20.01.2022 THE DOG WHO HAD NO FRIENDS There was once a young dog who had a heart of gold. He was from a good family who loved him very much. They cared for him just like h...e was human... He was a friendly dog, one who wouldn't hurt a fly. He had 2 younger (human) brothers who would always play rough with him But he knew that they were only playing and so he would gently play back. He loved to play and make new friends He was always SO excited when he would go for his daily walks down to the dog park There were always so many new friends to be made! So he entered the park... Tail wagging, Senses going off with new scents and smells Always different from last time, New friendly faces that he couldn't wait to meet. But for some reason... Every time he entered the park... The other dogs would be put back on their leash... They would be taken home... They'd leave just as he would arrive.. He never had the chance to make new friends He would never be able to socialise These other owners took his new friends away before he ever had the chance to say hi Day in, day out, He constantly had the same troubles. He started to feel down Less excited about his walks knowing he wouldn't make any new friends... Was there something wrong with him? What did he ever do to the others? Why wouldn't they come close? His owners could see he was less energetic, Less enthused about his walks, His owners could see he seemed sad, So one night, they went online & bought him some new accessories... Thinking gifts may lighten him up. And that they did. A big, bright green collar, perfect for his next walk. So one day, back out on their daily walk to the dog park His mood was still a little down, Expecting the worst, Knowing the routine... Until suddenly... The dogs stayed, One, Two, Three.. None of the dogs left the park! THEN, dogs started to approach him! He was socialising! He had friends! He could FINALLY play with some dog friends. But what was different? What changed for this to happen? Was it by a stroke of good luck? No, It was his new collar. His bright green new collar his owners got him. It stood out so well that these other dog owners could read the big bold letters from afar that stated "FRIENDLY" The collar was able to let them know he wouldn't bite, That he was a friendly dog and wanted to make new friends From that day onwards his walks have become his favourite activities again, He's ecstatic for his walks... To meet new friends To socialise And it's all thanks to his new collar. ...Sometimes, all it takes is a bit of awareness to let other people know your dog is friendly & approachable. 20.01.2022 Where is my forever family? We just love our little man Bruiser and we are on a mission to find him his forever family! Bruiser has been with us for over a year... now waiting patiently in foster care for someone to adopt him. We aren't sure why Bruiser doesn't get much attention, he's been on PetRescue for so long, has had a few people apply, met some families, but they haven't appeared to like him much. He also decided to pee on the last person who went to meet him. Maybe this is part of the problem, but we just think that gives Bruiser character! The thing that we can't work it out is that he's such a cute little man, he's really sweet, he loves to curl up next to you on the couch at night and during the day he's happy to hang out at home while you're not there. All he needs to someone to love him. He deserves it at his age, Bruiser is 12yo. He's also super unique and missing an ear due to a battle at some stage in his life! Where is your perfect family, Bruiser? We know they're out there somewhere waiting for you. If you think you might be the family that Bruiser is looking for, please shoot us an email at [email protected] and we will send you an application :)

17.01.2022 Tick fact: For the cost of a large coffee once a week your dog could be on either nexgard (monthly) or bravecto (three monthly). Our Sawtell clinic currently has four tick cases. We anticipate more with this rain. Please start using tick prevention NOW!

16.01.2022 Tempted to share a hot cross bun with your best mate? Unfortunately hot cross buns can be toxic to dogs and it’s the inoffensive sultana that causes all the tro...uble. Even a small amount of grapes and raisins can be lethal to dogs as it can cause acute kidney failure. While they don’t know what the toxic substance in grapes is, veterinarians do agree that it is both the flesh and the skin that is poisonous to dogs. Because we don't know the exact mechanism that causes a dog to react to grapes/raisins, we also don't know why some dogs can tolerate them while others end up in kidney failure. We do however know that dogs can develop a toxicity to grapes/raisins over time, so just because they have eaten them before, doesn't mean they will continue to be unaffected. Young pup Ellie found out about the risks of raisin toxicity the hard way when she ingested an entire loaf of raisin bread. Her owners brought her to our ARH emergency hospital in Sinnamon Park after they noticed the loaf missing. Ellie seemed happy and healthy, however, if left untreated she may have developed symptoms of kidney failure such as vomiting, diarrhea, weakness, increased thirst and abdominal pain. We helped Ellie to bring up the contents of her stomach and monitored the function of her kidneys through blood tests. She was placed on a drip for 24 hours to help rebalance her body fluids and was given activated charcoal, which traps toxins and chemicals in the body allowing them to be flushed out and not reabsorbed. Ellie was one of the lucky ones whose experience left her with no ongoing medical issues. Take it from her though, as tasty as they look it’s best that your furry mate keeps clear of hot cross buns this Easter!

12.01.2022 Sharing because I see SO many people getting Doodle puppies. PLEASE EDUCATE YOURSELF! This breed is the result of amazing marketing, they are not by any means a...n "easy breed" to maintain. *****Not my Post, shared from another. If anyone knows who originated this post please let me know so I can give them credit. **** The perfect photo (shared from another groomer) to show how matting happens at the base (or at the skin). So many doodle owners are saddened to hear the only thing I can do with their pups coat is a shave because they thought brushing the top coat was enough. By looking at this dog, you may not see the knots and you may not feel them as you would a knot on the ends of the fur but once it starts its very difficult/ impossible to brush/COMB out... Not to mention it would be cruel to put the dog through. A quick once over will not work for these guys if you want them in a fuzzy coat. You really need to sit down with a metal comb and make sure you can get it through the entire body a couple times a week. Often times I feel like owners don't believe groomers when they say the dogs has to be clipped. I always hear "I know he/she is matted, but leave as much as you can"... this photo shows, the only way to get UNDER the matting is nothing left. I promise you, I'd rather not clip your baby naked either! I also don't want to hurt my reputation when the clients go around complaining about how the last groomer "scalped" their dog....But doodles are easily one of the highest maintenance dogs in reference to their coats. The combination of the soft coat of a golden, or aussie, or newf, or wheaten, or whatever they are mixing poodles with these days is a coat that is SO prone to matting. And even more so are the new "double doodles" that i like to call "double maintenance". I even find some doodles on a regular schedule still need to be clipped once or twice a year (maybe not shaved, but maybe teddy bear length for a fresh start) because after all of the brushing and de-matting, the damaged coat seems to become even MORE likely to matt. If you like a fluffy pup, you probably need to consider no more than 3-5 week intervals between grooming and set aside time for regular COMBING at home. Please know, if you bathe your doodle you really need to blow dry and brush out right after. Moisture, be it a bath, rain, swimming, snow etc are all going to amplify matting. And if you know your dog is already matted-- bathing is only going to make it worse! Brush out BEFORE the bath. AND!!!!! "breeders" who say they can't/shouldnt be clipped and OR not to give them a hair cut until they are 1 year are out of their minds and setting you up for a SAD SAD SAD day when you finally take your pup to the groomer.

11.01.2022 Dogs come into our lives to teach us about love, they depart to teach us about loss. A new dog never replaces an old dog, it merely expands the heart. If you have loved many dogs your heart is very big.

Virgin Australia Cargo and Jetpets will fly hundre...ds of pets in need of care across Australia, breaking down distance and travel barriers with the help of animal welfare charities such as PetRescue. The first flight took place this week, when Pet Rescue united Lallee with her new owners in Sydney where she can look forward to being a very much loved and permanent member of the family.
