24.01.2022 This evidence floored me WAM being paid $10k to not attend the Koori Knockout. This fee was paid so Aboriginal clubs weren’t fined individually for using the flag as an emblem and symbol of pride on their uniforms . Also, if you want a deeper discussion about the flag then make sure you join the New Aboriginal Flag or Flags Discussion Facebook group. #FreeTheFlag ... 21.01.2022 Unfortunately, atm the Aboriginal Flag is not a symbol of Aboriginal unity and identity. Can’t believe the Australian Government in the middle of a senate inquiry into the Aboriginal flag copyright disaster releases this commemorative coin. Wish we could be excited about this historical moment and the flag’s 50th birthday but, the flag is not free and Aboriginal people are in despair... we also wonder who is profiting of this?! Is it time to boycott the Aboriginal flag? #FreeTheFlag #PrideNotProfit #FlagEquity #PeoplePower Dreamtime Kullilla-Art Nova Peris OAM

18.01.2022 Mr Patten said while the flag served its purpose in the fight for justice and land rights, he felt that it had often taken away from the complex differences between traditional owner groups across the country. "This debate has put these things into perspective and made me think about how I actually belong to a mob and different countries the flag was only something that was adopted in the 70s whereas Aboriginal culture has been around for millennia," Mr Dixon Patten said.... Aside from the obvious flag issue, is it time for clan based flags and or symbology that empowers our community and ensures that people recognise, pay attention and learn about their regions history too. 01.01.2022 Aborginal orgs STILL have to pay to use the Flag despite Harold’s wishes. Thanks to Victorian Aboriginal Health Service -VAHS for sharing their experience of this complex copyright issue. VAHS CEO, Mick Graham told the inquiry that VAHS’s health promotions manager contacted Harold Thomas in 2019 to seek permission to use the symbol.... Graham read the contents of an email he said was from Thomas: Aboriginal medical and legal services have always used and promoted the Aboriginal flag from the very beginning, and we are grateful. Because of recent events some people have been reckless to say the least. I suggest contacting WAM and say that we have spoken. The issue will be amicable. I support you 100 percent. Your friend, brother and member of a beautiful great race. Graham said that when contacted, WAM asked for a copy of the email and, in a subsequent phone conversation, said they had looked into VAHS financial records online and said financially we were viable to pay a fee, and also they could offer a discount, but we would still have to pay. I refused. Thomas’ rights as the designer and artist should be fully respected in any negotiations the federal government undertook to potentially buy the flag licensing and copyright, Graham said.
