19.01.2022 This story has been researched by Shirley Powley and is relevant to Anzac Day. Shirley has done an enormous amount of research and we hope to share more of her stories on this site, These three soldiers whose names are on the WW1 panel of the Cloncurry War Memorial, all died on 20th September 1917 JAMES McNAMARA (25th Battalion) James McNamara was born at Bourke, NSW. He was working in the Cloncurry area as a miner when he enlisted. His Will stated that he wished to make his ...step-brother, Frank Davis, Longreach, his beneficiary. Although Frank Davis appears to have been a Carrier in the Winton district, living at the Winton Hotel from about 1913 until at least 1925, letters to him from the Army authorities and solicitors (in 1921) remained unanswered. A letter to Donald R. McDonald, chosen as his Next of Kin when he enlisted, and sent to Kalkadoon, was re addressed to him at Vergamont Station, Longreach. He replied that he was not aware that James had any relatives alive.; THOMAS NOLAN (9th Battalion) was born at Ballarat, Victoria. He worked at mining and apparently having no family in Queensland, gave as his next-of- kin, Mr.George Mowatt, the owner of a mine at Mt. Cuthbert probably his employer. In late February or early May,1917, George Mowatt died in the Cloncurry hospital, and so letters to him from the Army authorities, regarding the death in action of Thomas Nolan in the following September, remained unanswered Like his friend, Thomas Nolan, George Mowat also lies in an unmarked grave - in the Cloncurry Cemetery. It is most likely that the Medals due to James and Thomas were classed as Untraceables and possibly destroyed. GEORGE OLUF TOWNSEND (9th Battalion) was born at Charters Towers but his family were at Kuridala during the war years. From newspaper articles, he played local cricket and was a successful bowler. The 9th was allocated to the Polygon Wood-Nonne Bosschen sector, and was committed on the 20th. (September 1917) It was relieved on the night of the 21st after having suffered 35 killed, 149 wounded, and 56 missing. In this battle the Australians lost 5,000 in two Divisions, and the British casualties were between 20,000 and 25,000. 16.01.2022 Congratulations to Gail, our current Treasurer, who has been an active member of the Historical Society since its formation in 1985. It is worth noting that Wayne Tapp was also a founding member and is still actively involved in the Society. Wayne and Gail have been recognised in the past for their voluntary contribution to various organisations in the Cloncurry Australia Day awards. Their passion for the preservation of Cloncurry history has been recognised and is very well deserved.

07.01.2022 To commemorate the 30th anniversary of the first newsletter produced by the Historical Society we have attached the first copy on our Facebook page. These early newsletters were created without the access to the internet for research, when pictures had to be added from actual photos and the text had to be done on a typewriter. We pay homage to the dedicated members who volunteered their time to preserve the history of Cloncurry district and we will be adding more stories from these newsletters on this page. Double click to see the full page.
