25.01.2022 The increased humidity during the wet season sets off a chain reaction. Fungi and slime molds race to decompose dead matter on the forest floor. In some jungles, species of fungi outnumber plants 33 to 1.

24.01.2022 As we approach National Tree Day, let us consider what happens after each tree is planted... WHO IS THERE TO LOOK AFTER it, water it, keep weeds away, watch it ...grow, enjoy its flowers, fruits, shade & observe the fauna it attracts? bushtekniq encourages YOU to plant LOCALLY with quality, love, attentiveness & vision.. to continue to revisit & nurture these seedlings well after the main event.. kind-of like raising kids! FURTHERMORE.. try ASSISTED NATURAL REGEN.. there is plenty of local bushland (eg ya backyard!) that needs nurturing.. let plants regenerate in their own way, plant & nourish their own babies.. we humans can assist by cherishing, learning, keeping our natural places clear of rubbish, pollution & weeding in a chem-free way.. CARE FOR COUNTRY, every day.. See more

10.01.2022 This circa 1880 sugar cane homestead once resided along the Brisbane river and was relocated to Hawthorne in the 1940s. Unfortunately its landscaped garden was let go over the years, but after a couple days of getting stuck in it was brought back to its former glory. #coisfarraigevp #dirtyhands_happyfaces

08.01.2022 WHAT WILL YOU BE DOING ON WORLD MIGRATORY DAY -Saturday 11 May HELP SAVE THE FUTURE OF THE RAMSAR SITE AT TOONDAH HARBOUR. We need lots people out on the mudf...lats to deliver the message that the RAMSAR site is not for sale to a private developer. A film crew will be present. They are making a million dollar documentary on the global concern for the conservation of shorebirds. They have lots of scientists talking with them - what they do not have on film, is a passionate bunch of people involved in a serious action to save this RAMSAR site to protect shorebirds. We do hope you can encourage as many people as possible to join us! Please see the links below for your use in promoting the event and remember for people participating, wear wellies or old footwear! 04.01.2022 "The Ethos of Garden Grommets" Written by Luke Turnbull 2/5/2019... We want healthier, happier kids who get out there in the fresh air and dig and wheelbarrow and gather around the table and enjoy what theyve made. -Stephanie Alexander The love of gardening is a seed once sown that never dies. -Gertrude Jekyll Why try to explain miracles to kids when you can just have them plant a garden. -Robert Brault Kids are natural gardeners. They love to dig in the dirt, fill buckets with water, run in the sun, splash in puddles. Kids love to plant and pick fruit and vegies, to rake leaves and make mud pies. They love ants and bees, snails and birds and chooks. Kids are attuned to the wind and the sun and the rain. They are fascinated by manure and mulch, rising shoots, budding plants, something growing. But these days their relationship with nature is being eroded. Busy parents and access to screens, both big and small, mean our little ones are missing out. There is a generation of kids who think their food comes from the shelves of a shop, packaged in cans and plastic. And as kids lose their connection with nature, there are consequences obesity, anxiety, loss of focus. Ideally every kid should have access to a garden to give them a sanctuary for creative play, a quiet space where they can explore and learn. School or community gardens can fill the gap, re-establishing the connection between children and nature. And the benefits are many. More than just plants grow out of helping a child tend a garden. Setting up a garden requires co-operation, problem solving skills, communication. Digging the garden, planting the seed, watering the shoots, waiting for them to grow - gardening gives kids a sense of responsibility and accomplishment, teaches them patience and about cause and effect, helps them to learn about their environment. New skills learned cover everything from recognising seeds and plants to understanding about soils, weather, biology. A garden is an outdoor classroom where anything and everything can happen. It combines fresh air and exercise with all the usual inside subjects like English, maths, science and the result is all round learning that is engaging and fun. Kids can be involved in gardening from the very beginning designing garden plots, deciding what to plant, adding climbing frames and stepping stones, building a worm farm, splashes of colour, creating scarecrows and garden gnomes, harvesting. The benefits are well documented. Fresh air: A garden gives kids a place to run, jump and talk but also to find their calm. It offers a quiet space where kids can look, touch, climb, create and play. Exercise: Everything in a garden is about moving. From digging, raking and planting to carrying buckets, watering and building. It offers kids who spend a lot of time in front of screens or cooped up inside a chance to find their muscles and fill their lungs. Learning: Learning comes naturally in a garden. From recognising seeds and plants to watching weather patterns and understanding where their food comes from, kids absorb without effort. Gardening can improve fine motor skills in young kids, engage their senses and teach them basic principles of science, nutrition, the life of bugs and insects, the role of mulch and manure, building soils, making compost, recycling. Gardening also teaches abstract skills like responsibility and patience and gives kids their first taste of caring for something, nurturing and a sense of loss if the crop fails. Importantly, gardening teaches kids how their actions effect our environment. Building relationships: Kids work with other kids in the garden and the shared, fun experience breaks down barriers and allows relationships to build naturally. With common goals and the need to work co-operatively, kids learn about community and respect and maybe build friendships that would not blossom in the playground. Mental health: A garden is a place of light, calm and exercise, but also community and inclusion, all things that contribute to good mental health and stress relief. Time in the garden can help kids improve focus, mood and well-being and build self-confidence. Expanding on the garden: Time in the garden can be built on in many ways. Produce grown in the garden can give kids a variety of new tastes. Its more tempting to pick something youve grown and sample the goods. Harvesting can lead to preparing food for the table, cooking, sharing a meal. Kids are often more inclined to taste when friends are tasting too. Creating in the garden doesnt stop at growing produce and kids can let their imaginations run wild. Gardens need scarecrows, wind chimes, windmills, gnomes, fairies, artworks. And the open air is a great place for yarns and stories to emerge. Back in the classroom there can be time for scrap booking on how the garden is growing, a diary of what is happening, photos and drawings of plants. As the garden grows, so can its inhabitants. The addition of chooks, a worm farm, maybe a goat or a cow can add a new dimension and give older kids a real taste of responsibility. In our busy world, the garden is a simple, cost effective way to bring kids of all ages and backgrounds back to nature and to develop in them a love of the outdoors, nature and food. Incorporating gardens into schools and communities is a good way to ensure all kids have access to the benefits and growth offered by planting and nurturing. Plant the seed today and give kids their connection to health and happiness. Community gardens grow community. 03.01.2022 In the Battery Park neighbourhood of Manhattan, New York lies the Irish Hunger Memorial. The famine cottage comes from Co. Mayo and the stone, soil, and natural vegetation all come from the West of Ireland. Surrounding the cottage there are stones from every Irish county, with the name of the county inscribed on each stone. The memorial was completed in 2002.
