25.01.2022 From Titans.com.au: After 144 games for the Titans, the Gold Coast farewells one of its favourite sons Ryan James [pic]. When James was a 19-year-old making his NRL debut in 2010 he was paired up with then 33-year-old Preston Campbell, he has since travelled extensively with Preston the man who inspired the All Stars concept on visits to remote Indigenous communities. Ryan has closely followed in his mentor’s footsteps, to unite and inspire the Indigenous Community by spear...headed the club’s programs including Titans Deadly Futures and becoming a key member of the Titans Reconciliation Action Plan working group. All while managing to juggle the demands of completing a Bachelor of Business, a young family, his professional Rugby League commitments, as well as being the clubs most active player in the wider community. Titans great Preston Campbell says you could tell from a young age that James was going to be highly regarded. It is always easy to tell whether somebody is going to do alright in the game of rugby league by the way they carry themselves and Ryan was one of those young people, Campbell said. He was always respectful and a very humble young boy. Being a local fella, he was really proud of the opportunity he got at the Gold Coast Titans. Former team-mate Greg Bird joined the well-wishers, Congratulations on everything you have achieved as a player and as a captain of the Gold Coast, Bird said. It was always a pleasure playing with you and I know you’re going to kick on and get back on the field and kill it again. Renee Cohen (Titans General Manager of Community) says it’s about more than on-field achievements when you talk about Ryan James. You’ve done so much for so many people and you’re an important part of getting the club to where it is right now, Cohen said. As both Paul Broughton and Ken Stephen medallist you have inspired so many young indigenous players and students to believe in themselves and what they can achieve. I just want to say a huge thank you from the bottom of my heart for all that you’ve done for the Club and the community. The Titans wish Ryan well as he continues his NRL career at the Canberra Raiders in 2021. https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images

24.01.2022 From NRL.com - Joel Gould writes: A stunning display by Ryan Papenhuyzen was overshadowed by a feared recurrence of a medial injury for Cameron Munster in the Storm's 36-24 qualifying final win over the Eels. [NRL post match media conference with Storm's coach Craig Bellamy. 24.01.2022 From rugbyleagueplanet.com - Brian Rowe writes: USA Hawks backrower Joe Eichner [pic, left] has re-signed with Intrust Super Cup team the Northern Pride for the 2021 season. Due to COVID-19, however, the 2020 season did not happen and Eichner has had to return to the United States. He must reapply for his visa from outside of Australia and that whole process could take some time. Eichner told Rugby League Planet, Yes, it’s been quite the hassle. The team manager moved on and... so there was no one there to sort it unfortunately. The coach reluctantly agreed to re-sign me on the basis I would be back at the beginning of the year, but it’s proving to be quite difficult. I’m reaching out to an immigration lawyer (in Cairns) currently seeing if I can expedite the process. The Pride played just one game in March before the Queensland Rugby League (QRL) made the decision to cancel the 2020 season in the interests of player safety in the wake of the global pandemic. Eichner has remained in Cairns, in Far North Queensland, since then to continue his employment obligations outside of football, but his visa was nearing its expiration date, so he had no choice but to return to the US. The Hawks forward this week flew back to his native Florida, I’m back in my hometown of Geneva, Florida, he said. Helping my parents out on the family farm and I think I’m going to pick up some laboring work with my brother while I’m here till things get sorted. Eichner has been playing rugby league in Australia since 2018. He started with the Junee Diesels in the New South Wales Group 9 Division before moving north to Queensland in 2019 and linking up with the Cairns Brothers RLFC, a feeder club to the Northern Pride, in the Cairns and District competition. It didn’t take long for him to be given a shot to try out with the Pride and he had been a regular starter on their team before this season was shelved. He is the first American-born player to earn a starting spot on an Intrust Super Cup team in a regular season. Eichner has also been a regular fixture in the American national team since the 2017 Rugby League World Cup (RLWC) after getting his first start with the Hawks a year earlier. He began his rugby football playing career in 2009 at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville where he played rugby union before signing on with the Jacksonville Axemen in the USA Rugby League (USARL) national clubs competition. Eichner was part of the Axemen team that clinched its second USARL national championship in 2012. https://i2.wp.com//wp-cont/uploads/2019/02/JoeEichner.jpg

23.01.2022 From thetelegraphandargus.co.uk - Nathan Atkinson writes: Bradford Bulls have announced this afternoon that they will be applying for the vacant spot in Super League for 2021. With Toronto Wolfpack voted out of the top flight earlier in the week, several clubs, including the likes of Bulls, Toulouse, Leigh and London, have been talked about as replacements. And Bulls have officially thrown their hat into the ring, with chief executive Mark Sawyer saying on Wednesday that the...y would probably know one way or another whether they were going to apply after a meeting yesterday. So after seven long years away, will we see the Bulls playing Super League again in 2021? https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images

