12.01.2022 Halloween! what nonsense ! An American traditionor is it? I like to dig up the pastnot literally! I searched back through the pages of history to find out what Halloween is really all about. The English word hallow is a verb, meaning to make holy or to honour as holy. All Hallow’s Eve (Hallowe’en) is the day before All Hallows Day, also called All Saints Day. This was a tradition started by the early Christians under the harsh persecution of the ancient Roman Empire fr...om the 1st to the 3rd Century AD. It eventually became 1st November, a day to honour all the matyred Saints. Halloween is really older than Christmas and Easter, and like these, it has become a mix of religious, cultural, seasonal and retail purposes. November 1st, was also the beginning of the Celtic winter, which was the festival of Samhain, (SAH-win) the Celtic lord of death his name meant summer’s end. The eve of Samhain, Oct. 31, was a time of Celtic pagan sacrifice, when they believed that Samhain allowed the souls of the dead to return to their earthly homes that evening. They believed ghosts, witches, goblins, and elves came to harm the people, particularly those who had inflicted harm on them during their lives. Hence all the ghosty stuff ! Trick or Treating for sweets is a tradition of North America but it may have its roots in a Medieval Christian practise called souling where poor children would go from house to house in festive times, singing and saying prayers for the dead. Children disguising themselves and going from door to door to receive food or coins on Halloween, is recorded in Scotland in 1895. At that time the masqueraders carried lanterns made out of scooped out turnips not pumpkins visited homes and were rewarded with cakes, fruit or money. See more

11.01.2022 I have not posted for a long time due to travel (where there is often lack of phone/internet signal) and commitments, so here is a photo from my WA trip in December - Rottnest Island Lighthouse. Once used as a prison for Aboriginal Men, it is an appalling part of our history - the men were chained and made to haul large stone blocks up hill to build the first lighthouse. This is the second one, which was built much taller, with the help of draught horses. Those isolated on the island today due to Coronavirus, could hardly call it a prison - it is a beautiful holiday destination.

03.01.2022 A Tribute to Bungaree Bungaree was the first Australian to circumnavigate the continent. A brave Kuringgai man from what is now known as the Broken Bay area of New South Wales, had joined Matthew Flinders's crew on the HMS Investigator, and was with them all the way. This voyage spanned from 1801 to early 1803. Bungaree was relied apon as an interpreter and guide. Although he could not speak the languages, he communicated well with local people along their long journey.
