25.01.2022 Council adopts Fred Caterson Reserve Master Plan and Welcomes Eastwood Rugby Club to The Hills Council has adopted the Master Plan to set out the vision for Fred Caterson Reserve for the next 30 years. Fred Caterson Reserve is the premier sporting and recreation venue in The Hills. It is the oldest public reserve in our shire and one of Australia’s oldest reserves dating back to the 1860’s. Fred Caterson Reserve is also the premier Hills sporting location for Baseball, ...Basketball, BMX, Tennis and in the near future, Rugby Union. Fred Caterson Reserve is very special, but it has challenges in terms of access, parking, accessibility, signage and dated facilities. Additionally the reserve will need to cater for 22,000 extra Hills residents in the Showground precinct in the future. The adopted Fred Caterson Reserve Master Plan addresses the challenges with More facilities: 3 new rugby fields, 5 new tennis courts, expanded junior sporting fields, expanded baseball field and an upgraded BMX permeable track Greater access: A second road entrance off Gilbert Road, footpath and cycleway entrances, a pedestrian bridge over Showground Road and more shared paths within park Increased carparking: Additional car parks at the rugby union area, BMX facilities and Soccer/cricket fields. Increased amenities: New playgrounds, building upgrades and spectator areas throughout the precinct Better Signage: Premier signage on Gilbert Road and Showground Road The Master Plan is a visionary document which will be implemented over the next few decades. Future costs to Council associated with master-planned outcomes are subject to appropriate reports to Council. Alongside the plan adoption, a Memorandum of Understanding is to be signed with Eastwood District Rugby Union Football Club to be the anchor tenant and help deliver the Rugby Union section of the Fred Caterson Reserve Master Plan. It is very exciting to see another elite sporting organisation increase operations in The Hills and we look forward to working with Eastwood into the future.

04.01.2022 Have your say on the Turon Avenue Playground Upgrade in Baulkham Hills Council is upgrading the playground at Turon Avenue Reserve, Baulkham Hills. The proposed playground has been designed in accordance with Councils’ Recreation Strategy, 2019, for a local-suburban level park and will feature a range of informal recreation opportunities including: A playground catering for a wide range of ages and abilities Gathering and picnic areas including park furniture... A turf kick-about area Concrete pathway linking to the existing pathway network as well as a pathway leading to the corner of Turon Avenue and Lisgar Avenue (where funding permits) Shade sails to playground area Selected areas of post and rail fencing Planting of trees and native plant species As part of the playground upgrade, Council is proposing to relocate the playground area from its current location to the area south of Lisgar Avenue, as shown in the below plan. This will allow the new playground to be located on flatter ground, making it more accessible for people of all abilities. The playground will also be located in proximity to other park facilities such as the BMX track which is currently being upgraded. Please have your say on the proposed plan by 4pm on Friday the 18th of December through Council's website https://www.thehills.nsw.gov.au//Have-Your-Say-on-Turon-Av Following the completion of the community consultation process, Council will review feedback received and incorporate the ideas into the detail design process. Construction works are anticipated to commence later this financial year.
01.01.2022 15Z Nelson Road Site to be sold, a new Box Hill Nelson Community Centre to be built The 15Z Nelson Road site that houses the Box Hill Nelson Community Centre will be sold by Council and a new Community Centre will be built across the road at the upcoming Anthony Skarratt Reserve. The current Box Hill and Nelson Community Centre is a very special place with an incredible history. The 1 acre of land was donated to the Box Hill Nelson Progress Association by Anthony Skarratt ...70 years ago. The Nissan Hut was purchased and transported to the current site by Progress Association. The Progress Association fundraised for years to pay back the cost of the hall and maintained the facility for decades. The hall has hosted countless large events, progress meetings, Christmas partings and even ordinary meetings of Council. For 70 years the hall has been the centre of the community in Box Hill and Nelson. However Box Hill will house 40,000 residents when it is fully developed, and a larger contemporary community centre is needed to service the population. The Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal (IPART) deem any new Community Centres as ‘non-essential works’ and therefore they are not able to be included by Council in the Box Hill Contribution Plan. Therefore the sale of this land is required to fund part of any new community centre in Box Hill. Councillors have consulted widely with the community to ensure that the history of the hall is maintained and that Box Hill and Nelson get the best possible outcome from the sale. As part of the resolutions of Council All money from the sale of the land is being held in an internal reserve for exclusive use towards the new Community Hall in Box Hill. The new hall will be over twice the value of the current hall and land $358,862 has been allocated to fast track the planning and design work of the new reserve and hall A community exhibition will occur in the near future proposing that the reserve that the hall stands upon be called Anthony Skarratt Reserve The new hall will be called the Box Hill and Nelson Community Centre Council staff have also been directed to Work with the proponent to maintain access to the existing hall for as long as possible Review landholdings in Box Hill and surrounding areas to offer alternate venues to existing tenants including the progress association, dance classes and shows Ensure that the history of the current hall and progress association is to be maintained in the new facility A further report is being tabled to Council in 3 months detailing progress on all of the seven items listed above. I believe the motion of Council is a large step forward for the future of the Box Hill and Nelson and that the new facility will form a new centre of focus for the community in the decades to come.