22.01.2022 From foxsports.com.au - Mark St John writes: Parramatta legend Peter Sterling [pic] has called on Michael Jennings to show his Eels teammates how to defend after their right-hand side was again brutally exposed by the Storm. The Eels surrendered a 12-0 lead after 22 minutes to concede a 36-12 scoreline in the final hour of their clash with the Storm in a 12-point loss at Suncorp Stadium. Ironically it was one of Parramatta’s better attacking games this season, but they are st...ill leaking too manny points to be serious premiership contenders, particularly on the right. It’s been a concern for a long time, Sterling told Finals Footy. We’ve made reference throughout the course of the year that on that right-handed defensive side there’s a lack of trust, a lack of understanding of how to defend certain situations. Former Blues and Kangaroos star Jennings has been a revelation for the Eels on the left of the field scoring tries and stopping them at the other end. However the right side featuring Waqa Blake has struggled to consistently shut down opportunities from opposition sides. The Eels were unlucky to lose both their wingers in Maika Sivo and Blake Ferguson against the Storm, but Sterling called for Jennings to lead the way for his teammates at training this week, ahead of a do or die clash with the winners of the Rabbitohs match with the Knights. I never quite understood why with Michael Jennings on the left side, why he hasn’t been pulled over to have a chat with the guys over there as to ‘this is what you do in these circumstances, this is how you react’, Sterling said. It hasn’t just been this week, but you’ll get exposed more against the best sides in finals football. Certainly, for the second half of the year that right-side defence of Parramatta has been a problem area, a lack of trust there which is a concern going into finals football. Queensland great Paul Vautin agreed, It was a carve up down the right-hand side, Vautin said. What were they doing in defence?! he said. The Eels could face the Rabbitohs next week, who smashed them 38-0 in Round 16. Unless they can address their leaky defence then it could be a very long night at the office next week as they stare down the barrel of going out in straight sets. https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images

22.01.2022 From illawarramercury.com.au - Mitch Jennings writes: 'Merger', it seems, is still a dirty word. It's the case in all spheres, business, local councils, newspapers, spirt and, yes, rugby league. You only need to look at how divided the board and fans of St George Illawarra remain two decades after becoming a joint-venture. The term,[ used in a story by your columnist this week,]certainly grabbed the attention of some, including a few at the NSW Rugby League who respectfully ...Continue reading

17.01.2022 From NRL.com - Dan Walsh writes: Bulldogs forward Luke Thompson [pic] has been handed a four-match ban for making dangerous contact with the eye of Penrith's James Tamou. The Englishman is charged with allegedly making contact with the eyes of Tamou during Saturday's match at ANZ Stadium. Tamou made the complaint to referee Henry Perenera during the match but after the game downplayed the incident. Thompson was one of two players referred to the judiciary after Round 20. Stor...m forward Max King was suspended for three matches after pleading guilty to a dangerous contact charge for a "hip-drop" tackle. In other news involving the Storm, prop Tui Kamikamica will miss Saturday's qualifying final against Parramatta after pleading guilty to a dangerous contact charge. Queensland's backline stocks are in dire straits for Origin I with Valentine Holmes banned for a shoulder charge, making him the latest in a growing list of MIA Maroons for game one. The Cowboys announced on Monday that Holmes had elected to take an early guilty plea for his grade-one charge over an incident involving Brisbane's Jesse Arthurs. Eels forward Ryan Matterson is right to play against Melbourne after pleading guilty to a grade-one dangerous contact charge while Wests Tigers utility back Adam Doueihi also entered an early guilty plea and will miss one match for a shoulder charge offence. Manly prop Sean Keppie and Warriors lock Jazz Tevaga have both accepted fines after receiving contrary conduct charges. https://www.nrl.com//thompsonl-deject-200711_sd_03-edit.jp

15.01.2022 From zerotackle.com - Lochlan Balloch writes: NZ Warriors prop Agnatius Paasi is set to leave New Zealand and join Super League club St Helens next season, according to a report by Stuff.co.nz. The 28-year old was one of the Warriors’ best in 2019, being a regular start in an impressive partnership with Leeson Ah Mau. His 2020 however has been disappointing, only featuring in six games which were all off the bench, as well as dealing with an ankle injury. The father of four ...was also one of four players to return to New Zealand after their game against the Roosters on July 25. The Warriors have been actively recruiting forwards in recent weeks, signing Addin Fonua-Blake from Manly and previously recruiting Kane Evans and Ben Murdoch-Masila. Due to these recruits, Paasi and the Warriors have mutually agreed to part ways despite him having two years remaining on his contract. Paasi’s move to St Helens is pending on the 28-year old recieving a visa but due to him playing in over 50 per cent of Warriors game the past two years, it should not be an issue. 27 players are on the Warriors books for 2021, with 10 players not offered a deal for 2021 in a move that could free up the Warriors to use their cap room on any avaliable players from other clubs, particuarly with Paasi leaving and fellow prop Adam Blair retiring. https://static.zerotackle.com//GettyImages-1160468472-696x

10.01.2022 From NRL.com - Who's the greatest Origin coach of all? There have been many coaches who've taken on the daunting task of guiding their State into the State of Origin arena but who was the greatest of all? From the early days of Origin in the 1980s to now, there have been a lot of colourful characters at the helm of NSW and Queensland, but not all of them have been successful. Some premiership-winning coaches have lasted a short time in the Origin arena before returning to cl...Continue reading

