23.01.2022 It is NOT cool to copy someone elses work. Its not okay to use someone elses images as pass them off as your own. Neither is it okay to copy someone elses work and then sell it as your own. I have been undecided to write about this for so long. It happens so often, people constantly showing me how products are similar, or ask the Who did it first answer. I mostly just keep going, avoid the distraction. I stay true to what I can design and make, and Im lucky I have amazi...ng clients that love and appreciate my work. And copying is not a new problem. It has been happening for centuries, and in every industry. The furniture industry is ripe with knockoffs. Fashion is another industry suffering. So I know its not personal. But this last instance that has come to my attention has crossed the line. The company has used my exact image that I took from my desk, taken from my studio, with my camera, the shadows are bad, and it shows all the scratches on my desk. The image above has been used by another company on their website and social media. Its clearly used so that they can sell it or sell something similar. Its not even the best image?! Its just a little lazy. And there are many images they have used across their website of my product. When someone knocks off a design, copies a product or even a business model, its only a reflection on that person that they are boring and uncreative. All it demonstrates is that they have no imagination or talent to even improve the design. Theres no passion to make it better or make it their own. Theres no understanding of all the failures in the product prototypes as to why it has been designed that way. Theres no understanding of the customer and what they want. Theres none of the process and journey, which informs the design and the way its made. Theres no connection with the maker either, because they are solely a manufacturer, rather than a designer. Theres no will to make it better. Make a better product. Make a better experience. Make a better business. Make something better for someone. Its time consuming to follow up and ask them to remove the images. Its costly to business. And its extremely

13.01.2022 A friend recently asked me how I got started and if she should open a shop on Etsy. And I thought I would share this tip with you too. So, yes, I did start on Etsy, with a profile and a shop name - Communicake it. I love Etsy and everything that it taught me. It helped me figure out SEO, how images are so powerful, and how to price a product. It also taught me the rigour that is required operationally - once you have made the sale, what it takes to make it happen and track o...rders! My recommendations now, in this day (not like I started back in 2012) is start with your own website. Buy your domain, start with (even a template) website and have an online presence - that you own. You never actually own your space on Etsy, on Instagram, or on Facebook pages. Always drive your sales back to your own website. AND, if anything, use your own domain to set up your email, rather than a gmail or hotmail account :) This gorgeous cake by @cupcakesbyannie

Yesterday I attended @theconfettiacademy conference (but very unconference) day, and it was loaded with a whole bunch of women-entrepreneurs starting and growing their businesses! What a way to play with ideas, & get loads of generous insights from Cherie The Digital Picnic and how to collab the right way with Jess from Collabosaurus. Astrid showed us the awesome tips on flat lays & Dessert Boxes gave us so many stories of business highs and fail...ures. In between I got to meet the super lovely and talented business owners doing their thing and chat business, and Im a bit of a conference junkie, as in Ive gone to 3 talks this week! And I love them. Sooo much learning, and sharing of stories. And getting IRL moments and conversations. The. Best!
