18.01.2022 "Most of us (make sense of the world) by relying on personal experience and anecdotes, on stories rather than statistics..... We pay less attention to statistical evidence, painstakingly compiled through multiple studies..." "The news media give abundant attention to such mavericks, naysayers, professional controversialists, and table thumpers. The media would also have you believe that science is full of shocking discoveries made by lone geniuses." Sounds all to familiar in ...the fishing industry. Is this why many reasonable people doubt science? http://ngm.nationalgeographic.com//science-/achenbach-text

10.01.2022 Sustainability is no longer a cost to be borne when possible, but a business necessity, a driver of value and an investable proposition. http://impactalpha.com/sustainable-fish-luxury-or-necessity/

10.01.2022 "So if there are less sharks, there are more turtles for example which will eat more vegetation and disturb sediment on the sea floor, which will then release more carbon into the atmosphere" It almost sounds like a story line for a bad horror movie - CLIMATE KILLER TURTLES What do you think of the latest research making headlines? Drawing a long bow? ... From the Australian Marine Institute of Marine Science (AIMS) "Human pollution has contributed most to seagrass declines around the world. The greatest pollution threat to seagrass populations is from high levels of plant nutrients. High nutrient levels, often due to agricultural and urban run off, cause algae blooms that shade the seagrass. Reduction in light decreases seagrass growth and can kill whole populations. Suspended sediments also reduce light. This sediment can come from land development run off and through drains. Boating activity may also stir up sediment, reducing light levels." http://www.aims.gov.au/docs/projectnet/seagrasses.html http://www.abc.net.au/worldtoday/content/2015/s4321560.htm

05.01.2022 "A story is something we’re willing to pay for, or that our willingness to pay can be a vehicle for profound environmental and social change: Fair Trade coffee, cage-free eggs, grass-fed beef. These labels are shorthand for stories about making the world a better, fairer and more compassionate place. But we’re not good at telling the story of fish". http://www.futureoffish.org/blog/fish-and-value-story

02.01.2022 Well done Petuna Sealord Deepwater Fisheries, one of the Commonwealth Fisheries Association's members. Petuna Sealord Deepwater Fisheries has been granted Marine Stewardship Council certification for their operations in the winter blue grenadier fishery off Tasmania’s West Coast. Les Scott, Managing Director of the PSDF said he was pleased the fishery has verified its sustainability credentials.... Many fisheries talk about sustainability but we can prove that our blue grenadier operations meet the highest scientific standards available,’’ he said. ‘’We’ve been through an 18-month independent assessment process and had every aspect of our fishery examined. We’re not just saying we’re sustainable, we’ve got the blue tick to prove it.’’ Mr Scott said that given its history operating a factory vessel in the fishery the company was always confident it would receive the highest accolade from the Marine Stewardship Council