09.01.2022 NRL.com - Troy Whittaker writes: Cody Walker set South Sydney up for an elimination final clash with Parramatta by leading his side to a 46-20 win over Newcastle at ANZ Stadium on Sunday. After Knights captain Mitchell Pearce attempted to put Walker off his game with some unsolicited advice early in proceedings, the star five-eighth let his actions serve as his response. It capped a torrid week for Souths after serious allegations emerged about former star player Sam Burgess..., which is being investigated by the NRL Integrity Unit and NSW Police. As well as turning in a resolute performance in defence, Walker scored a try and had a try assist in a strong individual performance. As was the case in the previous three finals matches over the weekend, the team that started all guns blazing was unable to maintain that momentum. Newcastle led 12-0 inside the opening 10 minutes via tries scored by Hymel Hunt and Bradman Best. But once Corey Allan opened Souths’ account in the 16th minute, South Sydney were the better of the two sides. Walker, Alex Johnston and Cameron Murray all scored as South Sydney turned a 14-0 deficit into a six-point lead heading into the second half. Newcastle remained a chance of staging a fightback of their own until the 61st minute when Tevita Tatola crashed over from close range. Johnston’s second of the day following a telling pass from Walker gave Souths even more breathing room with 11 minutes remaining. Retiring Knights forward Aidan Guerra ended his career on a high with a sideline conversion after a consolation try to Hymel Hunt. https://www.nrl.com//walkerc-scores-a-try-celebration-1gp_

06.01.2022 From NRL.com Dan Walsh writes: The Raiders have set up another showdown with the Roosters after coming from behind to beat Cronulla 32-20 before delirious hometown fans at GIO Stadium. Last year’s grand finalists now meet in this year’s qualifying finals after five-eighth Jack Wighton scored a double tonight to underscore his value to Ricky Stuart’s side. English halfback George Williams also proved his worth with a brace as the Raiders put on 22 points in the second half to... end Cronulla's season. The Sharks opened the scoring through a Chad Townsend penalty, but less than three minutes later and Joe Tapine wriggled free from four defenders in a powerful 10-metre run to score. The Sharks replied to level scores 6-6 after Ronaldo Mulitalo ran onto a Connor Tracey pass. And then the visitors edged further ahead (14-6) through Blayke Brailey under the posts off an Elliott Whitehead fumble. The No.9 had to leave the field shortly after with an ankle injury and didn’t return. Against the flow, Williams intercepted a Wade Graham pass to race 55 metres untouched and reduce the Sharks lead to 14-10, which remained the halftime score. The second half started with controversy after Wighton scored off a quick tap, while the Sharks players appeared to want to challenge a penalty call against them. But the rules stipulate ruck and marker infringements cannot be challenged. It gave the Raiders the lead back 16-14 and when Wighton scored his second three minutes later, the momentum was all with Canberra. Two more tries snuffed out any thoughts of a Sharks comeback although they did grab a consolation intercept try to Sione Katoa in the dying minutes. For a second straight year, the Sharks have bowed out in week one of the finals. Last season it was to Manly and now to Canberra. https://www.nrl.com//t/raiders-v-sharks/wightrc1_1945.jpg

06.01.2022 Legend Q&A: Adam Mogg [pic]. From NRL.com - Alicia Newton writes: Adam Mogg wasn't a player who you'd identify with natural flare or the ability to bust a game wide open through pure skill. But what Mogg lacked with speed or strength on the edge was made up by a willingness to work hard and never give up. 01.01.2022 From sportingnews.com - Nathan Williamson writes: Former Storm and Rabbitohs centre Greg Inglis [pic] has conceded that the thought of suicide crossed his mind for a split second as he prepares for his rugby league return. Inglis retired from the NRL last year while playing with South Sydney, moving into an ambassador and coaching role with the club. Since then, the 33-year-old has struggled with his mental health as he deals with life after retirement, with the Queensland a...nd Australian legend admitting that he hit 'rock bottom' after an incident during last year's Magic Round. As he prepares for a rugby league return with the Warrington Wolves, Inglis has revealed to Channel Nine that the split-second thought of suicide was the catalyst for him receiving the necessary help. I was never to that point of actually doing it but it crossed my mind for a split second, he said. That was enough for me to go out and need more help. If someone takes something out of my story, that's changing someone's life and hopefully that's one life saved." Along with this, Inglis has opened up on the damaging effects that racial abuse had on his career after Titans forward Tyrone Peachey was allegedly racially abused by Knights second-rower Mitch Barnett on the weekend. The 267-game veteran admits that it is still a 'massive problem' in Australian sport, struggling to understand why it continues to happen in 2020. It’s a massive issue in Australian sport, he said. We live in 2020, we’re not living in 1720. It’s pretty s*** to be honest. You just think of your family, where you come from and your history. To be racially abused, it’s disheartening. "I don't know if it's just a brain snap or just the way they've been raised. It's not something you pick up, it's something you're taught or been around." https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images
