A time when loneliness and isolation is truer and more real than it has ever been."

19.01.2022 15/09/20 In March this year, pre Covid-19, Beau Donelly and I travelled to Uganda to report on the crisis facing children living with intellectual and physical disability. For all its progress, Uganda’s record of supporting people with disabilities is abysmal. There are an estimated 6 million persons living with a disability. There is a severe lack of awareness of cognitive and developmental disabilities, which have not been included in developmental or government programming.... Disabled children, especially, are seen as a burden. So-called mercy killings are an accepted part of life in some rural areas. The families of disabled children are largely unsupported by their community and the government. Without access to education or information, the public are forced to rely on a deeply rooted cultural misconception that labels these disabilities a ‘curse’ or ‘possession’. And children are still hidden, locked and tethered inside, vulnerable to extreme forms of abuse and death. https://interactive.aljazeera.com//uganda-hidde/index.html Big thanks to the team at Al Jazeera English. @AAbuJ @haddadme @AliaChughtai Please take the time to read on a larger screen than a phone. Please share. Photographs Christopher Hopkins 2020 Lugonjo, Uganda. Salma Kobusinge - lives with intellectual impairments, believed to be Autism. Not medically trained, traditional birth attendants are an important part of the health system for pregnant women, particularly in isolated areas where access to a doctor is logistically and financially difficult. 09.01.2022 22/01/21 Street Concert 1 :: This image of concert cellist Josie Vains performing a street concert for neighbours during lockdown is part of an online exhibition curated by the Victoria State Archive :: It's been a year of major disruption, of dealing with change and showing our resilience. For this exhibition, local street photographers, documentarians and photojournalists have captured the moments of kindness, creativity, hardship and surreal-ness that defined 2020 in Victo...ria. Alongside these contemporary images, photographs drawn from the collections of the Victorian State Government and National Archives of Australia explore the concept of A new normal further. We look at change in our past, both negative and positive, and reflect on historic images that draw comparisons to what we've experienced these past twelve months :: 31 March 2020, 17:41 pm. Former Melbourne Symphony Orchestra Cellist, Josephine Vains plays a social distancing ‘concert’ for her neighbourhood. Like many artists hit hard by the lockdown, Josephine had to be creative in order to continue performing, so began to play impromptu concerts on the pavement outside her house in Brunswick. As Josie’s neighbours received notifications via WhatsApp, they would enjoy the beauty of music and escape the anxiety caused by the lockdown, whilst socially distancing for 30 minutes. Throughout 2020, random acts of kindness and togetherness arose within the community. As the unemployment rate rose and Australia entered a recession, community spirit, and acts such as Josie’s, proved to be vitally important for society’s psychological well-being. 01.01.2022 03/05/20 This image of ‘Lawrence’ from my 2015 series Living in the Shadow:Trauma, is being shown as part of Head On Photo Festival online exhibition - ‘Paper Tigers’. A collection of images from Australian photojournalists. To view and hear the panel discussion go to https://www.headon.com.au/civicrm/event/info?reset=1&id=164 Nakivale, Uganda. Lawrence, a Rwandan Hutu, in his home in the refugee settlement of Nakivale, South-West Uganda. After the Rwandan genocide in 1994... the Tutsi minority turned the table on their persecutors and began their revenge against the Hutu. As a result Lawrence fled to neighboring Tanzania. He returned in 1996, only to be imprisoned. Released seven years later, he returned to his wife and two children, and three days later they had their home burned down as they slept. As he tried to escape, the molten plastic tarpaulin used as roofing, collapsed onto his back. He suffered third-degree burns to his back and arms and spent four months in hospital. His wife and children were killed in the attack. His arms do not straighten at the elbows and shaking hands is an effort. He cannot manage a smile. Whilst forgiving his attackers, Lawrence struggles with what has happened and his circumstances now. Whatever pain I have I got I got from my country, I can return to my country but I will still have the pain; I stay here; I still have the pain. My life is not good at all, for two days I have not eaten because I cannot work. When I see my children praying for food beside me, I feel so sad. See more
