22.01.2022 Good news - browsing is back soon. Next Tuesday, the Collingwood Toy Library will reopen. Saturday 7th will be the last day for Click and Collect pick-ups. Health and safety is a priority so we've spent a lot of time planning our reopening in line with the DHHS's specific advice to toy libraries. ... Here are some of our guidelines: 1) Please clean your returned toys. We have a toy cleaning station available. 2) Use hand sanitiser as you enter. 3) Wear a mask. 4) Maintain physical distancing of 1.5 metres. 5) Be careful to only touch the toys you want to take home. 6) Only limited numbers of members will be allowed to enter so you may need to wait in the foyer or outside until someone leaves. Thank you for your continued understanding, patience and support. We're excited to see you all again!

21.01.2022 Does something still exist if you cant see it? If youre a grown up, you know it definitely does. If youre a baby... well, youve gotta prove it for yourself.... This concept is known as "object permanence", and usually starts developing from around 4 to 7 months of age. Babies at this age may suddenly panic when you are out of sight, because they have realized that they are a separate entity to you, and if they cant see you - do you still exist? This is also when the fun game of "drop things off the high chair to see what happens" starts to appear, as well as posting (for more on posting, check out last weeks post on Containment Schema). You may know nothing about child development but you already know two object permanence games - Peek a Boo, and Hide and Seek! You can also do games like Hide the Toy - put one of your babys favourite toys in a small box or under a blanket. Ask your baby "Wheres your toy?" and point to the box/blanket, and allow them to explore and find the toy. You can make this harder as they get older by adding additional layers, or once they become mobile, hiding items in a room. Toys like shape sorters, posting boxes, or anything that involves putting one object inside another (think barns and animals, balls in a ball popper, etc) are fantastic for this age and can all be found at your local toy library.

21.01.2022 Back to our regular hours from today! Tuesday, Wednesday 9.30am - 12pm Thursday, Friday 9.30am - 5pm Saturday 9.30am - 2pm

13.01.2022 That are so many things that your child could do with this replica post-box. It might instantly inspire them to draw letters to people or even 'write' letters if they’re old enough. The quality wooden post-box comes with 6 letters and 6 stamps so it will keep your child engaged for ages. And they are guaranteed to ‘post’ their letters over and over Dramatic play with a post-box develops your child’s creativity, imagination and cognitive play. It also improves their fine mot...or skills and hand-eye coordination as they draw and ‘write.’ Older children may also develop an interest in mail collection and distribution. 09.01.2022 My child is starting school next year, they need to be ready! A lot of people join toy libraries when their child is 3-4 years old, asking for items to help w...ith "school readiness". So what does "school readiness" mean? Most of these parents think it means resources that focus on letter and number recognition think flash cards, toys with letters on them. Any day of the week, you'll hear and see ads targeting parents - implying that if your child doesn't know the entire alphabet and can count to 20, and write them all, by the time they walk through those school doors, somehow you have failed as a parent. First of all - can we stop that now, please? Youve been keeping at least one human being alive for several years now. You're doing amazing! Dont let some ad designed to encourage you to buy something make you feel bad. To be ready for school, they need to be ready to learn. The great news is, all children are born ready to learn. All they need is to be healthy, safe, and interested. From a more practical stand point, there are a few things you can focus on to help make the transition easier when the time comes (and none of them involve flashcards): Fine motor development: Holding a pencil takes some serious muscles! Develop these through playdough, threading, and activities like tearing paper. Talk to your local toy library about suggested toys for fine motor strength. Gross Motor Development: Does your child have the core strength to sit up on the mat, or in a chair, for a period of time? Borrow stepping stones, balancing beams, kinder boards, ride ons anything that requires whole body movement. Turn Taking and Patience: Going from an environment where its just them and a parent, maybe a bonus sibling or two, to a room full of other children and only 1-2 adults is pretty full on! Board games are fantastic for developing these skills (and resilience!). An added bonus is most board games also develop maths concepts (counting numbers whilst moving pieces, recognising numbers on a die, etc), so you get more bang for your borrowing buck. Independence: Can your child take their shoes off and on by themselves? Can they go to the toilet independently? Can they use the zips on their bag? This is mainly fine motor development, but also ties into confidence and resilience. One of the best tips I was ever given for starting school was to take your child with you to buy their lunch box and make sure they can open it themselves without any help, and for a couple of weeks before starting school use it for regular lunches or picnics, so its completely familiar by the time that first day rolls around. Language and Literacy: Talking, and books. Books, and talking. Reading aloud to your child is one of the greatest things you can do for their development, even if it is the same book over and over again (although a bit of variety is good for your sanity!). By reading, you are teaching your child the basics of written English how a book should be held, that we turn pages in a particular way, that we read words left to right. Ask questions through the book to help develop comprehension skills (Can you point to the blue sheep?, Why do you think the green sheep is sleeping?). Toy libraries will have additional resources to help develop letter recognition but remember to keep it fun kids learn best through play!

09.01.2022 ...play is understood to offer a means of exploring challenging ideas and feelings in a way that gives children a degree of distance and control

09.01.2022 Tummy time is so important for building muscles and discovering how gravity feels. It develops the foundation skills needed to get to the next milestones in the...ir development. Adding in some rattles and engaging toys and a mirror will spark a baby's interest and increase their desire to stay on their tummy longer. You'll find lots of great ideas at your local toy library - variety and novelty through toy rotation works really well. Getting down with them will make it delightful for them too!

09.01.2022 Did you buy too many puzzles during lockdown and need to do a clean out? Join the Toy Libraries Australia puzzle movement and play it forward! Collingwood Toy Library loves donations of good quality (complete) puzzles. Thank you in advance for your donations.
