22.01.2022 The Retreat can truly be said to be blossoming and bursting with life ...

22.01.2022 Petana Gardens is holding their 4th annual 'Sculpture at Petana' exhibition from 10 - 18 October, 10am to 4pm daily. This is an exhibition of over 60 Sculptures created by 26 South coast artist, all on show around the beautiful, park-like gardens. Petana Gardens is on Woodburn Road in Morton and is well worth a visit not just for all the interesting sculptural work and also, for the rather nice food! 408b Woodburn Rd, Morton 2538, Mob: 0416 173 214

20.01.2022 Some good news to report ... Mt Bushwalker is shown as open on the NSW National Parks website. Also Mt Rushdon. Mt Bushwalker, in particular is a lovely walk. If you want to do these walks, double check on the Nat Parks website as weather and/or other factors may dictate whether the park remains open or not. For Pigeon House, we are still waiting and trying to interpret what the NPWS are saying about it!

20.01.2022 I just have to share this Passiflora Herbatiana with anyone who cares to take a peak at this site. Just so space-age, wacky-exotic, though apparently the most common Passiflora on the South Coast. Two of them that I am aware of ... each side of the slope from our house.

19.01.2022 No question that Spring has arrived - the birds are saying so too.

16.01.2022 Update on the 'phone situation ... There is no update ... :$ Sorry!

16.01.2022 How is this for Super Cool ... A Xanthorrhoea Concava, (Grass Tree), in Flower at the front gate ...

16.01.2022 We have a couple of cameras about half way up the river bank, recording the wildlife there for the Land for Wildlife scheme. They are well away from the main area that people visit and there are a couple of white lures on the ground that will indicate to you that you are near a camera. However, the river is flooding today, so one of them will definitely be under water ... and we are rather hoping it might record our platypus ..!

15.01.2022 A few more pics to show what your missing by not being here!!

12.01.2022 Last weekend gave us that distinct feeling of 'Oh no, not again' ... as we watched the Clyde River rising faster than an Elon Musk rocket. The Brooman river height data showed the water rising vertically on Saturday, so we advised all our guests, (every house was occupied), that they should pack up and leave before they were trapped here for an indefinite period. We also packed bags in case we couldn't get back and led a procession of cars out to Monkey Mountain Road, from w...hich spot they could all comfortably go their separate ways. We turned around and picked our way back home, managing to get back in but since then (today is Monday) we have been unable to get out again. The Clyde River is on its way down now having burst its banks yesterday, for the second time this year - it reached higher than two weeks ago but less high than in February - but it will be a few days before we can expect to get out. Such interesting times we are having ... All the guests were kind enough to give us excellent reviews :) See more

12.01.2022 The fellow who works for the Community Environment Network which runs the Land for Wildlife programme, came yesterday to spend a day helping us to remove weeds that have arrived on our property as a result of the fires. I am pleased to report that while there are some fair few weeds there, such as thistle and ink weed, he found that there was very little given the size of our land, and that they were in quite specific areas and therefore able to be controlled reasonably easily. He also reported that our land was in extremely good condition which is excellent news in itself but it also indicates that as the wildlife recovers we will be able to provide that wildlife with habitat and food on which they can thrive.

11.01.2022 Just want to say to Sarah and Moya Thomas and Loren Mckenzie - thanks for your appreciative comments, we are indeed Absolutely Fabulous!! I should let you know, though, the Pigeon House Mountain is not currently open for bushwalking. Mt Bushwalker is and that isn't far from us and is a beautiful walk ...

10.01.2022 Well now, if anyone thinks they would like to visit us but is for some unknown reason, resisting temptation ... allow me to tempt you with these beautiful cooling shots of the river ...

10.01.2022 Time to post some new photographs I think, because we are just bursting with new life ...

10.01.2022 A year ago today, the fires came to our beautiful Retreat. Today we are rich with greenery and the double drummer cicadas are singing the sound of a summer full of life ...

09.01.2022 I have had some fun today on the NSW Native Plant Identification website - a great place for ignoramuses like me you have a large piece of land covered in flora and fauna that they know nothing about. We have had a Retreat bursting with Patersonia lately - also called Purple Flag - but we have had two different types and the debate has been extensive and thorough as to which are which. I put up a drawing to see if that helped but I'm not sure it did. Anyway, the answer is: Short, dark and hairy = Patersonia Sericea; a lighter shade of pale and taller = Patersonia Longifolia. And here they are, starting with the drawing and ending with a photograph showing one of each ...

08.01.2022 Frogs in the creek - if you have this many happy frogs, then something is going right ... right?!

07.01.2022 I am incredibly happy today as I heard a sound that I really thought I might not hear this year ... the sound of the rare Glossy Black Cockatoos munching contentedly on Casuarina nuts and calling to one another. Awful photos with a Canon Sureshot so apologies but here they are!! Last year we had 4, the year before 3 and I am hoping that the two here have the other two in tow somewhere around the place. Such a relief after the fires when we lost so many of their favourite trees.

06.01.2022 Just had a big Spring clean and shampoo of the soft furnishings at Carisbrook Lodge - a very busy house that has the capacity to sleep 8 people. We have also replaced all our bed covers with rather classy new ones ...

06.01.2022 We really are bursting with flowers at present - like an amateur arboretum ...

03.01.2022 Those of you who follow this page who have also stayed at our Retreat may have noticed that there is quite a bit of art littering the walls. Well, most of it is mine ... unsold or never offered for sale. Recently an interesting International Print Mail Art Project 2021 popped up in my emails, (I am a fine art print maker) and I thought I would have a go ... The project is themed: 'See things in perspective'. Here is a first print off the postcard sized lino-plate I cut, title: 'Since the Fires, we have had a great view of the Mountain'. I need to purchase the correct weight and size paper for the edition but the first pull looks OK I think.

02.01.2022 Lets try that one again ... Update on the 'phone situation ... Today: we have our 'phone working; Tomorrow: Who knows what tomorrow will bring ... But I am hopeful.... :) See more

02.01.2022 Great News ... we have our bridges back! The Retreat lies between two bridges on Carisbrook Road and both have been looking a little, lets say 'tatty', since the fires and the floods. The bridge over Carisbrook creek was in especially bad condition with barely enough width for a standard vehicle to pass over it. Now, however they are Good As News. Many thanks to the Forestry Commission for fixing them up, at last ...

01.01.2022 Sorry to say that we are, yet again, 'phoneless. Some outage, somewhere and hopefully it will be back on before too many days have gone by. Shall 'Post' as soon as we are back on.
