22.01.2022 So with the whole social isolation and slow down- home improvements and old shelved projects have now become possible The $150 - 1000l rainwater tank I have always been a fan of harvesting rain water - Bunnings do a great selection of poly tanks but not all of us love rain water harvesting to that degree $$ (yikes they are in the $1000 range)... My solution was to get an IBC (Intermediate bulk container ) They are tough , pretty durable , hold 1000 litres and best of all are cheap and plentiful ($50) - a good man on gumtree delivered for free too! Only drawback is they are ugly as sin. Using simple fittings from the big green shed I fitted a down pipe and overflow ($20) - clad it in cheap timber fencing ($50) and hooked up a transfer pump($25) Colcom fitted an inexpensive waterproof PowerPoint to power the pump (or any other appliance like my lawnmower etc) Surprisingly a good hour of rain and its full. I can now hook up my standard garden hose and water the garden, top up the pool or fill my second ibc tank hidden in the far corner of the property for later use. I know its not entirely electrical but simple solutions dont have to cost the earth and Colcom can certainly help you out with that electrical piece of the puzzle for your next home project.

17.01.2022 LED lighting - affordable, whilst offering huge energy savings. Add value to any room with simple clean looking downlights.

10.01.2022 Welcome to our energy saving and practical idea series. Whilst many of us are mindful of heavy usage appliances and the importance of switching off, there are several practical, affordable and simple ways of saving power, and therefore our hard earned cash. I will try to keep these posts brief and post more in-depth articles on our website for those wanting further detail. ... The first tip in our series is to save money by knowing your power usage patterns and adjusting behaviors to save instantly. Those of you who have solar installed will no doubt be receiving a credit on your power bill. The smaller this amount the better! In simple terms - try and USE all your solar generated power. Avoid exporting it cheaply, only to find you are importing expensive power. The trick is to know what power you are using at different times. By making a few easy changes you could save money. However, unless you know what you use and at what rate, you cant make an informed decision about being on a standard all time plan (A1) or a smart home plan (SM1) with varying rates. The following article explains the AMI smart meter and how it logs usage; http://www.colcomelectrical.com.au//why-read-your-smart-m/ For now - using your solar inverter, document what your solar system is generating on a daily basis. It doesnt apply If you dont have a solar system. Next, using your smart meter, document either weekly or monthly cumulative totals for each of the different rates allowing you to see your power usage patterns. These smart meters can be a bit tricky to read, so our next article will be a guide to smart meters, how to read them and make sense of the numbers. In the meantime, get in touch if you have any questions or observations youd like to share.
