25.01.2022 Access to seeds is one of the top reasons why people don't start or continue to garden. That's why our friends at Food From Home have stocked the Emerald Library with FREE SEEDS! Each seed envelope contains a pack of mystery seeds, a growing guide for those seeds and some info on how to join the Food From Home edible gardening community. The library also has a wonderful selection of gardening, sustainability and preserving books and magazines. Just be careful to not pick too many projects at the same time

24.01.2022 Tomatoes... to pinch the laterals or not? What do you do? Join the Cockatoo Sustainable Food Project to have your say and find out more. We had a great debate on the pros & cons of each at our first workshop back at the community house today! Our top tip from the workshop... Water the base of the tomato plant not the leaves. This helps reduce the risk of disease and maximises water efficiency.

20.01.2022 Jobs to do this weekend. 1. Check for Citrus Gall. Look for a swollen part of a branch. Treat by getting your secateurs or a potato peeler and carefully slicing open the swollen part. This should expose and kill the wasps. 2. Check your compost. If too dry add water or more greens, too wet add more browns, smelly add more browns. While your there don't forget to give it a good turn. ... 3. Check your watering system works. Simple problems like a faulty timer, blocked nozzle/ irrigation pipe can cause a giant headache later on and can be prevented by a thorough trial run now. To connect with other local gardeners join the Cockatoo Sustainable Food Project Let us know what jobs you are doing this weekend. Happy gardening!
19.01.2022 Jobs to do this weekend... 1. Check for rain and wind damage - (FYI if you're just getting back from holidays it rained A LOT) Check for general damage and make sure that your tomatoes are still staked properly. Use clean secateurs to remove any broken branches. 2. Pick off any split fruit - with all the rain and warm weather (humidity), tomatoes and stone fruit in particular are prone to splitting. Pick off any split fruit to prevent diseases. ... 3. Mulch - make sure that the rain hasn't washed away your mulch. With the warm weather coming this week your plants will thank you for making sure they are properly mulched. Mulching protects the roots from getting burned and helps keep them hydrated for longer. We like to use sugar cane mulch or pea straw. What are you getting up to in the garden this weekend? Looking for more gardening ideas jump across to Cockatoo Sustainable Food Project

14.01.2022 Jobs to do this weekend. 1. Weed vegetable beds. As the weather warms up, the weeds are going to grow rapidly which will mean your vegetables are competing for nutrients. If you can it's best to pull them out as you see them pop up, rather than have a big job later on. 2. Mulch. Mulching reduces the rate that weeds pop up while keeping water in the ground for longer, it's a win-win! We use sugar cane mulch or pea straw, as they eventually break down and add more nutri...ents to the soil. 3. Apply a liquid fertiliser. The recent heavy rains will have washed away a lot of the nutrients in the soil, so top them up with a liquid fertiliser such as worm wee, weed tea, seasol, charlie carp or whatever you have on hand. Happy gardening!

08.01.2022 JOBS TO DO THIS WEEKEND 1. Check your compost - give it a good turn, make sure it's not too dry, if it is give it a water, if you see lots of little vinegar flies, add some more browns eg. toilet paper roll, dry leaves, shredded paper or sawdust. 2. Weed your garden beds - if you can find a little bit of time to do this every week, you'll prevent it from becoming a massive problem. That old saying should really be... pulling a weed in time saves nine! If you have to prioriti...se, try to either get the ones out of your vege garden bed or those about to go to seed. 3. Check grafted fruit for unwanted grafts popping up around the plant base and stealing all the energy that should be going to your fruit. Passionfruit is a common plant that does this. And don't forget to jump across and join the Cockatoo Sustainable Food Project Happy gardening!
