25.01.2022 Those of you using a Nikon mirrorless camera can use it as a webcam, and this awesome video, shared by Diamonds Camera, Video & Digital steps you through how to set it up on a Mac using the tether cable instead of an HDMI. So good! https://www.youtube.com/watch

25.01.2022 Well we all know how far we go to get the shot - but...yikes!

25.01.2022 OK guys - just over 24 hours to enter our little lockdown competition. Prize is a FREE half-day studio hire (studio 1 / studio 2 or the product studio). Get into the spirit of things and let's see what you can do with any of these images. Email [email protected] for the link to download the hi-res files. Look like Trevor is oh so lonely at the studio all by himself and getting up to all sorts of mischief! Photo by Silvertrace :)

24.01.2022 Its well past time that we take the time to recognise the traditional lands upon which our creative space resides. In researching the best approach, we came across this information which is just wonderful. You will notice on our website a new an Acknowledgement of Country. How wonderful it is to live in a country with such ancient and special traditions - we truly value and respect and acknowledge those traditions, and the First Nations people who are the custodians of the...se traditions and this unique and beautiful culture. "Protocols for welcoming visitors to Country have been a part of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures for thousands of years. Despite the absence of fences or visible borders, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander groups had clear boundaries separating their Country from that of other groups. Seeking permission to enter or use resources from the land and sea have always been in place in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander societies. When permission was granted the hosting group would welcome the visitors, offering safe passage and protection of their spiritual being during the journey. While visitors were provided with a safe passage, they also had to respect the protocols and rules of the land owner group while on their Country. Today, much has changed, and these protocols have been adapted to contemporary circumstances. However, the essential elements of welcoming visitors and offering safe passage remain in place. This Welcome also gives custodians the opportunity to formally welcome people to their land. Similar to a Welcome to Country, an Acknowledgement of Country is generally offered at the beginning of a meeting, speech or formal occasion. It can be given by anyone (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and persons from with wider community). (https://reconciliationsa.org.au/welcome-and-acknowledgemen/)

24.01.2022 Samuel Graves shooting wigs in Studio 1. As you do.

23.01.2022 IMPORTANT NOTE - we are in the process of attempting to transfer our domain and it looks like our website is currently offline while we try to figure out web stuff. Aaaaargh! YOU CAN FIND US HERE IN THE MEANTIME: http://cogcreativespace.fotomerchant.com

22.01.2022 You don't need a fancy studio to shoot with amazing light. Is there somewhere at home that would make an ideal space to shoot that you might have overlooked? Essentially what we love about having a studio is that it's a climate-controlled environment where our subjects are always comfortable. Studio 1 is perfect year-round. But we also LOVE to shoot in studio 2 on a fine day with the roller door up and no lighting whatsoever. It's great for a good many months each year, and e...ven in winter we can shoot if it isn't raining (with a cosy studio and change / makeup room / other spaces to warm up). It's also a bonus not having to bring people in to your private space at home - but a shed would be an ideal compromise perhaps? So...show us your makeshift studios! https://mymodernmet.com/irene-rudnyk-diy-photo-studio/

22.01.2022 OK guys, time to get your portraits ready for this upcoming deadline... whos got what? https://independent-photo.com/submit/

22.01.2022 Samuel Graves in studio 2, using our fabulous cocoa background and some fun-looking party vibes...

20.01.2022 Our workshop for tomorrow is SOLD OUT! We're going to have great weather for Dave Laslett's Location Workshop in beautiful Macclesfield. Stay tuned for some documentation of what we get up to in the beautiful Adelaide Hills...can't wait!!

20.01.2022 Good ol Trevor was ever so relaxed about this test shoot in studio 1, playing with all the cool new colour gels at the studio. So many shades of so many colours! (music: bensound.com)

19.01.2022 Heres photographer Dave Laslett, our guest speaker for this coming Fridays artist talk, with his trusty Troop Carrier and crew. Wanna see this beast and the gear it carries around outback South Australia for Daves location shoots? So do we! Looking forward to catching up with Dave on Friday 24th Jan for his artist talk...whos coming along? (see our events for more info)...

19.01.2022 Righto - we are OPEN for studio bookings as of tomorrow, for small shoots (preferably one subject at a time please, avoiding subjects waiting around in the reception area). There are strict hygiene requirements - we have a hand-washing basin at the carpark entrance, as well as hand sanitiser and surface wipes to be used throughout the shoots. Subjects and models need to follow the same hygiene systems please. Bigger shoots may incur a cleaning fee. The makeup and change-room is available and needs to be wiped down by hirers after use. Our professional cleaning will be more regular from now on. Other than that it's back to shooting! Our studio hire price increase is on hold until 1st July, so get stuck into it! Oh, and we have spruced up the studios in the quiet time :) https://www.cogcreativespace.com/studio-hire-1

