17.01.2022 Its a sad situation when guidelines have to be given to parents and adults who cant control or behave themselves at their kids sports events. But heres the ...root of the problem, and I wrote about it in my first book 7 keys to being a great coach, it all starts with standards, or rules if you like. The problem is, is that the coaches, directors, administrators of the sports programs talk about it, but dont lay down the rules and enforce them well enough. This is a grey area, and when there is a grey area, then it will be taken advantage of. Another issue, and this especially occurs more often in privatized, wealthier or entitled schools, is that parents feel they have the right to break the rules, due to either being high financial donators or influential people to the program, etc. Entitlement if you like. Fact is, when you set your standards and you fiercely enforce them, these issues are less frequent. Many might set standards and even put up signs, but unfortunately these standards arent enforced, and there are no consequences and thats when you let the inmates run the jail. 15.01.2022 This shows how good watching tennis is from behind the player. Good reminder as coaches to demonstrate shots and rallies from this point of view so they can feel like its them hitting.

12.01.2022 Have you ever noticed when you go to your childs soccer game that you react one way to bad calls, aggressive fouls, or intense situations in your game, but hav...e little or no reaction to similar situations in the game prior to yours, where you have no emotional stake? Do you can sit there with a neutral demeanor while your child warms up, watching two teams hack each other to pieces, and the referee turn a blind eye, yet feel nothing? But once your childs game kicks off, do you feel your emotions rise, the tension heighten, and everything change? If your answer is yes, then you are perfectly normal. Nearly every parent, player and coach goes through these same emotions. Science tells us why: mirror processing. In the 1990s, Italian researchers stumbled upon a class of neurons in the brain that fire not only when an individual performs an action, but when that individual witnesses another perform an action. This is why we yawn when we see others yawn, and flinch when we see someone stub a toe. Do you ever smile when you see someone smile? These reactions are governed by your mirror neurons, which allow you to not only simulate the actions of others, but the emotions behind those actions! Researchers have used fMRI technology to test the effect of emotional attachment on brain function, and the results are extraordinary. The next game you go to, act exactly how you want your players, your child, or their team to react. Get the other coaches and spectators to do the same. See what happens. I think you will see quite the correlation. https://changingthegameproject.com/why-we-rage-the-science/

04.01.2022 Changing the Game Project friend Coach James Leath encourages a distraught, young football player: Hello Coach Leath, my dad says I cant quit my team, but I do...nt want to play football anymore. All I do is sit on the bench during the games. What should I do? Your Friend, Chris, 11 Dear Chris, Congratulations on making the football team. Believe it or not, the first year I tried out for football I did not make the team. I remember how sad I was when the coach read off the names of the kids who would be playing that year. I tried out the next year and sat on the bench during most of the games, only playing a few plays. But I knew I would not play in the games. The other players were bigger and better than I was, so why would coach put me in? So, instead of complaining about playing time, I decided to make practice my games. Every Tuesday and Thursday I would prepare for practice as if I was going to be playing a game. I went all out on the scout team, knowing that the harder I was to block in practice, the better my team would do in the game. When they did well in the game, I took pride in knowing I helped them prepare. Practice was hard, Chris. I got knocked down, a lot. I was scared, but I tried not to let the other players know how scared I was. Some of the players hit really hard and the noise alone made me want to quit. After a few weeks I got better and was less afraid. I made some friends on the team and started to have fun. I still got knocked down, and I wasnt very good, but I realized what a privilege it was to be on the team. I promised myself I would finish the season and then decide if I wanted to play again. Also, I thought I was letting my dad down by not starting. When I told him I was embarrassed because I sat the bench, he told me he was proud that I made the team, and that he loved to watch me go all out in practice. That helped a lot knowing that my dad just loved to watch me practice. The next year, you know what? I was one of the best players on the team. I was voted team captain and rarely came out of the game. I am not saying this will happen for you, but I am telling you that in order to be good at something, you have to be okay with being bad at it first. Then you get better. Always aim to get better, no matter what you do in life. I want to encourage you to finish the season. You dont have to play next year, but you should follow through with your commitment and try to have as much fun while you are there. Please dont quit. Stay Curious, Coach Leath

02.01.2022 Young athletes are not adults and do not have the life experience to be held to the expectation of being able to control their emotions. Sports gives a student ...a controlled environment to learn how to manage feelings and emotions, and the coach is the teacher. That teaching is one of the biggest lessons a coach can teach an athlete under their supervision. It starts with you, Coach. Your athletes are always watching. Lead by example on the sideline, at your job, and in your relationships. Admit when you are wrong, and make amendseven if it means your chest will be sore for the next few days. https://jamesleath.com/notes/control-your-emotions
