23.01.2022 Q. How many programmers does it take to change a lightbulb? A. None. That's a hardware problem.

22.01.2022 Did you know that PHP, arguably the language of the web (Wordpress and many websites are coded in PHP) was originally developed as a Perl script? It's since been rewritten in C, but you can thank Perl for providing the language of the web.

22.01.2022 So Microsoft bought Skype for 8.5 billion dollars. That's quite a tidy sum. I'm wondering where Skype will go from here, and where this fits into Microsoft's business strategy, especially in the social and search areas where it is lacking. MS is a developer centric company so I can see them giving Skype an API, integrating it into their Azure platform, and allowing Skype to be used from within the .NET environment.

21.01.2022 For those of you interested in how computer applications work, this is exactly what happens when you run a bit of code called a Bubble Sort to put a random list of items in order. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lyZQPjUT5B4

21.01.2022 What a week. We delivered some software to a client, and scoped out and quoted a project for another client. A very satisfying week.

19.01.2022 Sad news today. Steve Jobs the co-founder of Apple has passed away at the age of 56. I would like to offer my condolences to Steve Jobs family. Jobs and Wozniaks creation, the Apple 2, was directly influential in my choice of software development as a career. After my high school purchased two Apple 2e's, that exposure resulted in writing my first programs, and I haven't stopped since. Thanks Steve. RIP.

18.01.2022 Currently working on a service for a client that imports orders into MYOB and exports invoices. It doesn't use the normal import/export method from within the application. Instead it uses the MYOB database driver.

16.01.2022 Australians are increasingly buying from overseas websites, but do they really care where the business is located? Unless they are looking for a specific product from a specific country, the answer is no. Aussies just want the product (and fast shipping.) So why not offer your products on the web?

15.01.2022 Interesting article about software design by the creators of the excellent Ruby on Rails framework.

15.01.2022 The definition of a computer programmer: A machine that turns caffeine into source code.

12.01.2022 Power failures and brownouts can happen without warning in this hot weather, and a failure can wreak havoc on your computer hardware. Your UPS can prevent this, but did you know that the batteries should be replaced every couple of years? Codeboss can help you with this, and more importantly, keep track of when your UPS needs its batteries replaced. Don't have a UPS? We can help you there too.

11.01.2022 There are a lot of Cloud service providers offering some great services, that can greatly benefit your business. The problem is that each of these services has an ongoing cost. Consider running your own Cloud. Find or create the services that you need and install them on one of the many fairly inexpensive cloud hosting services, such as Amazons EC2. Then you can have all the benefits of the Cloud at far less cost.

11.01.2022 I hope everyone enjoyed the extra long Easter/Anzac day weekend. Hopefully your websites were still hard at work attracting customers and growing your business.

11.01.2022 What a marvelous mid-winter day here in Adelaide. 20C in July isn't unheard of, but it doesn't happen often.

08.01.2022 This brings back memories. I started with the Vic 20, my first computer, not the C64 but it is still pretty cool to see this. Ahh Nostalgia.

08.01.2022 Even though the Microsoft Windows 8 Pro Upgrade allows a user to do a clean install, it has problems when attempting to activate later and insists that the install must have happened over a previous XP/Vista/Win7. This is very inconvenient if you want to reformat the drive first, or have had a disk failure and are installing on a new disk. Fortunately there is an easy solution from MS's own forums (possibly not approved by Microsoft.) Here it is:... 1. Run the registry editor (regedit) 2. Find the following key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup\OOBE 3. Change the value for 'MediaBootInstall' from 1 to 0 4. Open an elevated command prompt (run as admin) 5. Run the following command: slmgr -rearm 6. Reboot That's all there is to it. On restart you should find your install of Windows 8 activated.

08.01.2022 Thirty years ago today, the first IBM business PC hit the market with a massive 256K RAM and a clock speed of 4.77MHz. The good old IBM had a huge influence on the direction of the computer industry and provided a starting point for business to widely adopt computers in their day to day operations. We've come a long way since then, but there is still so much that can be done.

07.01.2022 Arthur C. Clarke said that any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic. So, does your website give your customers a magical experience?

06.01.2022 Did you know that accounting programs like MYOB and Quickbooks have the functionality to let a custom software import and export data? This means that you can link your eCommerce website, and other business applications, directly to your accounting package. Orders and new customers from your website can be automatically imported into MYOB. Imagine no more wasted time importing and exporting data manually.

03.01.2022 We're proud to announce the release of the kaBoks store (http://www.kaboks.com/), a project we've been working on for some time now. kaBoks is an online shop for digital scrapbooking kits. The site software has been developed using PHP and the Yii framework, uploads and stores its product files on Amazon S3, and integrates with PayPal for payment processing. This has been an interesting, and at times challenging project.

01.01.2022 After banging my head on the keyboard for a couple of days, trying to solve a MYOB ODBC problem importing data into MYOB, the solution was simpler than expected even if it was a little obscure.
