23.01.2022 I was diagnosed with Bowel Cancer in 2008. I quickly adapted to my stoma and the constant companion of a bag. After all, there was no alternative. I was determined to continue my life as close to normal as possible. Initially, I had issues with athletic/ energetic activities. However, over time I have found ways to get a good fix - I now have very few, if any, problems. I use the SenSura Mio Concave, elastic tapes and seals to give me added protection and increase my ability... to perform in my sports. I also wear compression tops which help to hold the bag in place and provide added comfort and peace of mind. To give something back this year, I am attempting to complete the MACA Cancer 200 2020 Bike Challenge (200km in 2 days) to raise money for Cancer Research (The Perkins, Perth). Another strong motivation to complete this is for my partner, who has recently been diagnosed with Cancer. To follow my journey and to donate, you can view more here: https://www.cancer200.org.au/fundraisers/johnmead/cancer-200

20.01.2022 Worrying about the festive season doesn’t have to fester in your mind when you’re a colostomy user. I’ve figured out the perfect recipe to indulging in those Christmas cravings, whilst also keeping happy and healthy. Although Christmas pudding and fruit mince pies would land me on the naughty list (when it comes to my colostomy), those spare calories come in handy when I’m gorging on that Christmas pavlova. You’ll be pleased to know that booze is not off the menu. However, to... remain in tip-top shape, I need to take special care not to be tipsy. Drinking plenty of water and making sure I’ve eaten enough is good advice to everyone, not just colostomy users, in this arena. PS. in my experience overeating is never fun. Personally, I was always recommended to ‘trial and error’ small quantities of different foods, to see if it had any side effects this has always served me well. And, if in doubt, the Coloplast Care team were always on hand for guidance and support. 17.01.2022 After an ostomy operation, you need to find the ostomy products that fit you the best. However, it is not easy to find the perfect one, because what works for others doesn’t necessarily work for you. After periods of leaks daily, I found some products that could give me a normal everyday life without leaks. 5 years later I find out that it was not the best match for me. I found what I call "a sleeping bag". With this, I was able to get a proper night sleep for the first time... in 5 years. At the same time, it was safer and more comfortable to wear. 3 useful tips: 1. Be critical to your products so you find what works best for you. 2. Be open for new products from your ostomy nurse and your provider, so you can create more safety and quality in your life. 3. Get bags for different occasions as it can offer more quality in life with an intimate bag, sports bag or like me and sleeping bag with more space to your output. ----------- This post is made by Stomisten.dk in collaboration with Coloplast Try free Mio samples: http://coloplast.to/AU-MioRange

12.01.2022 Mental and physical health is important to maintaining a healthy lifestyle, especially during these uncertain times. This is not my first time being stuck at home for periods of time, so here are some of my top tips to help you maintain a healthy routine: Try working on some little projects around the house... It is a great time to get stuck into reading and listening podcasts try and learn something new Stay social by posting on forums and Facebook groups or have a few virtual drinks with friends, neighbours or work colleagues While I haven’t been able to go to the gym, I’ve found telehealth consults have been helpful to keep my fitness up at home Try keeping to a similar routine you had before isolation. Have your meals at the same time and try and do what you’d do in a typical day that means not spending all day in your pyjamas (as hard as that may be at times) And don’t neglect your health! If you find you're struggling with your continence or ostomy needs, Coloplast is still here to continue to support all of us. 10.01.2022 I was injured 27 years ago in summer. I’ll never forget my accident because it was the last day of Year 12. I met a group of mates at Southbank on a hot day, and we decided to go for a swim. Four of us ran into the pool, three came up, and I was the unlucky one that hit my head. Because of this, I am now paralysed from the chest down and have restricted movement in my arms, hands and no leg movement as a result. Despite the overwhelming situation, pain and uncertainty, I have... focussed on regaining my independence. With the support of my family, friends and support workers, I have gone on to live in my own home, travel the world and find fulfilling employment. I have even snow skied, snorkelled and surfed my way around the globe! I am also optimistic and supportive of local research into finding a cure for paralysis. The Perry Cross Spinal Research Foundation is working on some incredible Australian research and is focussed on getting to a human clinical trial. From the 2nd to the 8th of November, I am raising money for sipweek.com to support this ground-breaking research. sipweek.com challenges everyone to drink all their beverages through a straw, just like those with a spinal injury, to help raise funds to find the cure for paralysis. 08.01.2022 You cannot always predict how your services or personal situation will be affected during Covid-19. But I’ve found it is good to be adaptive and open to changing your schedule if required.
