23.01.2022 Thank you Anglicare NSW South, NSW West & ACT for having me today to announce $2.5 million of funding to local community organisations to support the healthcare... needs of vulnerable Canberrans. This funding will be provided to Anglicare Junction Youth Services, Companion House and Directions Health Services to help address significant barriers people experience in accessing and navigating mainstream services, including health and social services. By working with these organisations, we’re able to leverage the strong relationships and trust they have built with vulnerable members of the community. We will be able to help more Canberrans access health services, helping to combat chronic disease and improve people's overall health and wellbeing. 22.01.2022 Companion House is still open and still supporting our community members but we have reduced our opening hours during the current Coronavirus pandemic. We are open 10am - 5pm Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. We are currently closed on Wednesdays. We are also asking if anyone has any cold, cough or flu like symptoms to please ring first and wait outside our office and we will come outside to meet you. We are also continuing to support people with no income or who are in extreme financial distress with basic food items. Some of these are becoming harder for us to access. If anyone has any spare packets of rice, pasta, tins of tuna, or cooking oil we would be very appreciative. If anyone is able to drop anything off to us remember we are closing the office on Wednesdays. Please take care everyone

We especially need rice, cooking oil, tinned tomatoes and tuna. Thank you for whatever you can spare. Our current hours for drop of...f are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday 10am - 5pm. We are currently closed on Wednesdays. Thank you again for everyone’s support. See more

07.01.2022 Today December 10 is Human Rights Day. On this day in 1948 the UN adopted the universal declaration of human rights which we all know well from our waiting room wall, where it is framed. Companion House was established by activists inspired by this declaration.... The quote below is from Eleanor Roosevelt and reminds us that Companion House aims to be one of those small places, close to home that she refers to: "Where, after all, do universal human rights begin? In small places, close to home -- so close and so small that they cannot be seen on any maps of the world. [...] Unless these rights have meaning there, they have little meaning anywhere. Without concerted citizen action to uphold them close to home, we shall look in vain for progress in the larger world." Thanks you for supporting our small place, close to home which works to uphold these principles. https://www.un.org/en/observances/human-rights-day

02.01.2022 Congratulations to everyone involved in the Celebration of African Australians ACT Awards Night 2020, especially Charles Coker and his team. The evening was a wonderful opportunity to highlight the talent and skill right here in our local community. The South Sudanese soccer team pictured were the champions of the football tournament this year. The tournament, in its 4th year, is an African Australian led community based initiative taking a strong stand against all forms of domestic violence, and has strong support across many local ACT communities.
