14.01.2022 Did anyone else just see the 'Arts' segment on 7.30? Am I stupid, did I miss the point... ?HOW could that segment have done anything to HELP the arts industry today. It was so oblique, to my mind, that it fell over. Your thoughts?

13.01.2022 A child's first experience of 'Theatre' in Australia is likely to be a role in the public school 'Nativity Play', but why stop there? Here in the Southern Highlands we offer too little for our younger audiences, but at the same time the drama departments of most of the secondary schools are vibrant, active, challenging places. These secondary students have no access to professional theatre unless they are taken 'out of area'. Ben Quilty has spoken of the need for young people to access visual art... but surely the same rule MUST be applied to the performing arts as well?

09.01.2022 "The Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Communications: a merger of the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Cities and Regional Development and Department of Communications and the Arts." The Arts no longer have a face or voice of their own, subsumed into waffledy-speak. Disgraceful.

08.01.2022 Hey wow - this looks super interesting! We’ve just been told about BLANK, a totally different and unique approach to live theatre. Get this..the lead actor doe...sn’t see the script until just before they walk on stage (wow!) and the script actually has heaps of blank spaces which the audience help to fill! It’s interactive without the cheese, engaging without feeling like you’re in a pantomime and such a cool way to break down the ‘wall’ between the stage and the audience. Different, right? Oh, and it’s being held in the awesome Round Yard at Retford Park. So unique we love it!!

08.01.2022 Have you got your tickets yet to this incredible performance? Blank is on this Thursday and Friday evening at Retford Park with tickets still available online for both nights. It really will be like nothing you've every seen before - it will make you rethink everything you ever knew about storytelling and theatre. We can't wait! We have sadly had to cancel the Saturday performance due to circumstances out of our control (all of the ticket holders have been notified). Thursday... and Friday performances are still on as planned! You can still buy your tickets online if you haven't already.

05.01.2022 Council must find $170K before the FIRST stage of restoration work can begin on the Mittagong Playhouse. (First stage is the 'deconstruction') No figure has been put on the full restoration, which does not include any extension or improvements. Time-frame out to 18 months plus.... Hopefully a NEW COUNCIL, with a better attitude towards The Arts, and performance in particular, will bring some ambitious thinking to bear from September 2020. Do let me have your thoughts, please.

03.01.2022 Buildings CAN be re-purposed. Look at the way the Performing Arts Centre in Cessnock sits in the middle of two iconic, early 20th century buildings. I'm not necessarily advocating for something like this to happen at the Mittagong Playhouse, but it is important to recognise that buildings need to grow and change to meet current needs, as well as acknowledge their heritage.

01.01.2022 MITTAGONG PLAYHOUSE CLOSED. WSC has closed the Playhouse, with immediate effect, and until further notice, due to roof defects. We at CMS Productions send love to all colleagues at HTG who were due to open ANNE OF GREEN GABLES tomorrow night. All that hard work in preparation and rehearsal, all that anticipation and excitement, all those enthusiastic audiences... all disappointed. This is not a situation that has developed overnight, or in the last month! What is our Council doing? Their neglect of the 'performing arts' is now becoming insulting and I ask anyone who reads this to become acquainted with the facts, and to join/subscribe to Highlands Theatre Group, CMS Productions, Furey Theatre Company, SHYAC or Pigs Fly Productions and show your support for the work we do in the community.
