12.01.2022 Archie the 6-month-old Labrador working through some exercises with plenty of distractions around. He is a good little worker and very eager to learn. Foundation work is really important in young dogs, the more time invested while as puppy sets your dog up for success in futer learning. Don’t give up, stay patient, keep consistent, maintain confidence and be assertive. Most of all have fun !!! If you are thinking of getting a furry friend and would like advice on where to start, please do not hesitate to give our team a call. We are more than happy to answer any questions you might have.

11.01.2022 When we are thinking of getting a new dog there are a few important factors to take into consideration. Often, people get a dog and within a few months they soon realise the dog is either too much work, does not fit into the family or the dog’s behaviour is out of control. This is one of many reasons dog’s get handed back into rescue shelters. The reality is they do not understand what that dog is bread to do and the time needed to meet the dog’s needs. For example: a wor...king breed dog (such as a Kelpie or German Shepherd) that does not get to work or does not get the adequate amount of mental stimulation and exercise every day, will very quickly become frustrated and start to find other ways to satisfy their needs. This is when we start having behavioural issues, this can become a costly and timely prosses to fix. Here are just a few points to consider when looking for you new furry friend. Do you know what the dog is bread to do, and how to best meet the dog’s needs? Do you have the time to properly mentally stimulate your dog’s instinctive drive? Do you have the space and time to properly exercise your dog? Do you have the time to teach your dog the skills needed to maintain a well-adjusted attitude? How long will the dog be left alone throughout the day? Will your dog get the adequate amount of socialization needed in the early days? Is your house dog proofed, can the dog escape or get itself into trouble? Owning a dog is a massive commitment and is not always fun and games, can you maintain that commitment? Do you travel a lot and will be leavening the dog on a regular occasion? When we have an understanding of something it lowers stress levels, allows us to stay calm and enjoy the tasks at hand. If we understand the breed of dog, we can create a much more enjoyable experience for both you and your new best friend.

02.01.2022 !! STORM SEASON !! Have you thought about your dogs? This time of year can be very stressful for some of our furry friends. Here are a few things to think about. When dogs feel scared, they like to find a safe place, due to their denning nature. Try providing a safe and comfortable place for your dog to go and rest while there is a storm. Make sure you stay calm and relaxed, when we get stressed and worried our dog will pick up on that and can make them worse. Consolin...g your dog and giving the dog to much affection when they’re scared can very easily reinforce that behaviour to increase. Distract them from the noise by giving your dog attention in the form of something that they like throw a ball, play tug, brush their hair and have fun with the dog. Try a thunder shirt. A thunder shirt sits nice and snug around the dog creating a constant pressure that can calm a dog down and help them rest. Reach out to a local dog trainer to guide you through the techniques used to desensitize the dog to thunderstorm. Please advocate for your dogs, try stay home if you know there is a big storm coming. Or sort other arrangements. Feel free to give our team at coastal K-9 a call if you have any question, we are more than happy to help.
