24.01.2022 HAPPY MAN | Acclaimed sculptor Ayad Alqaragholli cast this elegant and exuberant bronze at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic as a happy man. The word he ch...ose to symbolise his experience of life in isolation lockdown is REFRAIN.Temporarily away interstate whilst working on his large-scale public art practice, he was forced to refrain from travel home due to the borders lockdown. With recurring themes of humanity, love and freedom underpinning his artworks he was left lamenting the impact that social distancing and the subsequent health regulations he and the wider community experienced. For him, the Happy Man artwork pays homage and gives thanks to everyone who is fighting to keep Australia safe and sends a global message representing the value of humanity in Australia; the women and men who have been at the forefront during this epidemic crisis. On display for next Wednesdays Refrain. 20.01.2022 Come along and celebrate Collie Art Gallerys reopening with an extraordinary exhibition from Art on the Move, Yagu Gurlbarl (Big Secret) by Julie Dowling. Yagu Garlburl (Big Secret) centers on the theme of slavery of First Nations Peoples in Australia, both in past centuries and in current Australian society. Julie Dowling is a First Nations Badimaya Yamaji from the Midwest of Western Australia. Dowling grew up in both semi-rural and urban areas in a large extended famil...y of impoverished Badimaya, Scottish & Irish Roman Catholics. Working in a realist style, Dowling draws on diverse traditions including European portraiture and Christian icons, mural painting, dotting and Indigenous Australian iconography. Like an ethnographer, Dowling recording the deep-seated injustices in the Indigenous community. Her works have a strong political edge; however, she speaks as a colonised subject and subverts the traditional power relations between the observer and the observed. Opening 6.00pm Friday 3 July the exhibition runs Thursday to Monday 10am-4pm until 16 August. Yagu Gurlbarl (Big Secret) is an @ART ON THE MOVE touring exhibition. ART ON THE MOVE is supported by the State Government through the @Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries. The @Act- Belong-Commit Engagement Program is sponsored by Healthway.

13.01.2022 Although COVID-19 made the Collie Art Prize 2020 shorter than we expected and the exhibition had to close early, it enjoyed three opening events, including the KID-entity that was the children’s section of this biennial exhibition. These events attracted a large crowd to the Gallery and the awarding ceremony was a success. Great appreciation goes to our sponsors who made the exhibition possible. Congratulations to all the finalists and those who were awarded and thanks to all who entered the CAP2020! We look forward to seeing you in CAP2022.

09.01.2022 Weve received artworks this week from artists entering more than one of our annual prizes; their versatility stretching from portraiture to landscape to sculpt...ure to genre painting. Some artists shift their styles radically depending on the format, and others maintain a consistent aesthetic no matter the medium or subject matter. These paintings are by Judy Cassab, who was born #onthisday in 1920. Though the first piece is an abstract, while the second and third are portraits, Cassabs distinctive hand shows through in the intense textures, striking colour palettes and segmented, angular compositions. Cassab won the #ArchibaldPrize twice the first woman to do so with these portraits of Stanislaus Rapotec in 1960, and Margo Lewers in 1967. The first work, Winter, comes from 1970, during a period when Cassab was consciously experimenting in abstract directions. Within the Gallerys collection are more explorations through style and form: still life paintings from the 1950s, lively travel sketches from 1989, and desert landscape drawings from the 1990s and beyond. If youd like inspiration to expand the scope of your creativity, browse more than 60 of these rich and expressive works by Judy Cassab in our collection online: https://bit.ly/2Ft30n5. Recently, Cassabs personal archive was also donated to the National Art Archive at the Gallery, and you can read more about her journeys in life and art with Together In Art: https://bit.ly/2Y5TRHz Artworks: Judy Cassab Winter 1970, gift of the artist 1971; Stanislaus Rapotec 1960, purchased 1961; Portrait of Margo Lewers 1967, purchased 1968. All from the collection of the Art Gallery of New South Wales and AGNSW. #otd

03.01.2022 Collie Art Gallery came into being thanks to the tireless lobbying and hard work by a group of passionate individuals. Jan Wallace was one those who lobbied for many years to create a home for the Shire of Collie’s significant art collection, even taking her baby son John in a basket to council meetings. Today John brought his mother into the gallery for a visit. This is paradise! Jan said as she looked around the gallery Everything is so beautifully displayed. The Gallery exists thanks to Jan’s passion and those others who contributed so much. We’re so pleased that Jan is pleased.
