25.01.2022 Crikey - in the first 24 hours we smashed our way to 26% of our funding target. Thank you soooo much to all our backers thus far who we're sure will be happily puzzling away come the silly season. To show our gratitude we will now reward you with a video of Pat experimenting with colours for the puzzle art. For anyone still to nab themselves a puzz - go to https://www.kickstarter.com//comicartworkshop/the-comic-ar Music by Dan San the Man
25.01.2022 Eleri Harris @elerimai ! Our very own director at The Comic Art Workshop posing here with flowers and holding @thenib’s Be Gay, Do Comics which she edited alongside @_mattlubchansky @sarahmirk and @mattbors - it won an IGNATZ award for Outstanding Anthology last week at @spxcomics which is just so awesome! Congrats to all the many artists involved in this book and all the editors and printers and distributors and readers!
24.01.2022 Who doesn't like jigsaw puzzles? Kickstarter launching on October 1-31. We are publishing this AMAZING 1000 piece jigsaw puzzle (limited edition with art by Pat Grant) to help fund our future workshops, but first we need your help to cover the cost of producing it.
24.01.2022 These 3 hot comic-babes @patgrantart @campbellwhyte and @chrisgooch44 all have books out really soon through Top Shelf. Here is them posing in 2017 at @krackstudio where we workshopped their projects at CAW. Can’t wait to have the final glorious printed colourful graphic novels in our greedy mitts. Congratulations to all three of you for the years of work you put in. Xo
23.01.2022 Campbell Whyte talks to the Book Show on radio national about his massive mega-work Home Time as well about Milktooth that he runs with Elizabeth Marruffo. https://www.abc.net.au//campbell-whyte-graphic-no/12703630

22.01.2022 Here are a couple of pro photos taken of my show by Stephen A'Court. It's on until 3pm this Sunday and then it's coming down... 38 Ghuznee Street! Thanks to those who have popped in already.
22.01.2022 For those who are considering applying to CAW (get in before March 12) -> please watch our Mini-CAW symposium from November 2020 because we give some idea of what its allllllllll about. The first session is probably the most specific to CAW 2021, but the other sessions, populated by our alumni, are REALLY WORTH IT for anyone making graphic novels.
22.01.2022 A really beautiful chat between Campbell Whyte, Chris Gooch and Pat Grant talking about their three books that are all coming out this year through Top Shelf in the States. All three of their books were workshopped at CAW, which also gets mentioned in this chat. https://youtu.be/wgnmijJYhn8
20.01.2022 Heads up! The ultimate merch! For all of October I’ll be running @thecomicartworkshop Kickstarter for this LIMITED EDITION 1000pc JIGSAW PUZZLE with art by th...e immaculate @patgrantart. When we unveil the entire puzzle you’ll totally get why we’re doing this - it’s insanely beautiful and weird, and it’ll be a great little brain-tickler. The art was originally made for @yoursandowls festival in NSW in 2017, and it’s getting a second life! Yay! The puzzles are being made right now by those friendly Jigsaw Hobbits over in NZ and we will be delivering them to all the backers before Xmas so they’ll make RAD pressies, and you’ll be supporting small artist-run arts organisations!! For anyone who doesn’t know about the Comic Art Workshop, it’s an Australian arts org that I am currently co-director of with the awesome Eleri Harris @elerimai. Arts funding looks preeeetty competitive in the near future so I dreamed up this other way of generating funds to keep the organisation going, and I’d love for this to work. But seriously -> Pat’s artwork is so bloody great that I can’t see how this wont work! (Is that real confidence Josh? ... uhhh ... nope ... crowdfunding is a truly terrifying thing to engage with until you hit the $ goal at which point you fold into your cocoon to recover from the stress and sometimes people emerge but they’re still caterpillars ... weird!!). If you have time in October to have a good look at it, grab one for your cousin, one for your boyfriend and one for mum, share it on whatever social mediums you like, and rave about it ->> goodness me, I’d be SOOO GRATEFUL Like - seriously, you have NO idea how grateful. 20.01.2022 This here is Chris Gooch @chrisgooch44 He is holding a book that represents a humungous undertaking: ‘Under Earth’ is about 600 pages of labour-intensive art, multiple rewrites, workshops at Comic Art Workshop, art grant apps and goodness knows what else. Chris’s focus on the long slog of the assembly-line has been second to none. Everyone admires his work ethic and stamina. This book can already be found out in the world but it’s official launch is in January 2021 so keep ...an eye out for both. We’ve been nagging Chris to send us a photo of him holding this incredible masterwork for about two months now because we wanted to celebrate his incredible achievement. It’s already getting great reviews and will undoubtedly adding to Chris’s expanding (and diverse) catalogue of outstanding comics (this is Chris’s third internationally published book). What an incredible achievement Chris. Can’t wait to get the final book in our hands. *Virtual cheering and virtual*
20.01.2022 Images from the little intro I made for Read To Me on Saturday. Total tech fail! Thanks to everyone who tried to watch it. ////// The show was called Beautiful Stories for Ugly Times and the ugly times defined the first hour. /////// I miss being able to run a proper live event.