18.01.2022 Last chance to book in for Dave Lasletts location workshop THIS SUNDAY. Dave will have his truck set up in Macclesfield in the beautiful Adelaide Hills for a practical workshop outlining how he creates his images using location lighting for his unique landscape and portrait images. We have 2 spaces available - $235 + GST, includes bush coffee and refreshments. 2pm - 7pm (ish - if the light is good we may just keep shooting!) Check out our event for more details :) https://www.facebook.com/events/528138907812223/

18.01.2022 Our 'Built Environment' night was fantastic last night. Gregory Crewdson provided a great lead-in to local photographers Wayne Grivell and Peter Barnes showing their response to the built environment, and we had some interesting conversations about composition, space, working alone at night, and the style we each bring to our approach to the subject-matter. Thanks to everyone who came out on a school night! (please excuse the dodgy phone snaps - we should know better!) If anyone has any keen interest in us programming specific subject-matter or bringing in special guests please get in touch! See you at the next one!

17.01.2022 OK guys, time to get your portraits ready for this upcoming deadline... who's got what? https://independent-photo.com/submit/

17.01.2022 OK guys, is this too good to be true? https://rawsie.co/ Has anyone tested this yet? Keen to get feedback from photographers who are using this to save data storage. What a dream...

16.01.2022 Welcome to our hand washing station at the rear entrance (carpark entrance) to the studio**. All resident photographers and visitors are required to wash hands thoroughly before entering. We also have surface wipes available inside, and a regular professional cleaning regime in place. Having said that, most of us are staying at home given that photo shoots have been cancelled anyway. Please stay tuned for updates as we navigate this tricky territory - and fingers crossed that our rent can be suspended to help us get through this very difficult time. Take care everyone! ** special thanks to Peter at Kranium for making this hand-washing station for us, using to found objects! - - #virus #cleaningstation #handcleaningregime #keepourstudiosafe

10.01.2022 We have 2 questions we need answers to. Wed love your input guys...We have decided to change our hotdesk space into a dedicated product studio. It should be a good size for most products, and we want to equip it with a variety of surfaces that photographers would find helpful. What should we get? Please make your suggestions here, and if anyone knows where we can get access to interesting surfaces please let us know. Also, should we paint all the walls and ceiling black, or is it enough to have a ton of large black v-flats and poly boards and fabrics? Looking forward to your thoughts... Thank you :)

04.01.2022 It was incredible to have the talented and intriguing @davelaslett as our first guest speaker for our Artist Talk program in 2020. After the presentation he opened up his epic troop carrier and shared his equipment and lighting gear with us, offering added insight into how he approaches his photography, both logistically and creatively. Now we're all inspired to get some red dirt in our gear! It's a testament to his equipment that it is still functional at all, so that's a sh...out out to @elinchrom and @profoto - Dave could really do with some sponsorship with some new rugger gear! Thanks Dave for an amazing and inspiring presentation :) PS We have a location workshop with Dave coming up on Sunday 23rd February - limited spots available as we already have a solid list of interested photographers. Get in touch if you are keen to add your name to the list - details will be published soon.

03.01.2022 So happy to finally have these aluminium tubes for our classic backdrops. They should stay smooth and crisp rather than get funky because the cardboard cores sag over time. Studio 2 is getting all grown up with a combo of vinyl backdrops (aluminium cores) over the windows and these paper backdrops (classic tones) on solid cores (finally!) on the rolling backdrop stand. So good! The coloured backgrounds will need to put up for each use so that they don't sag over time - this will keep them fresh. We've tidied those up, cut the daggy ends, and taped the edges so they don't tear. It's backdrop revival month for Spring! #aluminiumcores #studiospringclean

03.01.2022 Who else just tuned in to watch the conversation between Sally Mann and Sarah Meister (MOMA)? Wow.

03.01.2022 This is an AMAZING webinar on colour theory and colour concepts for photographers by Joanna Kustra. Really worth watching. Hopefully it will help you analyse and plan colour better in your images - especially when it comes to choices in background selection (indoor or outdoor), clothing choices in your portraits, and colour grading. Immensely dense but worth watching for sure. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mC8ol2-V7Ck&feature=youtu.be

03.01.2022 Cog resident @samuelgravesphotographys images up on Spotify for their pop n fresh playlist! Shot in studio one on our savage cocoa backdrop.

01.01.2022 IMPORTANT NOTE :: After careful review of current health advice, we feel we have a duty of care to our resident photographers to minimise the spread of COVID-19 and help to keep the studio 100% safe and clean. Commencing Wednesday 25th March, we have come to the decision to suspend all outside bookings until further notice. Some of our photographers are still shooting in the studio and we have some excellent procedures in place, with a hand-washing station being installed out...side the studio, minimum 1.5m distance between subjects, regular use of sanitisers and wipes, and professional cleaning services on a regular basis. We are still working with individuals for pre-scheduled shoots and maintaining the recommended protocols for optimum safety. However we do anticipate that we will soon need to shut down the studios to the public entirely. If you have any urgent studio needs please get in touch by email [email protected] and we can see if one of our resident photographers can help. Take care, stay safe and keep in touch with us via our facebook page to see what we will be doing to keep positive and creative during these difficult times...
