24.01.2022 Awesome Uniting Barwon Volunteer Peter Wheeler is one of 6 finalists in the Westfield Local Heroes awards with the chance to win a grant of $10,000 for Uniting Barwon Norlane. Peter needs your vote! Despite having his own personal battles within in his own family, major mental health problems and other, all hugely exacerbated by Covid 19, Peter still found the time to engage in this brilliant effort and would appreciate your support. Please forward this email and link to your... network of family, friends, colleagues and neighbours and share on your social media channels. To vote for Peter, please click on this link: https://surveys.reputation.com/surveys3/run Given that we may not be too far away from operating again, perhaps earlier than the rest of Victoria, a win for Peter would be a huge support for the community programs listed. This would be an awesome time for the Norlane and Corio community to come back together and re-engage in activities for the benefit of all. Volunteer Peter Wheeler has created an Op Shop and community space that offers much more than second-hand clothes and household goods. With his vision and drive, Uniting Barwons new Norlane Op Shop is also a safe place for disaffected locals to socialise and seek help: Comfy sofas where any members of the community can read a book, have a chat, relax and enjoy a cuppa Kids corner with toys, books and puzzles Volunteering opportunities Community arts program and literacy and numeracy programs Conversational English for new arrivals in conjunction with Diversitat Messy Mums group - an evening program for parents and kids Evening wellness program - some yoga and relaxation Community internet caf Vegie garden supporting provision of free light lunches from our approved kitchen Community engagement events, including community movie nights and regular car boot sales with sausage sizzles. Any profit made from the shop goes to our Emergency Relief Program for those in greatest need in our community. Voting closes on 14 September. Thank you for your vote!

15.01.2022 Authentic Thai Grilled Chicken (Kai yang) Recipe For the marinade 1 tablespoon palm sugar... 4 tablespoons soy sauce 1 tablespoon fish sauce 1 tablespoon palm sugar 1 tablespoon dark sweet soy sauce 4 tablespoons water 2 heads garlic (15 20 cloves) 1 stalk lemongrass 1.5 tablespoons black peppercorns 4 coriander roots (optional, but highly recommended if you can find them, you can also try the powder version Ive never tried it, but I think it would work) Thai grilled chicken sauce Keep in mind that for all these sauce ingredients, you may need to do some taste testing as you add ingredients these are not exact amounts. 1.5 tablespoons toasted rice powder 1.5 tablespoons chilli flakes 1 tablespoon sugar 3 tablespoons fish sauce 8 tablespoons tamarind watered down (about this amount, but you can add more or less depending on your taste) Few sprig onion for garnish. Green Papaya Salad (Som-tam) recipe 5 Cherry Tomatoes 2 chilli peppers 1 tablespoon dried shrimp 1 1/2 tablespoons fish sauce 1 clove garlic 6 green beans 2 cups shredded green papaya or you can use carrot 3/4 lime 1 1/2 tablespoons Palm Sugar Hot fresh sticky rice recipe 1 cup sticky rice The Microwave Method: Soak the sticky rice for 10 minutes in warm water in a bowl. Soaking the rice is very important. I have tried this method without soaking the rice first and it was disastrous. The rice was undercooked and inedible. The water level should be just above the rice, which comes out to be 1 cup of rice and a little over 1 cup of water (about 10% more). I recommend using a non-plastic container because you may melt the plastic in the microwave. Cover the bowl with a dish and cook in microwave for at full power 3 minutes. Stir the rice around to move the rice from the top to the bottom. You will notice that some of the rice is translucent or cooked and some still has white center or the uncooked portion. Heat it up again for another 3 minutes. Check and see if it is done. When cooked, all the rice should be translucent. If it needs more cooking, I recommend heating up and checking every 3 minutes or so. How long it takes to cook really depends on your microwave.

11.01.2022 As we head towards the Christmas break I want to take a moment to say thank you to my team for keeping going despite COVID. Our sector did an amazing job! As a global community we have all experienced a significant trauma. It has touched each of us differently but no one was spared. Our experiences may have impacted us differently but please do not compare or try to rationalise how each other is coping. Let this be a unifying realisation, a time to come together, to heal, re...flect and restore. We will be taking a break from Dec 19, re-opening on Jan 18, 2021. This time to take a break is important for my team to be ready for an awesome 2021. It will be a total break with the centre closing so we can each spend time out and switch off. We are excited to bring a range of familiar and new programs to you all in the new year. Warmest regards, Liz Centre Manager

01.01.2022 Today is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women - and the first day of the 16 Days of Activism. Violence against women is the resul...t of longstanding inequalities and disrespectful attitudes towards women in every day life. Sometimes it's overt. But more times than not, it's so subtle or ingrained, we do it ourselves without even questioning it. Over the next 16 days, in our Facebook and Instagram stories, we'll be sharing 16 ways each of us can do our bit to move attitudes forward in our communities, with a series of graphics developed by Women's Health in the North. Please share them! #16DaysOfActivism