19.01.2022 Tony Thorne! Lovely man of comics, animation.
17.01.2022 Thinking about last summer. To be continued.
17.01.2022 Apply to CAW, apps close March 12: details at http://comicartworkshop.com.au/ or click on the link in our instagram profile. CAW is back for its fourth biennial iteration and we're off to a new remote location. This time we're going to the spot where co-director Eleri Harris @elerimai was married! Yarrangobilly Caves in Kosciuszko National Park on Wolgalu country. Eleri really knew that the venue would be a magical place for us to work together undistracted and focused and su...rrounded by beauty because ... because well ... because it's a stunning place. Fires went through there in late 2019 and the regrowth is in full swing. Also, please know that in between workshop sessions each day we're just going to re-enact Eleri's wedding for her. It's guaranteed to be weird. Art by Leigh Rigozzi from our new-beaut website @leighrigozzi
16.01.2022 So exciting that Campbell Whyte's second volume of Home Time is available from tomorrow in Perth! Both books were workshopped at CAW and Campbell has been working on them for more than a decade so it's incredible that we're finally getting to see the second and final book in this epic adventure!
15.01.2022 2020 has been a year of many things, fires, pandemics, protests and video conference calls. Oh yeah! Because we at the Comic Art Workshop are hip with the kids, this month our cartoonists are joining the virtual fray with Mini-CAW: a single day online comics conference. We’ll be streaming the whole thing for free on Facebook Live and Youtube - with a bonus evening of comics readings the night prior from our friends at Read To Me.... SATURDAY NOVEMBER 28 7PM - Read To Me, Comic Art Workshop edition. Streaming live from the Knox Street Bar in Sydney, Read To Me is a live visual storytelling event that provides a platform for cartoonists and other kinds of artists and creatives to share their stories and investigate performative aspects of their work. Read To Me showcases emerging artists, as well as established ones whose work has been internationally published and recognised. Featuring Mirranda Burton, Max Loh, Eleri Harris, Leigh Rigozzi, Joshua Santospirito, Campbell Whyte, Sarah Firth and Fionn McCabe. SUNDAY NOVEMBER 29 9AM - COFFEE & CAW: Co-directors Josh and Eleri will kick off Sunday’s proceedings with caffeinated beverages and answers to any of the questions you might have about what the organisation does and where things are headed. PLUS! Exciting announcement about CAW 2021. 10AM - AMBITIOUS COMICS SUPPORT PANEL: Thi Bui, Max Loh, Owen Heitmann and Josh Santospirito are artists at different stages in making and finishing graphic novels, but they’re all too familiar with balancing life, paid work and bringing their sequential art dreams to fruition. They’re going to talk here about supporting yourself emotionally and financially through really big comics projects. 12PM - BIG PROJECT ONGOING: Sarah Firth, Gina Chadderton and Fionn McCabe are artists in the midst of making an ambitious comics project. They brought their drafts to CAW and are working hard on getting these projects to completion, but making comics takes a long time and a lot of effort. What tools do they use to keep themselves organised and motivated? How do they structure time working on this? 2PM - PHEW! BIG PROJECT COMPLETED: CAW co-founder Pat Grant, Campbell Whyte, Chris Gooch and Mirranda Burton are three alumni who brought drafts to our workshop which have become published graphic novels. What does that even feel like?! How did they get there? Find out how the magic happens. All videos will be recorded on YouTube and linked to on our website after the event! *Times listed are Australian Eastern Standard*

10.01.2022 Now Live This months Creator Chat is now live! We're very honoured to have a chat with not one but three amazing Australian creators
10.01.2022 While we wait for Campbell Whyte's follow-up to his marvelous 'Home Time', make the effort to check out Pat Grant's 'The Grot'. Mr Grant made a splash with the... sweet 'Blue' several years ago, but he's delivered his first epic - via US publisher IDW, Penguin Random House in Australia, who also published 'Home Time' - with the story of two dudes trying to make their fortune in a grotty and stinky environmental post-apocalyptic down-under. I've yet to see a copy in my own hands to give a full review, but I don't need one to know this is pretty groovy. It gets a thumbs up by Campbell himself, as well as Shaun Tan, and Craig 'Blankets' Thompson. See more
08.01.2022 Jump onto our Kickstarter campaign to read about the amazing puzzle we're making to help fund our workshop. The Jigsaw Hobbits over in New Zealand are carving the pieces by hand right now so they'll be ready and delivered before Christmas. You should totally grab one or three! You'll have a blast fun puzzling over all the rad details in Pat Grant's super fun art, happy in the knowledge that you've supported a grassroots artist organisation like the Comic Art Workshop xo
