12.01.2022 An important part of childhood development is learning from mistakes. Learning from mistakes not only challenges us to do things differently and to be innovative, it allows for the development of problem solving skills and fosters resilience and persistence. Parents can assist children to learn from mistakes by: * Reinforcing that they are not expected to be perfect * Acknowledging them when they admit their mistakes... * Refraining from consistently pointing out past mistakes * Modelling taking responsibility for mistakes and apologising * Reminding them that they are loved unconditionally * Praising effort * Avoiding the urge to rescue them from the mistakes they make See more

10.01.2022 Psychology For Kids is happy to confirm that the 2020 Federal Budget announcement has included significant changes to Medicare-funded psychology sessions across the country. It is thought that as early as Friday 9th October 2020, all Australians will have access to 20 Medicare-subsidised psychology sessions per calendar year, thus doubling the current Better Access sessions from 10 sessions per year. This initiative applies for an initial two year period. We anticipate that these changes will be welcomed by many of our existing clients. The team at Psychology For Kids will be sure to provide further information as soon as it becomes available.

10.01.2022 The long weekend is a great opportunity for children, adolescents and parents to refuel and engage in a little self-care. This post by Blessing Manifesting offers some great suggestions for self-care. Taking care of our emotional, mental and physical well-being is key to improving our mood and reducing anxiety.

08.01.2022 Self-regulation is the ability to understand and manage your own behaviour and emotional responses when faced with a tough situation. Essentially, it is about how the child processes information and emotions, and what they are capable of doing with that information. It is thought that children are better able to regulate their emotions when they experience warm and responsive relationships with their caregivers. Children can also learn through watching. Challenges with execu...tive function and sensory overload can make it difficult for children to self-regulate. Self-regulation skills develop gradually over a lifetime, however adults can provide support by assisting children in finding appropriate and adaptive ways of responding to strong emotions. This visual offers some basic ways adults can support children to develop skills in self-regulation. Please note that it is important to ensure that your expectations for behaviour match the child’s age and stage of development.

01.01.2022 The team at Psychology For Kids value and prioritise the health and wellbeing of all of our clients and staff. While the past few months have been not like anything any of us have experienced before, it has been a privilege to have been able to support so many of you during this challenging time. With restrictions continuing to ease and the community transmission of the virus staying relatively low, the month of July will see the Psychology For Kids practice partially re-ope...n for face-to-face appointments across our two locations. We would like to stress that this is a trial and will be for some treating clinicians, with some clients, on some days. As we are emerging from this period, we will NOT be opening to a maximum capacity. This is to ensure that we can adequately implement our new infection control procedures. As it currently stands under the Medicare legislation, Psychologists are able to continue to provide Telehealth sessions until September 30th 2020. This may possibly be extended. For the moment, we will be encouraging all clients and clinicians in the high risk categories and all those who have a preference for Telehealth sessions to continue treatment in this way. All those who are considered low risk and have a preference for face-to-face appointments will be invited to return to face-to-face sessions in our rooms. Others may opt for a mix of Telehealth and face-to-face sessions. If you have considered your options and decide to return to face-to-face treatment, please understand that there will be changes made to procedures. These changes will be emailed out to all clients. For those clients who were bulk billed for Telehealth sessions due to Medicare legislation or for other reasons, please note that face-to-face sessions will no longer be bulk billed, and the full fee will be charged. For those clients with appointments already scheduled in for July, the mode of treatment that was discussed at the time of making the booking will stand. Please note that if rates of community transmission rise significantly, clinicians will return to providing treatment via Telehealth. We thank you for your patience and we welcome any questions you may have. Please do not hesitate to forward questions or concerns to [email protected] The team at Psychology For Kids look forward to seeing you soon.
