25.01.2022 a good example of why we encourage sniffing!

23.01.2022 IT DOESNT REALLY HURT, IT JUST. Whether it is a discussion about shock collars, citronella sprays, prong-collars, choke chain corrections, bonking a dog on... the head with a rolled up towel (I mean SERIOUSLY??), throwing a shake can at a dog or forcing them into a down, I am sure you have all heard this before: It doesnt really hurt, it just. (Insert: Startles, interrupts, stops the behaviour, corrects or whatever other sanitized term is used to convince others that what is being done is harmless.) I want to answer this as simply and briefly as possible: PUNISHMENT (ADDING SOMETHING TO STOP OR DECREASE A BEHAVIOUR) DOES NOT WORK UNLESS IT IS AVERSIVE. There is no way around this fact. Stimuli (stuff the dog experiences) are either: 1. PLEASANT 2. AVERSIVE 3. NEUTRAL Only a pleasant stimulus will increase behaviour. Only an aversive stimulus will decrease behaviour. A neutral stimulus has no effect on behaviour. You cannot divorce a stimulus from its emotional consequences. A pleasant stimulus makes a dog feel good so the dog will work for more of it. An aversive stimulus makes a dog feel bad, so the dog will work to avoid it. Dogs do not work to gain or avoid neutral stimuli. If a shock collar or vibrating collar or whatever, was not aversive, it would have NO effect on behaviour. YOU CANNOT USE PUNISHMENT AND AVERSIVE TOOLS WITHOUT EMOTIONAL FALLOUT. IT IS IMPOSSIBLE.

18.01.2022 Hey everyone! We are still here at Como Puppy Preschool, even though weve been quiet over the past few months. As you know, Covid has effected how we operate and will continue to do so for another few months yet, but we wanted to you to know that we can still offer Covid-safe alternative training and socialisation solutions for you and your puppy. Just shoot us a DM for further information. Cheers from Bec and Karen

06.01.2022 This is why we ask you not to push/force your puppy into anything. Giving them choice is what helps them overcome their fear.

03.01.2022 Its a bit that way lately

03.01.2022 Failing to understand body language of dogs can be downright dangerous. I often see photos in social media of dogs who look uncomfortable while the person in th...e photo attempts to cuddle the dog. Of course, many dogs are tolerant of behavior they find uncomfortable or scary - but all dogs have their limits. I worry that people (especially children) will get bitten - and that the dog will suffer serious repercussions for simply doing what they felt they had to do after their less-invasive body language was ignored by the people around them. Im especially worried when I hear a well-meaning parent say, my dog would NEVER bite my kid. A woman picked up a stray dog and ignored the clear body language of the dog as a friend snapped pictures of her and the dog outside by the pool. The results were caught in photos. Because they are a bit gruesome (showing the stitches that were required post-bite), Im putting the link to the photos in the first comment so you can skip them if you like. But if you choose to take a look, be honest while looking at the first two photos: what do you see there? Do you see a happy/comfortable dog? Or one thats uncomfortable? If you see comfortable, you (or your kids) are at risk of being bitten and I encourage you to check out www.ispeakdog.org or to speak with a qualified dog trainer about reading dog body language.

03.01.2022 I couldnt agree more!!

03.01.2022 This is good advice!

02.01.2022 ***CONGRATULATIONS*** To this wonderful bunch of people and pups! What a great class! a special congratulations to Essie and Monty who tied for our bonus bones challenge! One final challenge saw Essie as our winner but couldnt leave Monty out after all his efforts.

01.01.2022 This is what force-free, co-operative training can achieve. This little video shows the before and after. Its quite a transformation. Not only has the trainer worked on the little dogs behaviour but he has also changed the dogs emotional response to grooming, which is a win-win for both the dog and the trainer. We highly recommend you check out the full story to see how it was done.