08.01.2022 Chris Gooch is on the ABC! His new BRICK of a graphic novel is coming out through Top Shelf!

06.01.2022 Excited to have this piece in the upcoming 2021 "Covid Chronicles" anthology with Graphic Mundi of Penn State University Press. It's about the rolling crises of... the 2019 - 2020 bushfires and pandemic. And struggling to make sense of and feel agency in the face of such huge devastation and uncertainty. Comic shared with permission here: https://sarahthefirth.medium.com/state-of-emergency-e947b8a Buy the full anthology here: https://graphicmundi.org/978-0-271-09014-6.html The comics in this collection have been generously donated by their creators. Proceeds from the sale of this volume are being donated by the publisher to the Book Industry Charitable Foundation in support of comics shops, bookstores, and their employees who have been adversely affected by the pandemic.

04.01.2022 Children in the Adelaide Hills had a great time learning how to draw comics at an Art Day event that took place in Lobethal yesterday. This event was part of ou...r recovery work supporting communities affected by the Cudlee Creek Fire. A huge thanks to Georgina Chadderton from George Rex Comics for showing us how to draw funny cartoons! Recovery can take many shapes and forms sometimes it’s about coming together to do something fun
03.01.2022 A silly comic for your Saturday. Got my brain all ready for six days of drawing and standing around on my new skateboard (in the apartment) pretending I’m skati...ng. Getting my brain back into work mode is not as easy, although I’m glad it’s looking like it’s not going to be as bad as they originally thought. Huge thanks to all essential and frontline healthcare workers for helping us all keep safe and healthy. #comics #art #illustration #australiancomics #australianart #australianillustration #ipadpro #procreate #covid_19 #autobio #adelaideartist #adelaidecomics #georgerexcomics
03.01.2022 Finally got my copy of the west Australian today. Everywhere in Broome was sold out!! I’m always tried to do things that made me happy and made the people arou...nd me happy. but it’s always been really scary and very hard. I’ve always been scared doing something new especially if that something leaves you without peers. But what I’ve learnt is: Do what you love regardless of what others think especially the ones closest to you, sometimes they are you hardest Critics but do what YOU love and be successful enough at it to help those around you. I can’t really make any promises but I’ll do my best to make sure ‘ole champ’ gives you all a good chuckle when you need one and lightens your day. And Finally got my new phone after the Aidan smashed the last one. If anyone was trying to get in touch with me over the last 2 weeks I’m now ‘touchable. (P.s. that’s the face I thought I was making during the photo shoot)
02.01.2022 This Sunday, come and hang out at our online symposium with 4 panels about MAKING THE LONG COMIC. It's FREE!
01.01.2022 If you’ve picked up the current issue of @citymagadl (and you should because it’s packed with lots of of excellent info and articles) you might see this comic a...d I made for @creditunionsa it is a very silly comic. [Image description: A six panel comic, drawn digitally, using the colour scheme orange and blue. Four friends are in line for fringe tickets and trying to figure out who’s paid for what. One friend, Jimmy, is trying to get out of paying by saying he doesn’t have his wallet.] #comic #illustration #art #australiancomics #australianillustration #australianart #adelaideartist #adelaidecomics #procreate #ipadpro #georgerexcomics
