We cut our teeth on Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Status Quo, and many others, extended jams & a very very wild stage show with Michael Pope on bass, Mark McCallum on guitar & myself on drums and sharing lead vocal duties with Michael. These photos have only just resurfaced for me, the missing link of my early inspiration, talk about RAZED ON ROCK. Today's clipping is from the Smash Hits (most likely Australian Edition) and must have been published around October 1988, when the S/T debut album was released. The album was reviewed by David Nichols and what a review it is! "Kings Of The Sun debut LP comes as a bit of surprise I must say - partly because everyone thought they'd died in the "ass" after their moderately successful first single ("Bottom Of My Heart" in ...'86) and also because it shows such a rockin' good development from that early release." These were the days that no one had a phone/camera on them. You can certainly get an idea of what I talked about in the last post of how cramped we were at times. This was the very clip that was banned in the USA, on MTV in 1989 for ...apparently being too risqué! Our first album KINGS OF THE SUN was recorded in up state New York with Eddie Kramer at the wheel, he was full of life, seen at that time to be old hat. Jeff and I wanted that classic rock sound from the late 60's early 70's . This was done in Beartracks and Bearsville Studio's owned by Jannis Joplin and Bob Dylan's manager Albert Grossman up in Woodstock. So the album is full of that Woodstock magic, that fills the surrounding hills. Eddie Kramer would try and talk us into buying Ferraris if the album went gold. It was a stand in joke in between takes, the session was full of ping pong, Chinese food, plenty of laughter and Eddie's obsession with the album going GOLD, it by rights , should have. Jeff and I were always disappointed when we get an album with only 2-3 great songs. So we really set out to make every song great, no matter what the style. Triplet leading with the right hand on the 4 and bass drum playing the offbeat with a sped up inversion at the very end, whew. I love to play the triple time single strokes towards the end. The cowbell in the breakdown was for Gene Krupa, but Steve Tyler from Aerosmith told me it blew his mind when he heard that single shot, he said, "where you put that thing....man o man" , great compliment from an ex drummer. Thanks everyone for buying the album and loving it! KOTS FANS, thanks for your wonderful words, its great to know that people are still out there playing our music. The web has been a godsend for people to hear music that they unjustly couldn't get to. Now thanks to you guy's & gals, its all out there to be enjoyed, discovered and shared. Our music is world class, it will just take a while for people to catch up. Great music lives forever, it doesn't go away. The spirit, Jeff and I put into those songs has come through, thats what everyones hearing. Snare drum sounds are a tricky business - Especially with the 80's soundscapes ;) Many a potentially good song were slaughtered by over innovative 80's sound engineers... Luckily, that wasn't the case with any of our 3 KOTS albums - They're timeless feelgood machines! and what a fight it was to keep em like that. With the big brass and producers telling us in the 80's, that if we didn't bump up our sound we would sound old fashioned, which is what we wanted to sound, classic analogue valve recordings. Natural sound. It certainly was worth the fight! By Steve Newton I’d never heard of these guys before snagging a copy of their debut album, but I wouldn’t be surprised to hear plenty from them in the near future, because they’re good. Very good. And you’ll think so, too, if you crave the kind of slam-bang guitar rock with a southern edge that the Georgia Satellites serve up. Serpentine and Get On Up should be played on local rock radio as soon as possible. Do me a favour and request them, will you please?

09.01.2022 KOTS Memorabilia These can be found on eBay quite frequently for a buck or two. Part of ProSet SuperStars MusiCards trading card series released by Winterland Rock Express in 1991. KOTS card was #195 and accompanying text goes: "If you like your rock 'n roll hot and simple, infectious and satisfying, then this group is for you," says Winnipeg Free-Press critic Glen Gore-Smith about Kings Of The Sun, the Australian rock band formed during the mid-1980s by the Hoad brothers.... Then it lists the albums and band members, but they didn't avoid a small typo, spelling Anthony Ragg's surname as "Rogg." Till next time. Peter (co-admin)

07.01.2022 KOTS Clippings Chris Hornsblow sent these photos of an interview in JUKE No.712 dated to 17 December 1988. Apart from interesting information about the debut album recording and why produced Eddie Kramer was replaced by Dave Thoener during the mixing stage, interviewer Steven Walker did not avoid a faux pas. As you can notice, Clifford's name throughout the whole article (but one occasion) is stated as Colin. Maybe there was a third brother Colin Hoad? :-D Peter (co-admin)

Those with a keen eye noticed two KOTS singles on it: #10 Black Leather and #16 Serpentine. It's quite interesting, given Australian mainstream did not want to know about the band.
