25.01.2022 IS THE TECHNOLOGY AVAILABLE TO ASSIST WITH THIS SCENARIO? When your medical team are faced with a patient presenting with tightness of chest and shortness of breath, in a remote area Do they: 1. Ensure the patient is on the next commercial flight leaving site? 2. Rely on a qualitative test to make a decision?... 3. Take a chance and keep the patient on site under observation? OR 4. Call the RFDS in to attend to the patient who appears to have severe chest pain? These are not trick questions but ones that could present at any time See more

22.01.2022 IS THE TECHNOLOGY AVAILABLE TO ASSIST WITH THIS SCENARIO? If a patient is displaying signs of a heart attack and you only have a qualitative determination can you afford to put the patient on the next commercial flight off site? What if you do and the patient experiences advanced stages of a heart attack during flight? If you rely on a qualitative test to make decisions How will you really know how far advanced the myocardial infarction really is?... If you take a chance and keep the patient under observation on site and the situation worsens. Your opinions are now limited to the RFDS, and what if the service is unavailable at the time? If you call in the RFDS in the first instance of chest pain the implications may be far reaching. Calling in the RFDS without a more qualified diagnosis may well mean you are diverting the RFDS from more serious situations. See more

19.01.2022 IS THE TECHNOLOGY AVAILABLE TO ASSIST WITH THIS SCENARIO? If a worker on a remote mine site is struggling to breath or who has a lung related issue, as part of the medical team how do you respond? How do you accurately diagnose lung and breathing problems? How do you check to see if treatments for a lung condition are working? How do you determine if the worker has a ruptured blood vessel, metabolic disease or chemical poisoning?... These are not trick questions but very real possibilities that you may be faced with. See more

19.01.2022 IS THE TECHNOLOGY AVAILABLE TO ASSIST WITH THIS SCENARIO? If a female is badly injured, unconscious and requires medication and treatment at a remote location Do you 1. Assume the patient is not pregnant and proceed with treatment? 2. Refrain from administering certain medications just in case the patient is pregnant?... 3. Risk lengthy delays whilst other time consuming assessments are implemented? Once again these are not trick questions but very serious ones that could present at any time See more

18.01.2022 Did you know? Labour Day is an annual public holiday that celebrates the eight-hour working day, a victory for workers in the mid-late 19th century. In the early 19th century, most labourers worked 10- or 12-hour days for six days each week. The 1850s brought a strong push for better conditions. On 21 April 1856, in Melbourne, the stonemasons workers staged a well-organised protest. They downed tools and walked to Parliament House with other members of the building trade. Th...eir fight was for an eight-hour day, effectively a 48-hour week to replace the 60-hour week. The government agreed to an eight-hour day for workers employed on public works, with no loss of pay. Tinsmiths, bootmakers, tailors, metal workers and stonemasons were amongst many of workers groups that protested and fought for better working conditions across the country. Over the next two decades, one by one, the states brought in the eight-hour-day although the working week was still officially six days until 1948 when it was changed to five days. 07.01.2022 Well - this doesn't happen very often - Happy Leap Year. Here's some fun facts for you: The rules for determining a leap year:... 1. Most years that can be divided evenly by 4 are leap years, with the exception of Century years -they are NOT leap years UNLESS they can be evenly divided by 400. 2. The Egyptians were the first to come up with the idea of adding a leap day once every four years to keep the calendar in sync with the solar year. Later, the Romans adopted this solution for their calendar, and they became the first to designate February 29 as the leap day. 3. A leapling is a person born on a leap day 4. Once upon a time, long ago, Leap Day was known as Ladies Day or Ladies Privilege, as it was the one day when women were free to propose to men. So armed with these tidbits you can amaze your friends with your knowledge! Enjoy.
