vineyard with the bird netting, finished it on the weekend. In a couple of places there are some wild briar rose plants which snag the nets. Cutting them out revealed a family of Ladybirds, before I could take the photo many scurried off there's at least 5 shown here. I counted at least 20 initially. Having used organic vineyard practices for 20 plus years now it is always pleasing to see beneficial insects in the vineyard.

13.01.2022 That time of year again.

13.01.2022 We had a wonderful surprise visit to cellar door this afternoon by Geoff and Gloria from the Australian Small Winemakers Show which was held in Stanthorpe recently. Such a thrill to find out that the 2012 and 2013 Clayfield Grampians Shirazes both received GOLD Awards. 100% success! It may be a small winemakers show but 171 wineries entered the show with 871 wines entered in total from all classes.

11.01.2022 Bird net rolling windlass Ron and I whipped up, just a couple of little things to finish.

10.01.2022 Picking some Shiraz this morning from a few rows of vigorous vines. The crop is pretty good in patches, but fairly light mostly.

10.01.2022 The years are roundabouts, pruning again. Just wondering where the vignerons timetable starts and ends. 2016 and 2017 wines to be bottled next month. Before we know it Spring will be along with budburst and the cycle repeats.

10.01.2022 We bottled 2016 and 2017 Shiraz in the last week, this is toward the end. Pretty Red!

08.01.2022 Clayfield Wines cellar door is now closed for wine tastings until further notice due to Covid 19. 07.01.2022 Clayfield Wines Cellar Door is closed until further notice. Besides the 'wog' going around it's also grape harvest and we have important vintage work to do. Our classic Grampians Shirazes are still available for purchase just give us a call, local deliveries are free. Sorry for any inconvenience.

05.01.2022 The vineyard is looking pretty good currently, I'm expecting to see the first tinges of colour in the berries soon. Typically around Australia Day we notice the first signs of veraison. Last Monday there was some strong wind gusts bringing this old gum tree down, it had been a bit rotten in the trunk so it was just a matter of time. The other photo is of an old huge gum tree still standing fortunately it will be a heart breaker when it finally succumbs to mother nature.

05.01.2022 Wonderful 25 mm of lovely rain overnight with more throughout today. The vineyard will love the drink!

03.01.2022 This week has been busy racking French oak hogsheads of 2017 Shiraz and blending for Black Label Grampians Shiraz, other barrels of French and American went into the Massif and Ton Up blends. The Black Label looks spectacular as is, the others are very good but may need some egg white fining. A fair proportion has been new oak some for 24 months.

02.01.2022 The cellar door is open again, of course we will be following social distancing and extra hygienic practices to reduce and prevent the spread of Covid-19. For the foreseeable future disposable wine tasting glass will be used. It is advisable that visitors should phone in advance. Clayfield Wines reserves the right to prohibit persons from entry to cellar door for health reasons.
